Glalie (Japanese: オニゴーリ Onigohri) is an Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It evolves from Snorunt starting at level 42. It is one of Snorunt's two final forms, the other being Froslass.

Biology

Physiology

Glalie is a round Pokémon with what appears to be black skin. It has two large, conical horns on either side of its head and its skin is covered by ice. This ice recedes in certain places, revealing the black skin. Its eyes are an icy blue and it also seems to have teeth much like a blue whale's baleen plates. It also partly resembles a soccer ball.

Gender differences

Glalie has none, but is said to be technically the male evolution of Snorunt, because of the debut of Froslass, Snorunt's other evolution. However, there can still be female Glalie.

Special abilities

Glalie's abilities are similar to those of its pre-evolution, only stronger. In fact, Glalie's icy powers are now strong enough to wield Sheer Cold. Other new moves include Dark Pulse, Earthquake, Gyro Ball and Explosion. Since Glalie is a fully evolved Pokémon, it can learn Hyper Beam and Giga Impact.

Behavior

Glalie tends to be mischievous. They can block paths in order to trap travelers that dwell into mountain tops or caves. Despite its physical disposition, Glalie are very loyal Pokémon. They are often misjudged by their unfriendly appearance.

Glalie in the anime

Habitat

Glalie live in deep cold caves and sometimes high atop mountain caps hidden within dark crooks of mountains. They have also been found to sleep withing large Ice fissures created by moving glaciers.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Glalie is a predatory Pokémon. It captures its prey by literally freezing them in their tracks. They also may feed on the Babiri Berry.

In the anime

Ash's Snorunt evolved into Glalie in Rhapsody in Drew. It only stayed during Hoenn League. It is now at Professor Oak's lab.

A Glalie belonging to a poacher appeared in The Drifting Snorunt.

Pokédex entries

Episode Pokémon Source Entry
AG123 Glalie Ash's Pokédex Glalie, the Face Pokémon. Glalie has a tempered ice body that doesn't melt even under a direct flame. It can freeze vapors in the air instantly.
This concludes the entries from the Advanced Generation series.
Episode Pokémon Source Entry
DP116 Glalie Dawn's Pokédex Glalie, the Face Pokémon and an evolved form of Snorunt. Glalie protects itself by creating ice armor from airborne moisture.
This concludes the entries from the Diamond & Pearl series.

In the manga

Noland is seen picking a Glalie as one of his rental Pokémon in his battle against Emerald. Although it came close to winning by delivering a would-be-fatal Sheer Cold that succeeded in hitting its target, Emerald's Sceptile was in fact not meant to be a rental Pokémon and survived due to its higher level. It eventually lost to Sceptile's Iron Tail, and Noland then yields his Frontier Symbol of Knowledge as a result.

Trivia

  • Despite being described as having a body made of rock, it is not of the Template:Type2.
  • Glalie has been clearly seen levitating in the anime and yet it cannot have the ability, Levitate.
  • Glalie is one of only four pure Template:Type2 Pokémon, along with Snorunt, Regice, and Glaceon.
    • It is also the only pure Ice-type evolved from another pure Ice-type, as Regice is not part of an evolutionary line, and Glaceon evolves from the Template:Type2 Eevee.
  • Glalie has been thought to have the Template:Type2 as its second type, mainly because of its menacing look and the fact that it learns Bite and Crunch via level up.
  • Glalie shares the exact same base stats with Phione.

Origin

Similar to Jynx, Glalie is based on human features, most likely on a cold, distant person or facial expression. It also looks somewhat similar to an ice hockey mask. Also due to its horns and teeth, it may be based on a standard Oni or possibly even a ball of frozen rice, as it Japanese name suggests

Name origin

Glalie's name is likely a combination of glacier and goalie.

Onigohri is a combination of 鬼 oni, demon, and 氷 kōri, ice. The "gohri" portion of the name also bears a strong similarity to the English word "goalie" and the Japanese spelling of it. The full name may be a pun on onigiri, which it slightly resembles.

In other languages

  • German: Firnontor - Based on firn.
  • French: Oniglali - Combination of onigiri and glace (ice).
  • Korean: 얼음귀신 Eol'eumgwisin - Literally "ice ghost".
  • Chinese (Taiwan): 冰鬼護 Bīng Guǐ Hù - The characters 冰 (ice) and 鬼 (ghost) comes from its Japanese name. 護 (to protect) may refer to its shape as an ice hockey mask.
