Gary Oak (Japanese: シゲル Shigeru) is the prime rival of Ash, and grandson of Professor Oak. In both the anime and the games, he starts out as a snot-nosed brat, but in the anime, he winds up maturing and becoming a Pokémon researcher like his grandfather. His Japanese voice is 小林優子 Yūko Kobayashi, and his English voice is Matt Mitler.
His Japanese name is derived from Shigeru Miyamoto, who is sometimes seen as a rival of Satoshi Tajiri.
