Characteristics
Defensively, the Ice-type is considered a poor type, only bearing a resistance to one-even though useful-type (itself) and being weak to four types, although the Steel weakness is rarely harming, as Steel is not a common offesive type. This disadvantage is maked up somewhat, as the majority of Ice-types are dual-typed, what gives them resistances and/or immunities.
Offensively, the Ice-type is considered the best attacking type of all, together with Ground. It is the only type truely effective against the Template:Type2, as the only weakness of Dragons besides Ice is Dragon itself, which does not weaken any other type, giving little reason to use them over Ice attacks without STAB apart of defeating Kingdra and Palkia, meaning, the only other counters to Dragons are other Dragons. It also coveres the very common Flying- and Template:Type2s, and also Ground, which is, as said, the other best attacking type. X4 Weaknesses to Ice are very common (expecially among Dragons), while the only Pokémon that have a X1/4 resistiance to Ice and are not Ice-types themselfs are Empoleon and Heatran, although neither would enjoy Mamoswine's Earthquake. There is no type immune to Ice, which gives it an advantage over the other best attacking type, Ground, which does not effect Flying-types, a very common type to see, and Pokémon with the Levitate trait.
Quite expectedly, Ice and Ground, the two best attacking types, cover one another very well, what makes Mamoswine's type combination very useful for offensive sets. Ice and Electric are also knowen to creat a good combination, also knowen as "BoltBeam" (Thunderbolt and Ice Beam), that only Magnezone, Lanturn (with Volt Absorb) and Shedinja resists. That makes Ice very useful on sweepers, both physical and special.

Trivia
- Pure Ice-type species were not introduced until Generation III.
- Thirteen of the fifteen Ice-type moves are Beauty moves in Contests. The only two that aren't are new in Generation IV, meaning that in Hoenn Contests, all Ice-type moves were Beauty moves.
- As Ice is a strong offensive type and a poor defensive type, defensive Ice-types (Regice, Articuno and to an extent Cloyster, Dewgong and Lapras) are somewhat of an oxymoron. This is expecially true of the sole-typed Regice.
- Ice has the lowest number of resistences (counting immunities), being resistent to only itself.
- All types weak to Ice up to now are combined with the Ice-type, except for Dragon.
