Hau (Japanese: ハウ Hau) is a character introduced in Pokémon Sun and Moon.

In the games

Hau is described as a big-hearted boy who quickly befriends the player once they move to the Alola region. He is Hala's grandson, and his favorite food is malasada, a famous treat in the Alola region.

He is introduced as the grandson of Hala, who is also the Kahuna of Melemele Island. Once the player has chosen a starter Pokémon, Hau will challenge the player using the starter Pokemon weak to the player's choice. Upon losing, he quickly shrugs off his defeat as he says that he is having fun. He also embarks on the Island challenge at the same time as the player, and completes the challenges at around the same pace. Hau's happy-go-lucky attitude affects most of his early battles as he didn't mind losing, something that irritates Gladion after their first battle.

Hau joins the player on a tour in the Aether Paradise after finishing their Akala Island trails. In here, he was shocked to hear from Lusamine that she was forty years old, and also comments that she looks like Lillie without knowing of their connection.

When the Aether Building is raided by Team Skull, Hau manages to win a battle against a Team Skull Grunt, but says that battles he can't win aren't any fun. Before the player returns from Po Town, Hau loses a critical battle against Team Skull Admin Plumeria when she and her grunts kidnaps Lillie.

Hau joins the player and Gladion in their attempt to rescue Lillie and her Cosmog from the Aether Foundation. He is constantly irritated by Gladion's orders and lack of explaining, but manages to take down several Aether Foundation Employee with him and the player before reaching Lillie. He is surprised when Lusamine reveals that Lillie and Gladion were her children. When Lusamine attempts to open up the Ultra Beasts wormholes, Gladion orders Hau to keep Guzma busy while he deals with the recently-arrived Nihilego, but Lusamine and Guzma manages to achieve their objective and escape.

When the player is about to travel to Poni Island, Hau expresses his intention to hold back the Island Challenge and train himself with Hala instead, finding himself not sufficiently strong enough yet. When the player is about to enter the Pokémon League building, Hau catches up to them and challenges the player to another battle. Upon losing, Hau reaffirms his determination to get stronger, and spurs the player on for his Pokémon League challenge.

When the player achieves the title of Champion, Hau is one of the possible NPCs who can challenge the player for the title, implying that he has completed all his Island Trials.

Pokémon

Hau picks the starter Pokémon weak to the player's choice, and at his second encounter, will begin raising a Pikachu and always use it as the first Pokémon in his party. This Pikachu eventually evolves into an Alolan Raichu. Hau will also raise a Pokemon that is effective against the player's starter Pokemon by his third encounter.

Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon Special Demo Version

Hau'oli City Hall
"Hey, is your name Sun?"
Regardless of choice: "I’m Hau! Nice to meet you! I’m glad my grandpa asked me to come to City Hall. I got to meet you, after all!"
"Are you Sun’s mom? Nice to meet you!"
"Ooh, that sounds like a great idea! I’ll show you all the coolest stuff, Sun!"
Hau'oli City Shopping District
"Waahh! It’s Team Skull! These baddies are always stealing Pokémon from people!"
"Pokémon are our friends! We can’t just give them to you!"
"Sun, you’ve got a Pokémon, right? Let’s give these guys a Pokémon battle!"
"There’s nothing to be scared of as long as we’ve got Pokémon by our side, eh? Sun, your Pokémon’s called Greninja, right? That’s so cool! Follow me! I’ll show you where the Pokémon Center is. I wanna heal up my Pokémon, too!"
  • Upon approaching the Pokémon Center.
"Sun! The Pokémon Center’s over here!"
Hau'oli City Pokémon Center
"If you talk to the woman at the counter, she can restore your Pokémon to perfect health. Or you can use Potions to heal your Pokémon. Oh, that reminds me, Sun! Here, you can have one of my Super Potions!"
"All right, where should we go next?"
Hau'oli City Shopping District - After visiting the Pokémon Center
"Hi, Professor Kukui! This is Sun! He moved here from the Kanto region—all the way across the ocean!"
"Professor Kukui is researching Pokémon moves."
"Hey, Professor, you should train Sun!"
"We just ran into those Team Skull thugs, and it got pretty rough!"
"I know you and Greninja can do it, Sun!"
Ten Carat Hill Caldera
"Sun! Whoa, you got a Z-Ring! I guess you cleared the trial, eh? Congratulations! I’ve got a trial for you, too! Look over there!"
"I forgot that I gave you my Super Potion, and I had to run away all the way out here!"
"You’re awesome, Sun!"
"I wanna be an awesome Trainer, too!"
"Hey, Sun, now that you’re finished with the trial, I’ll show you the way to the malasada shop!"
"Woo-hoo! Let’s bring Sun’s mom, too!"
"All right, I’m about to eat every malasada in the shop!"
