Gary Oak (Japanese: オーキド シゲル Shigeru Ōkido) is the prime rival of Ash, and grandson of Professor Oak. In both the anime and the games, he starts out as a snot-nosed brat, but in the anime, he eventually up matures and becomes a Pokémon researcher like his grandfather. He is voiced in Japanese by 小林優子 Yūko Kobayashi, and in English by Matt Mitler.
His Japanese name is derived from Shigeru Miyamoto, who is sometimes seen as a rival of Satoshi Tajiri.
