The first two rounds are Appeal stages. Coordinators must twice produce impressive appeals with their Pokémon in order to progress through the tournament and only the best 32 coordinators go through to the finals. Each round takes place on a separate day.

On the third day of the tournament, the Coordinators face each other in knock-out double battles. Matches last for five minutes and the Coordinator with the least points loses if both opponents still have a Pokémon standing. The Coordinator who wins all four matches is the winner of the tournament.
In the battle portion, Coordinators shows how skilled they and their Pokémon are when put into battle. All battles follow the Double Battle style. Competing Coordinators are matched-up randomly by computer up to the semifinals, which is the last round that computer will choose a random match-up. Whoever loses is out of the tournament. The Coordinator who wins the fifth and final round of this portion is then declared the winner of the entire competition.

Trivia
* Apparently, the Grand Festival do not check to see who wins what ribbons, or there are more than one contest in each town a year as people can enter the Grand Festival with Ribbons they have not won in contests themselves. (For example, Jessie entered the Sinnoh Grand Festival with a contest ribbon won officially by Dawn—technically by Princess Salvia posing as Dawn but none of the officials were aware of this).
* Apparently, a Grand Festival may be entered with Ribbons won by anyone, regardless of if the entrant was the winner of the required five Contests or not. This is seen by the fact that Jessilina entered the Sinnoh Grand Festival with a Ribbon that was won by Princess Salvia posing as Dawn.

The Grand Festival (Japanese: グランドフェスティバル Grand Festival) is the anime-exclusive final challenge for all Pokémon Coordinators. The tournament is held once a year in several regions and is the Pokémon Contests' analog to the Pokémon League Conference.

Competition

The general structure of each Grand Festival is similar: Pokémon Coordinators must win at least five Contest Ribbons of a specific region in order to be able to participate in that region's Grand Festival. The winner receives the Ribbon Cup, as well as the title of Top Coordinator.

Due to the large number of participants, Grand Festivals has more judges in attendance.

The Hoenn Grand Festival is held in Slateport City, while the Kanto Grand Festival is held at Indigo Plateau. The Sinnoh Grand Festival is held at Lake Valor, which is also where the most recent Wallace Cup was held. There is also a Grand Festival for the Johto region, though it is unknown where it is held.

Rounds

The tournament is divided into two parts: the appeals portion and the battle portion.

Appeals portion

In the appeals portion, Coordinators show off their Pokémon's moves in order to impress the judges and the audience. The appeals are awarded points by the competition jury, and the Coordinators with the highest scores proceed to the next round.

In the appeals stage of Kanto and Hoenn Grand Festivals, there are two rounds to appeal. In the first, Coordinators have their Pokémon performing with no more than one move, while in the second, Coordinators have their Pokémon using as many moves as necessary. Contrasting this, the Sinnoh Grand Festival only has one appeals round instead of two. The competition is held under the Double Performance rule, which means that Coordinators must use two Pokémon in all rounds.

In all Grand Festivals, only the best 32 Coordinators proceed to the battle portion.

Battle portion

In the battle portion, Coordinators shows how skilled they and their Pokémon are when put into battle. All battles follow the Double Battle style. Competing Coordinators are matched-up randomly by computer up to the semifinals, which is the last round that computer will choose a random match-up. Whoever loses is out of the tournament. The Coordinator who wins the fifth and final round of this portion is then declared the winner of the entire competition.

Top Coordinator

A Top Coordinator (Japanese: トップコーディネーター Top Coordinator) is the highest known level of rank for a Pokémon Coordinator. The title is bestowed upon Coordinators who have won a Grand Festival. The following is a list of individuals who are Top Coordinators:
