In the games
In the core series games
Hugh is the player's childhood friend. He is described as feeling passionately for Pokémon battles and Pokémon strength. He is also a doting older brother to his sister; he hates Team Plasma because they stole a Purrloin his late grandfather had caught for his sister. For that reason, Hugh travels across Unova and challenges its Gyms so he and his Pokémon can become strong enough to topple the new Team Plasma. He considers both his Pokémon and the player to be his partners, and battles with and against them at several points during their journey.
Hugh is the player's childhood friend. He is described as feeling passionately for Pokémon battles and Pokémon strength. He is also a doting older brother to his sister; he hates Team Plasma because they stole a Purrloin his late grandfather had caught for her. For that reason, Hugh travels across Unova and challenges its Gyms so he and his Pokémon can become strong enough to topple the new Team Plasma. He considers both his Pokémon and the player to be his partners, and battles with and against them at several points during their journey.

Hugh is extremely quick to anger, and has difficulty forgiving the deserters of Team Plasma in Driftveil City. However, as he continues battling against the villainous team, Hugh realizes he isn't the only one has been affected by Team Plasma's deeds, and accepts the help of Rood and the other deserters.
Being extremely quick to anger when it comes to dealing with the villainous team, Hugh initially refuses to forgive the old Team Plasma members living in Driftveil City, treating them with as much hostility as the new members and asking Clay why he forgives them. However, as he continues battling the new Team Plasma and interacting with members of the old Team Plasma, Hugh comes to understand the division between the two sects, ultimately accepting the help of Rood and the old Team Plasma Grunts in the Giant Chasm. After the player helps recover Purrloin (now a Liepard) and enters the Hall of Fame, Hugh battles them once more before he begins helping the old Team Plasma reunite Trainers with their stolen Pokémon. He remains in Driftveil City from then on and can be battled daily.

Hugh first appeared in the Black 2 & White 2. He is a student at the Aspertia City Trainers' School, along with Blake, Whitley, Leo, Yuki, Yuko, and Maya. Despite having a home in Aspertia, Hugh lives in the school dormitories, where he shares a room with Leo. Hugh is obsessed with getting stronger, which tends to put him at odds with his classmates, who tend to focus on things other than battling.

*If talked to again
Hugh debuted in The Transfer Student, where he berated Blake and Leo for being late to class and angrily told Blake to focus more on improving himself as a Trainer instead of flirting with girls. Their argument alerted the new teacher, Cheren, who forced the three to sit outside as punishment. While they waited, Blake, Hugh, and Leo spotted the new transfer student, Whitley, arriving at class. Hearing the conversation Blake and others were having about Whitley, Cheren decided to skip the lecture and instead had the students battle each other. Separated into two groups by gender, Hugh battled against Leo and Blake, defeating the former, but losing to the latter.
:"That was good enough for your first battle! Cool. I'm heading off first! Get stronger!"

*After the player gets the Basic
In Movie Panic, Cheren took his class to a school trip at Pokéstar Studios. Hugh found the trip annoying, as he couldn't see how movies could make him stronger. He was proven wrong after learning the battles in the movies were real despite the dialogue being scripted. After returning to school, Yuki, Maya, and Yuko consulted with the other girls on their plans for the upcoming cultural festival. When Hugh told the girls to go back to their dorms like Cheren said to, Yuki told him off, one of her comments angering him into attacking. The girls angrily went home, but Hugh ending up picking up a pendant containing a memory card.
:"Are you the Gym Leader? One, two, three--let's battle!"
:"What was that weak answer?! I'm definitely going to take you down!"

*After defeating the Pokémon League
In Unforgettable Memories, Hugh checked the memory card and found that it contained a list of Pokémon and their Trainers. After finding his name, Hugh flashed back to five years ago, where he received a Purrloin and two other Pokémon from his grandfather. Hugh gave Purrloin to his younger sister as a birthday gift. After his sister and Purrloin became fast friends, Hugh decided to train Purrloin by having it battle against his Trapinch. Their battle alerted a pair of Team Plasma Grunts, who attacked Hugh and stole Purrloin. Claiming that if were stronger, he wouldn't have lost, Hugh swore revenge against Team Plasma. Back in the present, Hugh realized the owner of the pendant must be a member of Team Plasma and decided to reveal her true identity.
:"Hey! My sis has something she wants to tell you!"
:"There's more, right?"
:"I don't really get it, but I hear that the Zoroark from her dreams is on Victory Road! That's what she wanted to say. Be seeing you!"
:"Oh! Almost forgot. Congrats on becoming the Champion! I called it! You've got good instincts!"

;Floccesy Ranch
In Choir Tournament, Hugh's sister came to the Trainers' School to watch her brother take part in the Autumn Choir Tournament as a member of Team Jigglypuff. After facing off against a variety of other teams in the tournament, Team Jigglypuff emerged as the winner. Roxie, a judge, had her father take the winning team and their class to Castelia City to compete in the Unova Choir Tournament.
*Before battle
:"Oh! Nice! You've come here to toughen up! All right! Let's see how much stronger you've become! Come at me!"

*After the first non-KO hit
In Angry Boy, Hugh's sister managed to stow away on Pop Roxie's boat. She wanted a chance to talk to Hugh as they became distant after he started going to the Trainers' School. After Leo accidentally discovered them, he promised to help Hugh's sister hidden from the others. After they arrived, Roxie encountered an injured member of the executive committee for the Unova Choir Tournament. When the man revealed his Karrablast was stolen by Team Plasma, Hugh, Blake, Whitley, and Roxie headed to the Castelia Sewers to find the culprits. Shortly after they arrived, Hugh and the others encountered a group of Plasma Grunts. Hugh tried attacking, but was forced to run away when the Grunts sent their Muk to swarm everyone. After getting separated from the others, Hugh was approached by a Croagunk owned by Looker, who used a Xtransceiver to talk to Hugh. Croagunk's hat kept the Xtransceiver hidden, leading to Hugh assuming that Croagunk was the one talking. Looker tried asking Hugh what his connection to Team Plasma was, but Hugh refused to answer and ran off.
:"Come on, partner! Shrug it off! You're stronger than that!"

*Being defeated
In Therian Forme III, Hugh left the sewers and returned to Prime Pier, where his class was gathered. He revealed to everyone that Team Plasma returned and a member of their class is one of them, presenting the pendant as proof. Hugh decided to leave the school to fight Team Plasma, but was stopped by Whitley. Finding her behavior suspicious, the class suspected Whitley, but were affected by her Foongy's spores. After the others fell asleep, Hugh realized Whitley was the Team Plasma member he was searching for. Hugh offered to return the pendant if Whitley helped retrieve Purrloin, but before they could do anything, a flying ship known as the Plasma Frigate appeared. The ship used a cannon to freeze several buildings and civilians in an instant. Hugh managed to push Whitley and himself out of the way in time, but ended up falling unconscious.
:"It can't be! How could I have lost? I need to apologize to my partner..."

*After being defeated
In Abyssal Ruins, Hugh awakened at the Trainers' School. He was taken there by Rood of the Seven Sages, who revealed that Purrloin was safe in the care of someone else. Rood asked Hugh to give him the memory card, which contained data on a device capable of counteracting the Colress Machine, a tool that could control Pokémon. When a group of Plasma Grunts burst in the room to stop them, Hugh stayed behind to keep them busy and told Rood to find the memory card in his room. Once Rood succeeded, he and Hugh fled to another location run by good Team Plasma members. With the memory card, they built the device, which eventually successfully stopped the Colress Machine.
:"Not bad... You're thinking about how to bring out your Pokémon's strength. I should be able to count on you for backup! What are you doing here anyway? Huh? A Town Map?"
:"Tch... She didn't have to do that... Thanks to you, too. We just left, and you've already helped me out."

*When the owner and his wife turn up
In The Final Battle: Crushed Ambition, Hugh encountered Whitley again while infiltrating the Plasma Frigate. He apologized for his hostility towards her at Castelia, explaining that Rood told him everything about the internal situation within Team Plasma. He explained that he was looking for N, as he was told that his sister's Purrloin was in his care. Once N was freed from captivity, he agreed to return Purrloin, but only after Ghetsis was defeated. As they headed to where Ghetsis was, Hugh encountered the Grunts that stole Purrloin. While Whitley and N went ahead, Hugh stayed behind to get his revenge and was assisted by Foongy. Though the Grunts were easily defeated, one refused to give up and tried to continue the battle by sending out a liberated Snivy. When the Snivy refused to fight Hugh, having chosen to side with him instead, the Grunts immediately surrendered. A sudden explosion soon tore the Plasma Frigate apart from the inside, after which Hugh went to meet with the others. After everyone fled to safe ground and regrouped, the Plasma Frigate crashed into the abandoned N's Castle, setting it ablaze and putting the liberated Pokémon Team Plasma left behind in danger. Blake decided the best option to stop the fire was to combine the might of all three stages of the Unova first partner Pokémon. Teaming up with the Snivy he befriended, Hugh, Blake, Whitley, Black, White, Cheren, Bianca, Benga, and Cedric Juniper unleashed a triple, Grass Pledge, Fire Pledge, and Water Pledge combination attack, successfully dousing the flames. Afterward, Hugh and his sister were taken into N's Castle, where they were reunited with Purrloin.
:"Who are you?"
:"You're a little worried? Are you KIDDING me?! Your Pokémon might be lost forever! Whatever! I'll look! <player>! Help out!"

*While searching for the Herdier:
In Epilogue: Graduation Ceremony, Hugh was forcibly taken to the Trainers' School, where his classmates apologized for treating him poorly and begged him to start attending class again. Embarrassed, Hugh agreed to come back to school and apologized for his earlier behavior as well. Later, Hugh attended the Trainers' School graduation ceremony with his classmates.
:"Herdier, where did you go?"
:"Did Herdier... wander somewhere back here? Let's have a look!"
:"Oh! Here! I'll share something good with you!"
:"If your Pokémon is paralyzed, use one of these on it!"
:"Still, Pokémon don't just wander off on their own. In a worst-case scenario, it might be involved in some trouble!"
:"Did you hear that just now?"
:"I'll check this area! You go deeper in the grove and look!"
:"That cry! You found it! What a relief! OK, I'll go call its Trainer, so you stay here with it!"
:"You're awfully calm about this! Your Pokémon might have been gone for good! Take better care of it!"

:"What?! It isn't like I came here because I heard rumors about Cynthia being here and I wanted to challenge her or anything... I was interested in the Abyssal Ruins! See! Here's proof! You can have it!"
:"It's Dive! If you have a Pokémon that knows it, you can dive to the ocean floor. If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have found my sister's Purrloin... Or should I say her Liepard... OK! <player>! Let's see who are Aspertia's strongest Pokémon!"
::No: "What's the deal? Don't act all cool."
:::"Ok! <player>! Let's see who are Aspertia's strongest Pokémon!"
::Yes: "Go get 'em, guys!"

*After the first non-KO hit
:"Battling against you always gets me riled up!"

*Being defeated
:"This bitter...yet refreshing feeling."

*After being defeated
:"<player>... I'm really glad you're my friend!"

;Lacunosa Town
*Upon first talking to him
:"What's up? Have you seen Team Plasma anywhere around here? I heard a rumor to that effect..."
:"Shut your mouth. All I want is to get back a stolen Pokémon! <player>! Give me a hand! You ready?"
::No: "Got it! Go get ready and then come back here! Being careful against opponents like these isn't a bad thing!"
:::"Are you ready to pitch in? OK, let's go!"
::Yes: "Just so you know... You're about to feel my rage!"

*After defeating the Grunt and Zinzolin
:"Get back here!"

*Xtransceiver conversation
:"<Player>! A strange ship was flying toward Opelucid City, right?!"
:"Cheren! That's Team Plasma's ship, isn't it?"
:"OK, I'll leave things to you! <Player>! If you run into any trouble, call me!"

;If the player went to the Marine Tube
*Xtransceiver conversation
:"<Player>! Where are you? Undella Town? Got it! From there, go through the Marine Tube and come straight to Humilau City!"

;If the player went to Undella Bay
*Xtransceiver conversation
:"<Player>! Where are you? Close to Seaside Cave? Man, you sure picked the long way around! Whatever. Your call, I guess. Anyway, make up for that time, and get here now! You know you can get to Humilau City from Undella's Marine Tube, too, right?"

;Humilau City
:"We'll get the DNA Splicers back for sure! So you should focus on defeating the Gym Leader first!"

*If spoken to
:"After you get the Badge, we'll look for Team Plasma! I'm not gonna let the Unova region become an ice sculpture!"

*After the player defeated Marlon
:"You got all of the Badges! You're really something! Usually, you'd go to the Pokémon League now, but... dealing with Team Plasma comes first!"
:"Team Plasma does things like steal my sister's... I mean people's Pokémon. They plan on conquering Unova by using Pokémon to freeze it solid! They're really evil! Haven't you heard about them, Marlon?"
:"Man, I don't know if that guy is laid back or just irresponsible. That kinda got me down, but our opponent is Team Plasma! We have to focus! But, before that, we have to find where they are! OK! We'll split up! You check 22! Got it?"

;Xtransceiver
*Something up?
:"How're things going over there? ... Really... Give me a hand, then! Go check out Seaside Cave! That's right! The one on Route 21! OK! Counting on you!"

;21
*Upon locating the Plasma Frigate
:"You found them! I knew you could do it! But... How do we get in?"
:"I thought you weren't going to fight Team Plasma?"
:"Thanks..."
:"What was that?! The guy sure doesn't follow through! Well, I guess he was being kind in his own way... All right, I'm going in!"

;Plasma Frigate (second appearance)
*Upon arrival
:"Take care of that guy! He's no problem for you, right?"
:"OK! This time we'll check out the ship! When we were in Driftveil City, Zinzolin came from this direction!"
:"This is the place... OK! I'm going!"

*Inside the northern room
:"Just to let you know... You're about to feel my rage!"
:"They didn't have Purrloin with them! Barriers, huh..."
:"The Team Plasma member was saying... Oh, I got it. We should press the switches to deactivate the barriers! <Player>! Let's split up and look for them!/And there's a device where you enter a password here... That means... We either have to find the password, or get it out of Team Plasma, to deactivate the barriers. <Player>! Let's split up and find that password!"

*B1 Floor
:"Again?!"
:"It must be a hard job, keeping an eye on your former allies. Say, you don't know anything about a Purrloin stolen in Aspertia, do you?"
:"That's what I figured. I wouldn't expect someone from a group bent on world domination to be all that quick on the uptake."

*Upon Zinzolin presenting Kyurem to the player
:"Not with me around, you won't! Thanks for removing the barrier! That was a big help!"

*After they are defeated
:"I'm not going to lose to Team Plasma! By the way, what is this place? That Pokémon... It's so icy... Could that be the source of the attack on Opelucid City?"
:"That should be obvious! I'll do whatever it takes to get my sister's Pokémon back! Are YOU the one who stole a Purrloin in Aspertia five years ago?"
:"That's the ONLY Purrloin in the world that my late grandpa caught for my little sister!"
:"Don't mess with me! You were the one who lost!"

;Route 21
:"Team Plasma! No matter where you fly, I won't let you get away! But, what's over there anyway?"
:"The Giant Chasm! That's deep in 22, right? OK, I'm going! <Player>! You come too! That Pokémon... Kyurem, was it? Its cry sounded lonely somehow."

;Xtransceiver
*Something up? (after beating Team Plasma on Route 21)
:"They were headed for the Giant Chasm, weren't they?"

*Something up? (after reaching the Giant Chasm)
:"We're heading down into the Giant Chasm! I'm not letting Team Plasma get away!"

;Giant Chasm
*Upon arrival
:"You're already here, huh? Anyone who tries to block us will go running away with their tail between their legs!"
:"You're all alone now... So, which one of us are you gonna tackle?"
:"Oh, yeah... I remember you. Being ex-Team Plasma is really rough, eh?"
:"Well, I suppose... If we don't crush Team Plasma, then guys like you and that N guy will always be treated like villains. OK! I'm outta here, <player>!"

*In the Crater Forest
:"Come here. Wait a sec. He said he wants to talk to them so his old allies won't get hurt."
:"Well, that didn't work. Hey!"
:"Let me through!"
:"I'm going to get a stolen Pokémon back! I'm not gonna listen to villains like you! Rood! Ex-Team Plasma! Why do you have Pokémon by your sides? To protect what's important to you, right? Even if your precious Pokémon are hurt, even if your ideals are damaged, the time to fight is NOW!"
:"<player>! As usual, take the other one!"

*After defeating the Grunts
:"Thanks..."
:"I'm passing through! Oh, it looks like their backup has arrived."
:"Got it! If I rescue it, that helps you absolve your guilt, doesn't it? Guess I'll help you out!"

;Plasma Frigate (third appearance)
*If talked to (near the entrance of the Frigate)
:"Go on ahead! I'm going to make them tell me about the Shadow Triad! If you find Purrloin or the Shadow Triad, let me know!"

*If talked to again (before finding the Shadow Triad)
:"You... Where are the Shadow Triad?"

*Upon entering the Ghetsis's room
:"Wait... You're one of the Shadow Triad, right? Tell me about the Purrloin that was stolen in Aspertia."
:"Wh-what? Don't mess with me... That's someone else's Pokémon!"

*If talked to (before the Shadow Triad are defeated)
:"Sorry... This situation is messing with my head... I just don't know what to do... I finally found my sister's Pokémon, but now it's glaring at me... Why?!"

*After the Shadow Triad are defeated
:"... ... Hey... <player>... If we let Team Plasma do whatever we want... There'll be more sad Pokémon like Purrloin and Kyurem..."

*After Ghetsis is defeated
:"Team Plasma's ship flew away... Is it over?"
::No: "I suppose... You have to be the one who decides when it's over."
::Yes: "I see... So it's finally over."
:"More importantly, you rescued Kyurem from Team Plasma, right? You're really something! I'm...gonna make sure Purrloin gets back to my little sister! Still can't take it out of the Poké Ball yet, though..."
:"What are you gonna do? ... ... He said to go to the Pokémon League? That's a good idea! I mean, now you're the strongest in Unova, right? Go prove it! Do you remember where we first met up in the Giant Chasm? If you follow the path from there, it goes out onto 23 Victory Road and the Pokémon League are just past there!"

Hugh debuts in the Black 2 & White 2. He is a student at the Aspertia City Trainers' School, alongside his classmates Blake, Whitley, Leo, Yuki, Yuko, and Maya. Despite having a home of his own in Aspertia City, Hugh lives in the school dormitories, where he shares a room with Leo. Hugh is obsessed with getting stronger, which tends to put him at odds with his classmates, who tend to focus on things other than battling.

Hugh is first seen berating Blake and Leo for coming late to school. When their new teacher, Cheren, sees the argument, he forces the three to sit in the halls as a punishment for disrupting class. Later, Cheren hosts a small group battle between the boys and girls of the class. Hugh's first opponent on the boys side is Leo, who he easily defeats despite the latter being someone who competed in the previous Unova League. Eventually, Hugh is defeated by Blake, who receives a Pokédex alongside Whitley, who won the battles on the girls' side.

Later, the group travels to Pokéstar Studios. much to Hugh's annoyance as he questions how movies can help make him stronger. He is proven wrong when he finds out that despite the movie dialogue being scripted, the battles they have are actually real. He later watches as the Mecha Tyranitar from another set goes berserk and has to be stopped by Blake. Afterward, he overhears a group of his girl classmates excitedly talk about what to do about their upcoming culture festival. He gets angry at the girls, which offends them into commenting that they feel sorry for Hugh's younger sister due to her brother being unable to understand girls. This infuriates Hugh even further, who retaliates by attacking them. After Leo stops him and the girls have left in disgust at his actions, Hugh notices one of them dropped a locket with a microchip inside.

Hugh later checks out the microchip and finds out that it contains a list of Pokémon and their Trainers. When he finds his name inside the list, Hugh flashes back to five years ago. Back then, a younger Hugh obtains a Pidove, a Tynamo and a Purrloin from his grandfather, an Artist. From the three Pokémon, Hugh decides to give the Purrloin as a birthday gift for his sister for her birthday. As it refuses to listen to him, Hugh is forced to wrap the Purrloin itself rather than wrap its Poké Ball. He later gives it to his sister, who the Purrloin instantly takes a liking to despite attacking Hugh earlier. Hugh attempts to force his sister into training the Purrloin against her wishes, which gets them the attention of two Team Plasma Grunts. The Grunts attack Hugh, and despite his attempts to defend, he is easily defeated and Purrloin is stolen. As he lies on the ground unconscious, Hugh wonders if he didn't force his sister to train Purrloin, then it would not have been stolen. He quickly changes his mind to say that if he was stronger, he wouldn't have been defeated. He wakes up and swears revenge against Team Plasma.

Back in the present, Hugh realizes that the microchip contains a list of Pokémon liberated by Team Plasma and that he was the very first one they attacked. He also guesses that since it belonged to a girl in his class, one of them must be a member of Team Plasma and swears to reveal her true identity.

Later, Hugh competes in the Autumn Choral Competition as a member of Team Jigglypuff alongside Blake, Whitley, Leo, Yuki, Yuko, and Maya. Due to his sister being a part of the audience, Hugh forces himself to act nicer to his female classmates, much to his annoyance. After a hard battle against Team Sawsbuck, Team Jigglypuff emerges as the winners of the competition with the help of Blake's Dewott. As a reward for their performance, Roxie has her father take the winning team and their class to Castelia City to participate in the Unova Choral Competition.

As they travel, Hugh discovers that his sister has managed to stow away onto the ship. Hugh's sister reveals that she did so because she was worried about Hugh, who she had little time to interact with after he started attending the Trainers' School. In order to keep his sister from worrying, Hugh lies about finding the microchip and claims he was busy with schoolwork. He then tells her to keep herself hidden until they reach their destination. Shortly after arriving, Hugh's sister exits her hiding place to look for her brother. When she sees Leo running down the stairs, the sight of his Deino scares her, causing her to fall overboard. After Leo manages to save Hug's sister, Hugh thanks Leo and begs him not to tell anyone that his sister stowed away.

Upon reaching their destination, Hugh and Leo attempt to sneak away while being careful to let no one see Hugh's sister with them. At Castelia City, Roxie discovers a member of the executive committee for the Unova Choral Competition. The executive reveals that a group of villains attacked him and stole his Karrablast in an attempt to "liberate" it. Recognizing the term, Hugh immediately knows that it must be Team Plasma and sets out with Blake, Whitley, and Roxie in order to confront them. They track the attackers to the Castelia Sewers, but are attacked by a group of Muk shortly after entering the area. When Hugh sees that the Trainers commanding the Muk are Team Plasma members, he flies into a rage and begins attacking them. Hugh's attack fails and the Muk immediately begin swarming after everyone, forcing the group to scatter. As he hides from the rampaging Muk, Hugh is approached by a figure, which he believes to be Team Plasma. It actually turns out to be Looker's Croagunk. Looker talks to Croagunk with his Xtransceiver, but due to it being hidden by Croagunk's hat, Hugh assumes that Croagunk is actually the one talking.

Hugh (Japanese: ヒュウ Hyu) is the rival character in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2.

In the core series games

Hugh is the player's childhood friend. He is described as feeling passionately for Pokémon battles and Pokémon strength.

Hugh as a child in Pokémon Adventures

Hugh first appeared in the Black 2 & White 2 arc.

Teaming up with the Snivy he befriended, Hugh, Blake, Whitley, Black, White, Cheren, Bianca, Benga, and Cedric Juniper unleashed a triple, Grass, Fire, and Water Pledge combination attack, successfully dousing the flames. Afterward, Hugh and his sister were taken into N's Castle, where they were reunited with Purrloin.

Hugh
Main article: Hugh (Boundaries Crossed 130)

Hugh was introduced as a Supporter card in the Pokémon Trading Card Game during the English Black & White Series (the Japanese BW Era). First released in the Japanese Freeze Bolt expansion, it was later released as a BW-P Promotional card and debuted in English in the Boundaries Crossed expansion, with all three prints featuring an illustration based on the Yusuke Ohmura artwork of the character. Hugh causes both players to draw or discard cards until they each have five cards in their hands.

Trivia

 • During the Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 playthrough on the April 15, 2012 episode of Pokémon Smash!, they chose the name "Hihihiroshi" (Japanese: ひひひろし) for Hugh. The name was initially a backstage in-joke originating from when the Smash! cast was passing time by practicing singing Can You Name All the Pokémon? BW.[2] Following the Japanese naming conventions of the Klink evolutionary family, it was determined that Hihihiroshi was the final evolved form of Hiroshi Yamamoto.
 • In Challenge Mode, it is possible for his team to level down, with his first partner Pokémon, elemental monkey, and Unfezant being level 45, 43, and 43 respectively when battled in Undella Town, but all three being two levels lower when battling alongside the player in Lacunosa Town.
 • Some Team Plasma Grunts note that Hugh's hairstyle resembles a Qwilfish.
 • Hugh is the only nameable rival with a name already entered when the player is prompted to name him.
 • Hugh is the first rival who battles the player more than once with no other Pokémon but their first partner Pokémon.
 • Hugh is the only nameable player or rival character who is not a Pokédex holder nor has a game version name in the Pokémon Adventures manga.
