Hala (Japanese: ハラ Hala)  is a character introduced in Sun and Moon. He is the grandfather of Hau and the kahuna of Melemele Island. He specializes in Fighting Pokémon and grants the Melemele stamp to Trainers who defeat him. In Sun and Moon, he also becomes a member of the Alola Elite Four.

In the games
In the core series games
As Kahuna of Melemele Island, Hala is considered one of the island's strongest trainers. Hau is his grandson.
As kahuna of Melemele Island, Hala is considered one of the island's strongest Trainers. Hau is his grandson.

Together with Professor Kukui, Hala gives the player and Hau their starter Pokémon. He later leads a ceremony celebrating the beginning of the player and Hau's careers as Pokémon Trainers. The player eventually battles him in the grand trial of the Melemele island challenge.
In Pokémon Sun and Moon, Hala gives the player their first partner Pokémon. The next day, he leads a ceremony celebrating the beginning of the player and Hau's careers as Pokémon Trainers. The player eventually battles him in the grand trial of the Melemele island challenge.

When Ultra Wormholes begin appearing across Alola, Hala encounters UB-02 Buzzwole/Pheromosa. Before he can send out a Pokémon to battle, Tapu Koko appears to battle the Ultra Beast. Hala agrees to work together with the guardian deity, and together, they fend off the intruder.

Hala is later revealed to be one of the Trainers Professor Kukui invited to act as the Elite Four of the Pokémon League of Alola.
Later, Hala is re-encountered at the newly founded Alola Pokémon League, having been invited by Professor Kukui to be a member of the Elite Four.

Hala keeps his Pokémon in Ultras.
In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Hala's role is slightly altered. The player now receives their first partner Pokémon from Professor Kukui instead, although they still technically belong to Hala. When Ultra Beasts start appearing in Alola, Hala comes face to face with a Blacephalon/Stakataka, but this time, he's accompanied by Hau, and decides to leave the fight to his grandson, who is soon joined by Tapu Koko.

At the Pokémon League, Hala's position as an Elite Four member is instead taken up by Molayne. Despite this, Hala can still be challenged to a rematch once during the post-game. Upon defeating him in the rematch, Hala will award the player with the two Z-Crystals for the final evolutions of the other two Alolan first partner Pokémon that the player did not pick at the beginning of the game.

After Ash gave him the answer, he led Ash to Verdant Cavern, a trial site inhabited by a Totem Gumshoos, so that Ash could start his island challenge. Following Ash's victory, he became qualified to take on Hala's grand trial.
:"The Alola region is made up of our four islands. And each island has its own guardian Pokémon. Our festival today is held to express our thanks to these great Pokémon guardian deities for always remaining by our sides. Well, we may call it a festival, but it’s just this little thing you see here. There may not be many of us, but at least every last one of us here goes all out."
:"Your Pokémon have fought for you, so show them the same care in return, <player>. Allow me to heal them for you this time."
:"Are you ready for this Pokémon battle?"
::Yes: "Then let’s begin!"
::No: "When you feel that you’re ready, come back and tell me."

* Before the ceremony battle
In Trial and Tribulation!, Hala was Ash's opponent in his Melemele grand trial. After a tough battle, Ash emerged victorious. Hala was about to give Ash a Fightinium Z as a reward, but suddenly, Tapu Koko swooped in and swapped it with an Electrium Z, which Hala gave to Ash instead.
:"For all life on our islands... and for those who undertake the island challenge with joy in their hearts... we pray for your protection... for them and all Melemele. May this Pokémon battle be an offering to our island’s guardian deity—Tapu Koko!"
:"Before you stands Hau—grandson to the kahuna."
:"Before him stands <player>— one who has met with Tapu Koko."
:"<Player>! Hau! Bring forth the power of your Pokémon!"

* After the ceremony battle
In Family Determination!, Hala informed Ash and ashcl of the legend of Solgaleo and the Altar of the Sunne. In The Professors' New Adventure!, he attended the wedding of Professor Kukui and Professor Burnet.
:"It was a good battle. With this, even Tapu Koko..." (Tapu Koko's voice are sounded across the town) "Ho! You heard it yourself! Tapu Koko’s song of approval."
:"Oh, I nearly forgot! I think it is time you take this, <player>."
:"Your Z-Ring, a mysterious armband that can draw out the power that lies deep within Pokémon... It can bring forth their Z-Power. We kahunas can make them by refining stones like the Sparkling Stone that you received from Tapu Koko. Although until you collect more Z-Crystals during your island challenge, you will not be able to draw out the Z-Power of your Pokémon. And yet you have already received that Sparkling Stone... It seems Tapu Koko took quite a liking to you... or perhaps it has a mission for you. In other words, it’s time for you to get out there and start your island challenge! If you visit every island, maybe you’ll figure out what that mission is."

;Hau'oli City
In Getting a Jump on the Competition!, Hala visited Mount Lanakila, where he and his Crabrawler battled a Sneasel and won, allowing Crabrawler to evolve into Crabominable. Later, along with Crabominable, he entered the Pokémon Sled Jump Games and won.
;Near Trainer's School
:"Ho! If it isn’t Lillie and <player>. Sorry for scaring you, friend. I guess it’s time I get old Tauros back home. Oh! But why don’t you give him a little pat first, <player>?"
:"Ha ha ha! You see that? This rascal already loves you! Pokémon become happier when we show them some care."
:"Wa ha ha! Oh the places you’ll go, child! And as you do, you will surely meet more Pokémon and people who will enrich your life."

;Near path to Route 2
He reappeared in the Poké Problem segment of SM079, where he was watching a Minior shower with Hariyama.
* If spoken to when player hasn't finished exploring Hau'oli City

:"<Player>! You stand back. Old kahuna Hala will take care of this ornery Tauros! Why don’t you take a stroll through Hau’oli?"
In Full Moon and Many Arms!, Hala and Hariyama watched the battle between Lunala and Necrozma. Because of Necrozma's presence, he became tired and lacked motivation, but he was eventually restored when Necrozma disappeared. He later prayed at the Ruins of Conflict while he waited for the Manalo Festival to begin. In Securing the Future!, Hala joined the rest of Alola in restoring Necrozma to its List of Pokémon with form differences by lending it some of his Z-Power.
* After player finished exploring Hau'oli City
:"Hah!"
:"There! <Player>, I’ve got this ornery creature calmed again, for now. Want to try giving him a little pat again? That’s the only way he’ll get used to you."
:"Maybe old Tauros here can feel your love for Pokémon. He sure seems happy to know you. And yet... It still seems to me like Tauros wants to stretch his legs on his own island challenge! Ha!"
:"What! You want to play tag, now? The Melemele kahuna never loses, friend!"

;Iki Town
He reappeared in a flashback in No Stone Unturned!.
;Grand Trial of Melemele Island
:"Congratulations on clearing your trial in the Verdant Cavern. Good work. I suppose you are here to battle the kahuna? You think you and <First Pokémon in party> are ready for me, <player>?"
::Definitely! "I have been waiting for this!"
::Please wait "I will. But come speak with me as soon as you are ready."
* If talked to again
:"Are you here to battle the kahuna? <Player>! <First Pokémon in party>!"
* Before battle
:"Ho! I have been expecting you. Allow me to properly greet the young adventurers embarking on their island challenge. I am Hala, the kahuna of Melemele Island."
:"Shall we begin? The final trial here on Melemele Island will be a Pokémon battle against me, the kahuna! It is known as the grand trial! "
:* If player only has one Pokémon in party
::"Well, <player>! You have been entrusted with the Sparkling Stone by Tapu Koko! Now show me you and your partner <first Pokémon in party>’s full power!"
:*If player has more than one Pokémon in party
::"Well, <player>! You have been entrusted with the Sparkling Stone by Tapu Koko! Now show me you and your partner <first Pokémon in party> and your team’s full power!"
:"Old Hala here will also be going all out! Let the grand trial begin!"
* Being defeated
:"Whoa! Well played!"
* After being defeated
:"...Hmmph! The results come as no surprise to me. What a fine Trainer...and what fine Pokémon, too!"
:"Ho! And our mighty Tapu Koko agrees!"
:"Hmmph! Perhaps Tapu Koko is hoping that a day may come when you will grow strong enough to battle it as well... Accept this Z-Crystal! It allows Trainers to share their power with their partner Pokémon!"
:"Observe, <player>. If you wish to use the Fighting Z-Power, move your arm like this... then bend your hips like this and pose!"
:"Now then, <player>! With this victory... you have cleared all of the trials of Melemele Island, the first of Alola’s islands! The Melemele stamp is proof of your accomplishments. With it, Pokémon up to Lv. 35, even those you received in a trade, will obey you!"
:"The moon in the daytime... The sun at night... Now to see if you can pour your heart into something that cannot be seen but is very much real. As you continue on your island challenge, consider what makes up the people and Pokémon that you meet: both what you can see and what you cannot. You will surely meet Tapu Koko again someday."

;Getting Poké Ride
In Beauty is Only Crystal Deep!, Hala was working on a Z-Ring when Ultra Beasts (anime) arrived at his house. He and Hariyama attempted to battle it, but Pheromosa managed to steal his Fightinium Z before fleeing when the Ultra Guardians arrived on the scene.
:"Whoa there, Tauros!"
:"I’ve got an idea! How about I set you up so you can ride my Tauros whenever you’d like? No reason why he shouldn’t get to enjoy the island challenge, too!"
:"I’ll take care of all the little things you’ll need in order to ride a Pokémon, <player>!"
:"Why don’t you hop on there?"
* After the player rides the Tauros
:"The world looks a bit different from atop a mighty Tauros, eh? See, <player>. Here in Alola our Pokémon lend us their strength and let us ride about on them!"
:"Let me explain some of the gear I gave you... Your Ride Pager is a tool that lets you summon a Ride Pokémon. According to the instructions, you need only  “press the Y Button to turn on your Ride Pager! Use the B Button to dash!”"
:"And your Riding Wear will be the special outfit you wear when riding Pokémon."
:"Have a little romp around Alola with Tauros here. I’m sure you’ll be charmed by him! When you use your Ride Pager, Ride Pokémon will kindly come running to help you wherever you may be!"
:"All right, <player>. With a little help from Tauros, you can smash right through those big rocks on Route 1!"

;Mahalo Trail
In The Dealer of Destruction!, Hala, his fellow kahunas, and Lusamine helped Professor Kukui reveal the Alola League to the public.
:"Dooot doo doo, just a kahuna on a stroll to the laguna. ♪"
:"Wait, this disturbance I feel..."
* After the appearance of Ultra Beast
:"Oh, this one’s a Buzzwole Pheromosa! You have come before the island kahuna!"
:"Did Tapu Koko come here as a guardian or just to battle? The other islands must surely be facing the same threat. I’m counting on you, my comrades... As kahuna of this island, I, Hala, will support you!"

;Pokémon League
In The Secret Princess!, Lillie visited Hala after she came across her father's Z-Ring, which he earned from the island kahuna himself years prior. She sought his permission to use the Z-Ring, and Hala accepted on one condition: that Lillie be able to perform a Z-Move with Snowy. Lillie took up the challenge, but the Z-Power failed to completely charge up. Even so, Hala was touched by Lillie's ambition to train hard and connect with her father. As a result, he allowed her to keep the Z-Ring temporarily.
* Upon entering Fighting Chamber
:"Old Hala is here to make you holler!"
;First battle
* Before battle
:"Your old kahuna is now also a member of the Elite Four. Well, this time I’m holding nothing back! Time for you to see what I can really do!"
* Upon being defeated
:"I could feel the power you gained on your journey through Alola."

* Upon being defeated
:"I sensed the strength that you possess as Champion."
* After being defeated
:"A heart-pounding battle like that always sends a shiver through my whole body! I’m sure my Pokémon felt it, too!"
* General afterword
:(If chosen first) "Oh ho ho! So it’s me who faced you first. Defeating the Elite Four will become a fine part of our island challenge!"
:(If chosen second) "Oh ho ho! So I was the second to face you? Some people would say you’re halfway there, while some may say you’ve still got halfway to go. How you see it is up to you."
:(if chosen third) "Oh ho ho! So I was the third to face you? If you’ll take a bit of advice from this old man, I wouldn’t let my guard down yet if I were you."
:(If chosen last) "Oh ho ho! So I was the last to face you? But then who do you think awaits you in the Champion’s chamber?"

;Entering Hall of Fame
In A Timeless Encounter!, Hala appeared in a flashback, where he defeated an Ace Trainer while being watched by a young Professor Kukui.
:"You’ve entered the Hall of Fame! Spectacular! Much as the sun shines upon the moon, illuminating it, so have the friends you made during your island challenge illuminated your life. You have grown so much!"
:"The first ever Champion of the Alola Pokémon League! Let’s celebrate so grandly that even the sun and moon themselves will take notice! Ha!"

;Iki Town (Celebration)
In Battle Royal 151!, Hala appeared alongside his fellow kahunas, acting as a referee during the Battle Royal round of the Manalo Conference. In Battling Besties!, Hala refereed the first pair of first-round matches: one between Ash and Faba, and the other between Guzma and Ilima—before watching Hau's match against Samson Oak.
:"Here he/she is! The first Pokémon League  Champion from Alola! This calls for celebration, so let’s all get to it!"

;Hau'oli City Beachfront (post-game)
In Imitation Is the Sincerest Form of Strategy!, Hala watched the battle between Hau and Ash. In the next episode, Nanu declared Hau the winner when Hau's Decidueye stood up after a clash with Ash's Rowlet. However, the verdict was overruled by Hala after he pointed out that Rowlet had fallen asleep instead of being knocked out. Hala later comforted Hau after the latter's loss to Ash. Afterwards, he refereed the battle between Kiawe and Sophocles. Then, from The Road to The Semifinals! to Enter the Champion!, he watched the rest of the battles in the stands for the remainder of the tournament. After the final battle ended, Hala attended the award ceremony for the winner, only for it to be interrupted when a Ultra Beasts (anime) arrived at the stadium through an Ultra Wormhole.
:"Well played, <player>!
:"What a high opinion of yourself you have. Ha! I just happened to see <player> here, so I thought I would come over."
:"Oh, Guzma...when will you understand? Only when you respect your opponent’s skill will it bring out the best in you. You miss the true meaning of battling. The goal is not to beat your opponent down, but for both Trainers to grow stronger!"
:"But the battle I just saw seemed a bit different. While you may say you’re only interested in crushing your opponent, I sensed a desire to defeat <player> deep in your heart."
:"If you continue on this path, you’ll never be able to defeat <player>! Guzma, admit the worthiness of your opponents! Only then can you become even stronger than you already are! Allow yourself to know the people and Pokémon you encounter, and look deeply into your heart."
:"<Player>, allow me to handle this foolish young man. I will make a fine Trainer out of him yet, or I’m not an island kahuna! I hope that can be considered penance for the wrongs he and Team Skull have committed."
:"Oh ho ho! The two of us will go many places together! And we will meet more people and Pokémon who will enrich our lives."

;Iki Town (Hala's home)
In Z-Move Showdown!, Hala and the other island kahunas joined forces to battle Guzzlord. The guardian deities later came to their assistance, using their powers to keep Guzzlord in place long enough for Hala and the others to fire off their Z-Moves. The combined attacks launched Guzzlord back into the wormhole it came out of, successfully sending it back into Ultra Space.
:"Oh, <player>! How’s Alola treating you? The sun shines all on its own, and the moon shines down reflected light. Each of them lights our world, one in the daytime and the other at night. If you prefer brightness, then live in the light. If you prefer darkness, then you can find people and Pokémon that can suit that taste, too."

GOTCHA!
Hala briefly appeared in GOTCHA!.

In the manga
Pokémon Adventures
Hala debuted in The Delivery of Rotom and the Girl. He was first seen with his fellow kahunas, Olivia and Nanu, at Malie Garden, where they discussed the sightings of the guardian deities around Alola. They speculated that the normally reclusive guardian deities appearing before people must have been caused by them being angered by something.

In Pokémon Move Specialist Professor Kukui, Hala refereed a battle between Nanu and Olivia in order to test a stage to be used in an upcoming festival. During the battle, Nanu angered Olivia into using her Z-Power. When Nanu retaliated with his own Z-Move, Hala interrupted the battle. The kahunas decided that they will use the festival to have Alolan youths battle against each other. The strongest participants would travel around Alola's four islands, imitating the island challenge, in order to calm the guardian deities' rage.

In The Final Match and a Surprising Finale!, the Iki Town festival officially began. Once sundown had arrived, Hala referred the festival tournament alongside Samson Oak.

In Going Ashore and Neighboring Akala Island, Professor Kukui received a call from Hala on his yacht as he transported Sun and Moon to Akala Island. Hala talked to Sun, who had won the tournament, and revealed that the boy is now eligible to take part in the island challenge. Although Sun is initially reluctant to take part in the challenge due to needing to obtain a large sum of money, he immediately accepted once he is told that he would be paid for participating. Hala also revealed that he took Sun's Sparkling Stone so that he may work on it.

In Defeat and the Commander of the School of Fish, Hala was visited at his home by Kahili, who he had requested return to Alola from abroad in order to aid in helping stop the guardian deities' rage. Kahili revealed that shortly after arriving in Alola, she began investigating Melemele Island and was attacked by a Buzzwole and Kartana at Melemele Meadow. While the two Ultra Beasts disappeared shortly after she tried fighting back, Kahili speculated that they may be the source of the guardian deities' rage. Eventually, Hala successfully turned Sun's Sparkling Stone into a Z-Ring, which he gave to Kahili so that she may deliver it to Sun.

In Thieving and Boss Crabominable, Hala, Olivia, and Nanu met at Hala's house, where they decided to make Hapu the next kahuna of Poni Island. Afterward, Olivia and Nanu decided to head back to their respective islands to assist the Trial Captains fend off the Ultra Beasts that appeared in Alola. Just before Nanu could open the door to leave, the Kartana and Buzzwole that had attacked Kahili before burst into the building. Olivia and Nanu offered to help Hala battle the two beasts, but he refused and told them to defend their islands instead.

In Adventure in the Dark Dimension, the island kahunas and Trial Captains were revealed to have spent six months on Exeggutor Island training to prepare for another clash with the Ultra Beasts. Later, Hala was asked by Hau to participate in the battle to protect Alola. Though Hala had already refused a previous request, Hau revealed he had been training by himself while traveling around Alola and unknowingly obtained a Sparkling Stone, which was made into a Z-Ring by Olivia. Seeing the Z-Ring and Hau's determination, Hala agreed to train his grandson.

Hala took Hau to Resolution Cave, where they sparred until Hau's Brionne evolved into a Primarina. After finishing their training, Hala decided they should join the others on Mount Lanakila, only to be interrupted by a battle between Tapu Fini and a Buzzwole. After learning the others were also battling the Ultra Beasts, Hau and Hala teamed up to assist Tapu Fini.

Pokémon Horizon
Hala appeared in Mastering the Z-Move!. Akira and Mana sought his help in order to grow stronger during their island challenge, so he demonstrated them how to use a Z-Move. However, since Akira was unable to perform a Z-Move, Hala deduced that he wasn't one with nature yet and decided to put him through a trial: if he could make a Wimpod drop its guard and approach it without it running away, it'd be a sign that he had become one with nature. Once Akira had succeeded in the given task and successfully used a Z-Move against a Totem Lucario, Hala declared that he had passed the trial.

Hala (Japanese: ハラ Hala) is a character introduced in Pokémon Sun and Moon. He is the grandfather of Hau and the kahuna of Melemele Island. He specializes in Fighting-type Pokémon and grants the Melemele stamp to Trainers who defeat him. In Sun and Moon, he also becomes a member of the Alola Elite Four.

In the core series games

As kahuna of Melemele Island, Hala is considered one of the island's strongest Trainers. Hau is his grandson.

In Pokémon Sun and Moon, Hala gives the player their first partner Pokémon. The next day, he leads a ceremony celebrating the beginning of the player and Hau's careers as Pokémon Trainers. The player eventually battles him in the grand trial of the Melemele island challenge.

When Ultra Wormholes begin appearing across Alola, Hala encounters UB-02 AbsorptionS/BeautyM. Before he can send out a Pokémon to battle, Tapu Koko appears to battle the Ultra Beast. Hala agrees to work together with the guardian deity, and together, they fend off the intruder.

Later, Hala is re-encountered at the newly founded Alola Pokémon League, having been invited by Professor Kukui to be a member of the Elite Four.

In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Hala's role is slightly altered. The player now receives their first partner Pokémon from Professor Kukui instead, although they still technically belong to Hala. When Ultra Beasts start appearing in Alola, Hala comes face to face with a BlacephalonUS/StakatakaUM, but this time, he's accompanied by Hau, and decides to leave the fight to his grandson, who is soon joined by Tapu Koko.

Hala in the anime

As revealed in League Offenders and Defenders!, Hala was once Professor Kukui and Guzma's mentor. He attempted to keep the peace between the pair, but Guzma became disillusioned with Hala's teachings and decided to become strong on his own without using a Z-Ring or Z-Crystals.

Hala debuted in To Top a Totem!, where he was revealed to be the one who made the Z-Ring that Tapu Koko gave to Ash in Alola to New Adventure!. He tasked Ash with finding a nonviolent way to drive out a group of wild Alolan Rattata and Raticate. After Ash gave him the answer, he led Ash to Verdant Cavern, a trial site inhabited by a Totem Gumshoos, so that Ash could start his island challenge. Following Ash's victory, he became qualified to take on Hala's grand trial.

In Family Determination!, Hala informed Ash and his classmates of the legend of Solgaleo and the Altar of the Sunne. In The Professors' New Adventure!, he attended the wedding of Professor Kukui and Professor Burnet.

He reappeared in the Poké Problem segment of SM079, where he was watching a Minior shower with Hariyama.

A younger Hala

In Full Moon and Many Arms!, Hala and Hariyama watched the battle between Lunala and Necrozma. Because of Necrozma's presence, he became tired and lacked motivation, but he was eventually restored when Necrozma disappeared. He later prayed at the Ruins of Conflict while he waited for the Manalo Festival to begin. In Securing the Future!, Hala joined the rest of Alola in restoring Necrozma to its true form by lending it some of his Z-Power.

He reappeared in a flashback in No Stone Unturned!.

In Beauty is Only Crystal Deep!, Hala was working on a Z-Ring when Pheromosa arrived at his house. He and Hariyama attempted to battle it, but Pheromosa managed to steal his Fightinium Z before fleeing when the Ultra Guardians arrived on the scene.

In The Dealer of Destruction!, Hala, his fellow kahunas, and Lusamine helped Professor Kukui reveal the Alola League to the public.

In A Timeless Encounter!, Hala appeared in a flashback, where he defeated an Ace Trainer while being watched by a young Professor Kukui.

After the final battle ended, Hala attended the award ceremony for the winner, only for it to be interrupted when a Guzzlord arrived at the stadium through an Ultra Wormhole.

From Exhibition Unmasked! to From Z to Shining Z!, Hala refereed the exhibition match between Ash and Professor Kukui.

Hala appeared in a fantasy in Dreams of the Sun and Moon!.

In Thank You, Alola! The Journey Continues!, Hala acted as the referee of Hau's grand trial battle against Nanu and his Alolan Persian.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series

In Helping the Hometown Hero!, Hala hosted a party to welcome Lillie and her family back to Alola after they found Mohn. The next day, Hala watched a Battle Royal match between Ash, Kiawe, Gladion, and Professor Kukui.

Hala is a carefree individual. He is also respected for his knowledge, experience, and adherence to Alola traditions. As such, many characters often seek out Hala for advice, like Lillie in The Secret Princess!. GOTCHA!

Hala in Pokémon Adventures
