When encountered in her Gym, Janine hides behind the invisible walls that were installed prior to Generation I/III. Like the other Gym Leaders of Kanto and Johto, Janine will leave her Gym from time to time in HeartGold and SoulSilver. Every evening between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM, she can be found at the Pokémon League Reception Gate near Victory Road, on her way to visit her father and deliver his lunch (from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, she will say she is done delivering the lunch and offer to take a photograph with the player). She will give travelers her phone number, after which she can be called on Monday afternoons to arrange a rematch at Saffron City's Fighting Dojo. On Mondays, she can be found in the Celadon Department Store arguing with Falkner over which of their fathers is the superior Trainer. | Like the other Gym Leaders of Kanto and Johto, Janine will leave her Gym from time to time in HeartGold and SoulSilver. Janine (Japanese: アンズ Anzu) is the Gym Leader of Fuchsia City's Gym, known officially as the Fuchsia Gym. She became a Gym Leader after her father, Koga, was promoted to the Elite Four in Generation II. She specializes in Poison-type Pokémon. She gives the Soul Badge to Trainers who defeat her.
In the games
Janine's first appearance was in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal. Following Koga's promotion to the Elite Four, she succeeded him as the Gym Leader of the Fuchsia Gym. Like her father, she is known as "The Poisonous Ninja Master", and uses Poison-type Pokémon in battle. She appears in the same capacity in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
Originally, Janine's goal was to use Poison-type Pokémon just as well as her father. After becoming a Gym Leader, Janine hopes that by applying herself, she'll improve her skills and become better than both her father and (following her loss) the protagonist.
When encountered in her Gym, Janine hides behind the invisible walls that were installed prior to Generation I/III. To further confuse her challengers, the junior Trainers of the Gym are disguised like Janine. Once they have been defeated, the Leader will battle with a team of Poison-type Pokémon. Once defeated, she will yield the Soul Badge and a Poison-type TM: TM06 (Toxic) in Generation II; TM84 (Poison Jab) in Generation IV.
Before the events that led to her employment as the Gym Leader, Janine hung around outside the Fuchsia Zoo. She will tell the protagonist of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen that Koga is teaching her how to use Poison Pokémon in an obvious reference to the previously released Generation II games.
Janine also appears in Pokémon Stadium 2's Kanto Gym Leader Castle. This is the only time in which her active team contains Pokémon not of the Poison-type. Despite this, all her Pokémon in Round 1 know Toxic, a Poison-type move and the TM she gives in the Generation II games.

In the manga
In the Pokémon Adventures manga
Janine is the daughter of Koga, and the new Gym Leader in Fuchsia City. She does, however, leave town on many occasions to perform various jobs/simulations for anyone with the money to hire her. She was shown in Crossing Crobat to be in the middle of such a job, pretending to steal a large pearl to test the security at the Goldenrod Museum. After completing it, she pauses on a rooftop to wonder what she is doing with her life.
Her father, being both a ninja and a member of Team Rocket, had hoped to make her a member as well, both serving their master, Giovanni. But with Koga and Giovanni's disappearance, she was left alone and unguided. Searching for not just her father, but a master, Janine found herself in the same situation as Suicune, whom also was searching for a Trainer in its upcoming battle.
Suddenly, Suicune appeared before Janine, and challenged her with her Crobat. Suicune seemed initially caught off-guard by her tactics, but soon won. Before he left, Janine expressed her desires for finding her own master, just as she felt Suicune was.
Janine later fought against Falkner at the Gym Leaders Challenge. Despite overwhelming attacks, she forfeited the match when she left the battlefield, pursuing who she thought was her father. She never did catch the mysterious person, however, and it is unknown if they will ever meet again.

Trivia
- In the English versions of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, her name is mistakenly listed as Charine in Koga's Fame Checker entries.
- In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver, Janine's Pokémon are the lowest leveled of all the Kanto Gym Leaders. This may reflect her status as the newest Gym Leader.
- In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Janine can appear in two places at once. When she is called for a rematch on Monday during the day, she will be at the Fighting Dojo and in the Celadon Department Store, talking to Falkner.
- Chuang Yi mistakenly refers to her by her Japanese name, Anzu, rather than her English name, in Volume 11 of Pokémon Adventures. This was corrected in following volumes.
- In the Generation II games, her whole Pokémon team was the opposite gender to her despite the 50-50 gender ratio. This was changed in HeartGold and SoulSilver, in which she has an all female team rather than an all male team like before.
- In the English versions of the Generation II games, there is a grammatical error in the sentence where she gives the Soul Badge to the player. This was corrected in the remakes.
- Both Janine and Roxie have known fathers in the series. Unlike Roxie's father, Janine's father was also a Poison-type Gym Leader.
- Janine is the only Gym Leader that has not appeared in the anime, not counting Blue, who has an anime counterpart in Gary.
- Janine has an illegal Crobat in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2. The Crobat she uses in the Type Expert and World Leaders Tournaments knows Hypnosis and Brave Bird, both of which it can learn by breeding, but not simultaneously, as there is no Pokémon in the same Egg Group as Crobat that can learn both of these moves.
