Friendship (Japanese: なつき度 degree of emotional attachment), also referred to as tame in Pokémon Stadium 2 and commonly referred to by fans as happiness, is a measurement of how much a Pokémon is attached to its Trainer and enjoys being in their care.

Friendship (Japanese: なつき度 degree of emotional attachment), also referred to as tame in Pokémon Stadium 2 and friendliness in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, as well as commonly referred to by fans as happiness, is a measurement of how much a Pokémon is attached to its Trainer and enjoys being in their care.

It also affects the evolution of Pokémon that evolve by friendship, the power of Return and Frustration, and the availability of a few in-game items and Ribbons. Certain events increase a Pokémon's friendship (gaining a level, walking a certain amount of steps) or decrease it (fainting, using herbal medicine).

A prototype of the friendship system used by future games was introduced in Yellow, the last core series game of Generation I. Like the later system, its value ranged between 0 and 255, inclusive, but this value was only applied to the Red's Pikachu the player starter.
A prototype of the friendship system used by future games was introduced in Yellow, the last core series game of Generation I. Like the later system, its value ranged between 0 and 255, inclusive, but this value was only applied to the Red's Pikachu the player starter or a Pikachu with the same OT and Trainer ID as the player (i.e. any Pikachu that follows the player).

Unlike in every game released afterwards (save for HeartGold and SoulSilver), since Pikachu is outside of its Poké Ball, the player can interact with it at any time as it follows him around the overworld. Pikachu will then indicate its friendship in a small window that appears. At maximum friendship, Pikachu will jump up and down before the window is triggered.
Pikachu starts with a base friendship of 90. This is written to the memory as soon as the player begins a new game, even before they obtain his/her Pikachu.

Like in every generation after II, Pikachu's friendship will rise when it gains a level or when its Trainer uses a Potion on it, and it will drop if it faints, however its friendship also drops if it is deposited in the Pokémon Storage System, a feature not used in future games. Trading it to another game will reset its friendship to its base value.

Pikachu will then indicate its friendship in a small window that appears. At maximum friendship, Pikachu will jump up and down before the window is triggered. There are five special Pikachu emotes ('wink', 'fishing', 'puzzled', 'refusal' and 'thunder') that will appear when certain events are met; they are not affected by friendship. For example, interacting with Pikachu immediately after fishing will result in the fishing emote, where Pikachu will show its head after hiding it in a bucket.

Trading it to another game will also affect its friendship.

Friendship is not recorded for any other Pokémon in Generation I, and the friendship of Pikachu does not affect the gameplay significantly: the only real effect it has is whether or not Melanie will give Bulbasaur away in Cerulean City, which she will only do if Pikachu's friendship has a value of 147 or higher.

Items other than TMs and HMs will cause Red's Pikachu's friendship to increase even if they do not have any effect and are not consumed. For example, attempting to use a Potion when Pikachu has full HP or is fainted will still increase its friendship. This was fixed in Generation II.
Another likely glitch is the fact that Full Heal does not increase Pikachu's friendship, but other status condition healing items do.

Friendship in Generation III works similarly to Generation II but with two additional mechanics to boost it. If a Pokémon is caught in a Luxury or is holding a Out-of-battle effect item, all friendship-raising events will increase the Pokémon's friendship value by an extra point; friendship-lowering events are not affected. These effects stack on each other, meaning a Pokémon in a Luxury Ball holding a Soothe Bell increases the value by two points.

In FireRed and LeafGreen, the player can verify the friendship value of his/her Pokémon through the scene which appears after the player uses an item on the Pokémon. The Pokémon will either move towards the screen or not move at all. If the Pokémon does not move, then its friendship value is standard. The friendship value of the Pokémon can be checked by looking at how near the Pokémon goes to the player. The nearer the Pokémon moves towards the screen, the higher its friendship value and the more it is attached to its Trainer. After grooming a Pokémon, Daisy will also tell the player how friendly the Pokémon in the first slot of their party is towards them.

In Generation VI, friendship is not to be confused with Pokémon-Amie's affection. Affection is an entirely separate stat having no bearing on friendship, and no actions taken in Pokémon-Amie will affect friendship in any way.
In Generation VI, friendship is not to be confused with Pokémon-Amie's affection. Affection is an entirely separate stat having no bearing on friendship, and no actions taken in Pokémon-Amie will affect friendship in any way.
Unlike in previous generations where a Pokémon's friendship was reset to 70 when traded or transferred to another game, in Generation VI it is reset to the base friendship for its species. Friendship is also stored in a Pokémon's memories for both the Original Trainer and current handler, and if the Pokémon is returned to its Original Trainer, its friendship is reset to what it was the last time it was in the Original Trainer's possession.

If a Pokémon is caught in a Luxury, some friendship-raising events will increase the Pokémon's friendship value by an extra point. If the Pokémon's friendship is increased at the location of where it was met, an extra +1 friendship is added to the boost. These effects stack on each other, meaning a Pokémon in a Luxury Ball increasing its friendship at the location of where it was met may increase the value with two extra points.

The friendship statistics appear to have not changed much since Generation V. In the table below, the first and second values separated by slashes show the changes for most Poké Balls and Luxurys, respectively. Note that holding a Soothe Bell will still apply a rounded-down multiplier of 1.5 after applying the extra bonus from location and Luxury Ball, if applicable.

The Soothing Bag boost is not affected by location, being inside of a Luxury Ball or holding a Soothe Bell.

Still needs research overall, especially regarding values.

Friendship (Japanese: なつき degree of emotional attachment), also referred to as tame in Pokémon Stadium 2 and friendliness in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, as well as commonly referred to by fans as happiness, is a measurement of how much a Pokémon is attached to its Trainer and enjoys being in their care.

It affects the evolution of certain Pokémon, the power of Return and Frustration, and the availability of a few in-game items and Ribbons. Certain events increase a Pokémon's friendship (gaining a level, walking a certain amount of steps) or decrease it (fainting, using herbal medicine).

Friendship was introduced in Pokémon Yellow for the player's starter Pikachu only, and expanded to cover all Pokémon in Generation II.

In the core series games

Generation I

Pikachu with high friendship

A prototype of the friendship system used by future games was introduced in Pokémon Yellow, the last core series game of Generation I. Like the later system, its value ranged between 0 and 255, inclusive, but this value was only applied to the Pikachu the player started with or a Pikachu with the same OT and Trainer ID as the player (i.e. any Pikachu that follows the player).

Pikachu starts with a base friendship of 90. This is written to the memory as soon as the player begins a new game, even before they obtain his/her Pikachu.

Unlike every game released afterwards (save for Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver), since Pikachu follows the player around in the overworld, the player can interact with it at any time.

Like in every generation after II, Pikachu's friendship will rise when it gains a level or when its Trainer uses a healing item on it, and it will drop if it faints, but its friendship also drops if it is deposited in the Pokémon Storage System, a feature not used in future games. Trading it to another game will also affect its friendship.

Friendship is not recorded for any other Pokémon in Generation I, and the friendship of Pikachu does not affect the gameplay significantly: the only real effect it has is whether or not a girl will give Bulbasaur away in Cerulean City, which she will only do if Pikachu's friendship has a value of 147 or higher.

Items other than TMs and HMs will cause Pikachu's friendship to increase even if they do not have any effect and are not consumed. For example, attempting to use a Potion when Pikachu has full HP or is fainted will still increase its friendship. This was fixed in Generation II.

Another likely glitch is the fact that Full Heal does not increase Pikachu's friendship, but other status condition healing items do.

Generation II

In Generation II, the friendship system was overhauled and expanded, building on the system used in Pokémon Yellow by tracking the friendship of every Pokémon owned by the Trainer. Like before, it is a single byte with a value between 0 and 255.

Friendship is set when a Pokémon is brought under a Trainer's control; i.e., it has a value of 70 when a Pokémon is captured from the wild, and reset to 70 when a Pokémon is traded from another game. When a Pokémon is hatched from an Egg, its value is set to 120. If a Pokémon is captured in a Friend Ball, rather than any other kind of Poké Ball, its friendship is set to a value of 200 instead.

Another mechanic of friendship introduced in Generation II is that it affects the evolution of certain Pokémon, which has continued until the present as most generations introduce new Pokémon which evolve through friendship. Friendship-based evolutions occur when a Pokémon's friendship has a value of 220 or higher.

Its value for a specific Pokémon can be checked using the friendship checker in Goldenrod City.

Generation III

050Diglett.png This section is incomplete.
Please feel free to edit this section to add missing information and complete it.
Reason: The number of steps and the probability needs further research.

Friendship in Generation III works similarly to Generation II but with two additional mechanics to boost it. If a Pokémon is caught in a Luxury Ball or is holding a Soothe Bell, all friendship-raising events will increase the Pokémon's friendship value by an extra point; friendship-lowering events are not affected. These effects stack on each other, meaning a Pokémon in a Luxury Ball holding a Soothe Bell increases the value by two points.

Pokémon now have a base friendship per species, although most catchable Pokémon have the standard value of 70 as their starting level.

In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, the player can verify the friendship value of his/her Pokémon through the scene which appears after the player uses an item on the Pokémon.

The Pokétch's Friendship Checker app with a Drifblim at maximum friendship.

The friendship system remains essentially similar to Generation III, though the conditions are altered slightly. The Luxury Ball now causes a Pokémon to gain a separate boost in friendship when they level up and while walking compared to Pokémon in other Poké Balls.

In Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, Dr. Footstep, the sole resident of the Footstep House on Route 213, will give a Pokémon with maximum friendship a Ribbon.

In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the player can gauge their Pokémon's friendship based on the phrase that appears when they are interacted with outside of their Poké Ball. Daisy also makes a return and visiting her in Pallet Town will let her groom one of the player's Pokémon between 15:00 and 16:00 every day, increasing its friendship. The haircut brothers will also boost a Pokémon's friendship and they can be visited on any day of the week besides Monday.

In the table below, the first and second values separated by slashes show the changes for most Poké Balls and Luxury Balls, respectively. Note that holding a Soothe Bell will apply a rounded-down multiplier of 1.5 to only positive changes and that use of Luxury Balls will not reduce the effects of negative changes.

Generation V

The friendship system is very similar to Generation IV. As far as it has been tested, friendship conditions and related items are much the same, with the main differences being in how NPCs will rate and measure friendship.

A woman in Nacrene City and another woman in the Icirrus Pokémon Fan Club will rate the friendship of the player's Pokémon, and Bianca can rate friendship in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 if called on the Xtransceiver.

Another woman in Castelia City will massage one of the player's Pokémon per day, raising its friendship. In Pokémon Black and White, she is located on Castelia Street, in the building across the street from the Game Freak headquarters. In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, she is located at the Medal Office across from the Castelia Gym.

The friendship statistics appear to have not changed much since Generation IV. Note that holding a Soothe Bell will still apply a rounded-down multiplier of 1.5 to only positive changes and that use of Luxury Balls will not reduce the effects of negative changes.

If the Pokémon's friendship is increased at the location of where it was met, an extra +1 friendship is added to the boost.

Generation VI

050Diglett.png This section is incomplete.
Please feel free to edit this section to add missing information and complete it.
Reason: Check if PokéBlocks add friendship. Check which are affected by Luxury Ball; fill in remaining Juice Shoppe values; determine/verify probabilities for walking and massages; figure out what Befriending Power does to all of these

If a Pokémon is caught in a Luxury Ball, some friendship-raising events will increase the Pokémon's friendship value by an extra point.

In the table below, the first and second values separated by slashes show the changes for most Poké Balls and Luxury Balls, respectively.

Stadium 2

While there is no NPC that rates friendship, when viewing a table with Pokémon, its value is listed there (along other elements such as type, Trainer ID number or item), in levels. Pokémon data read from a Generation I game will always be rated as Not quite, even for Red's Pikachu in Pokémon Yellow, which does have its friendship tracked.

XD: Gale of Darkness

The friendship rater is located inside the Krabby Club in Gateon Port. He is upstairs, straight to the rear of the club (not the ones backstage) and standing near the bartender. He looks like a boat captain and is possibly the same man that gives the player the item to evolve their Eevee at the beginning of the game. He is not there at that point but is present after starting the events in Pyrite Town.

Misconceptions

Although frequently reported to the contrary, the following factors do not affect friendship (note that these are focused on the system that has been in place since Generation II):

In spin-off games

Mystery Dungeon series

Main article: IQ

In the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series, IQ is used in place of friendship.

Ranger: Shadows of Almia

Two Pokémon in a Happy Mood

Friendship also has an effect in the second game of the Pokémon Ranger series. Partner Pokémon can have the condition of Fine, Happy, or Very Happy. When it is in a Happy Mood, black musical notes appear to come out of it. Multicolored musical notes come out when it is Very Happy. This may happen whether or not it is with the player. This state of mind increases the speed the Partner Gauge fills up due to more Partner Energy being provided.
