Gary's Arcanine (Japanese: シゲルのウインディ Shigeru's Windie) was a Pokémon obtained by Gary during his journey in Kanto.

History

Kanto

Gary and Arcanine

Arcanine's first appearance was in the Viridian City Gym, in the episode The Battle of the Badge. Gary sent it out to battle Giovanni's Kingler. Despite a type disadvantage, Arcanine came out on top and defeated the Water-type. However, both his Arcanine and Nidoking were defeated by Mewtwo, leaving Gary confused as to both why he lost and what Pokémon he had just battled.

This battle is seen again briefly from Mewtwo's perspective in Mewtwo Strikes Back.

Johto

Arcanine next appearance was in Extreme Pokémon!, where he used it to compete in the Extreme Pokémon Race. Ash initially thought Gary was mistreating the Pokémon, but after learning that it wasn't hurt, he competed as well. Ash decides to compete with his Bayleef, which proved a good choice. During the competition, Team Rocket tries to catch Arcanine. They failed however, thanks to Ash's intervention and after defeating the trio with the help of Gary, both decide to continue the competition where Ash defeats Gary with great effort in his first victory over his great rival.

Arcanine also appears as a Pokémon displayed in Gary's profile when Ash researched about Gary in The Ties That Bind!.

Arcanine made another appearance in Can't Beat the Heat! during the Silver Conference against Ash's Snorlax, Gary uses it during the beginning of the second half of the battle after having used Blastoise in the previous round of battles. Although it dodged Snorlax's Body Slam, despite Gary's efforts, Arcanine's Take Down and Fire Spin had minimal effect on Snorlax, who knocked it out with Hyper Beam.

After he decided to become a Pokémon Researcher, Gary left his Arcanine along with most of his other Pokémon (excluding Blastoise) with his grandfather.

Personality and characteristics

Arcanine is one of the strongest Pokémon in Gary's team. In his first appearance, he was strong enough to beat an opponent with a type advantage in only three blows. He was fast enough to put Gary in a comfortable position in the Extreme Pokémon Race even with the many unforeseen events that occurred during the race's duration. Gary appears to have enough confidence in Arcanine, that he even kissed his Poké Ball before sending it into battle.

Gary's Arcanine in the manga

Gary also owns Arcanine in The Electric Tale of Pikachu. It appears to be his main Pokémon in manga.

He is first shown in the chapter Ash vs. Gary where Gary uses it to try to capture a giant Slowpoke. When the Slowpoke was taken away by some mysterious people, he sends it out to search for the people responsible for stealing the Slowpoke. It was able to find them at the same time Ash did. It was stopped by Team Rocket's transforming machines when Meowth sprayed water. despite his efforts Arcanine has had little success in battle. Arcanine continued the search for Team Rocket afterwards. Unlike the last time, Arcanine was able to get to Team Rocket before Ash arrived. Pikachu was able to find the giant Slowpoke and they find out that this Slowpoke can hypnotize people. Gary has Arcanine battle it to prevent it from hypnotizing people but it had very little success in doing so as Arcanine was stopped by a Disable and was frozen by Ice Beam. Afterwards, it becomes hypnotized along with Gary's other Pokémon.

Arcanine also appears in the following chapter Epilogue: Wild Type alongside to Ash's Pikachu.
