Holly first appeared rushing towards Ash and Cilan, hastily asking if they had seen Jirachi. Ash replied that Jirachi headed up the nearby mountain the night before. She attempted to rush up to the mountain to find Jirachi, but she tripped and injured her ankle. After being treated by her mother, Lotus, Holly rushed out. Her mother stopped her and inquired what she was in such a hurry for. Holly replied that she was in pursuit of Jirachi, but Lotus reminded her that Jirachi is very shy to humans. Holly was still determined, however, to have Jirachi grant her wish, as Jirachi is known to do so. Lotus told Ash and his friends that the valley they live in on Ōkina Island was once a vibrant, fertile land with plenty of vegetation. Increasing temperatures, however, caused the land to dry up, and thus Holly's neighbors moved away. Since then, Holly hoped that a wish granted by Jirachi could restore the land to what it was. Ash and co. decided to help Holly find Jirachi, so the group headed out.
They arrived at Jirachi's shrine, where, according to Holly, Jirachi was known to reside. They headed to the other side of the mountain, where they found a land almost identical to what Holly's village once was: fertile land, vegetation, as well as a civilization of Pokémon. Cilan speculated that this was where Jirachi might be hiding, so the four headed behind a boulder hoping not to scare it off. Ultimately, Jirachi showed up. Holly was eager to approach Jirachi, but Cilan said she might scare it away by doing so. Knowing that Jirachi had successfully warmed up to them the night before, Ash and Iris sent Pikachu and Axew over. The two figured as soon as Pikachu and Axew befriended Jirachi, Jirachi would warm up to the humans as well. Holly, however, could not resist, and ran over to Jirachi begging it to grant her wish. This frightened Jirachi, however, and it escaped with a Swift. The group decided to call it a day and headed back to Holly's house for dinner.
Holly was disappointed about her failed encounter with Jirachi. Cilan said that she shouldn't have approached Jirachi the way she did. Ash and Iris reassured Holly that they would eventually find Jirachi, much to Holly's relief. The group headed out again the next day. They looked in any place around the valley Jirachi could be hiding, but without luck. They tried again the next two days, but still no luck.
The following morning, the three were stumped as to where Jirachi could be. Ash mentioned that they were running out of time, as Jirachi are only awake for seven nights at a time, which made Holly panic. That night, Lotus told Ash and co. that she believed Holly had good intentions, and Jirachi would eventually understand her. Holly, according to her, had already been grieving over the loss and depression of her father, Cacto, when the land became a dry valley. This made Ash and his friends understand how hard it really has been for Holly, and they tried their hardest to find Jirachi the next day. At first, they had a hard time getting Jirachi to come, but with encouragement from Ash, they finally got Jirachi to come. Holly finally got to calmly tell Jirachi of her valley's hardships and how Jirachi could help to restore it. Just when Jirachi finally got to understand her, though, it was kidnapped by Team Rocket, who had overheard Holly's intention to find Jirachi the first night. Though Jirachi managed to break free and send Team Rocket blasting off, it was badly weakened. While trying to revive Jirachi, Holly's father Cacto returned, to her suprise. Cacto told Holly to return Jirachi to the shrine so it could rest. Though disappointed, Holly did so. Jirachi soon revived itself, however, to Holly's delight, and restored the valley to its former glory. Cacto and Holly were joyed, though Holly was sad for Jirachi to leave and place itself back in its "egg". Holly's family then happily reunited.
