This card was released in the English {{TCG|Base Set}} with an illustration by [[Mitsuhiro Arita]], first originating from the Japanese {{TCG|Expansion Pack}}. In Japan, this card was reprinted with artwork by [[Ryouichi Abe]], one of five winning entries of the CoroCoro [[Pokémon Snap]] [[Illustration contests#CoroCoro Best Photo Contest|Best Photo Contest]] held in Spring 1999. This version is extremely rare and the exact number in existence is unknown. The Base Set print was reprinted in the English {{TCG|Base Set 2}} and {{TCG|Legendary Collection}} expansions.

Dragon Rage and Bubble Beam are both moves in the Pokémon games that Gyarados can learn, the latter only in Generation I via TM11. This card's English Pokédex entry comes from Pokémon Red and Blue, whereas the Japanese entry comes from Pokémon Red and Green.
