James's Gyarados (Japanese: コジロウのギャラドス Kojirō's Gyarados) is the second Pokémon that was shown to be owned by James. He recieved it from the Magikarp Salesman in Battle Aboard the St. Anne.
History
James purchased his Gyarados as a Magikarp on the St. Anne. While on the ocean liner, the Magikarp salesman tricked him into buying what he said was a valuable Magikarp inside a gold Poké Ball. Jessie told James that Magikarp is a completely useless Pokémon, and Meowth informed James that the Poké Ball was only gold-plated.
When the St. Anne started to sink, James tried using Magikarp to help them escape, but it only made their situation worse. After finally making it to the surface, Meowth tried to take a bite out of it. His teeth broke off from the hard skin, and James, angry at how useless it was, kicked it into the ocean. The kick caused Magikarp to evolve into Gyarados.
Gyarados then chased all of them in rage. It seemed they had escaped, but then Gyarados started using Dragon Rage, James's Gyarados and several other Gyarados sent Team Rocket, Ash and his friends flying. James's Gyarados was never seen again. It reappeared in a flashback in the following episode.
Personality and characteristics
As a Magikarp, Gyarados showed typical traits of its species. It often disappointed its Trainer with how useless it was and seemed oblivious to anything going on around it. After evolving Gyarados showed a lot of rage, angry at its Trainer for deeming it worthless. After evolving it was also shown to be a very powerful swimmer, keeping up with all of Misty's Pokémon.
