In the core series games
Friendship is distinct from affection, a separate mechanic used in Generation VI and some Generation VII games. However, beginning with Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, friendship effectively replaced affection, taking on its effects.
Generation I
A prototype of the friendship system used by future games was introduced in Yellow, the last core series game of Generation I. Like the later system, its value ranged between 0 and 255, inclusive, but this value was only applied to the Red's Pikachu the player starter or a Pikachu with the same OT and Trainer ID as the player (i.e. any Pikachu that follows the player).

Pikachu starts with a base friendship of 90. This is written to the memory as soon as the player begins a new game, even before they obtain his/her Pikachu.
Terminology
section
Friendship was also referred to as loyalty in the English Generation II core games and friendliness in English XD: Gale of Darkness. In the English versions of Yellow and Stadium 2, the mechanic is presented to the player in the context of how tamed a Pokémon is.

Unlike every game released afterwards (save for HeartGold and SoulSilver), since Pikachu follows the player around in the overworld, the player can interact with it at any time. Pikachu will then indicate its friendship in a small window that appears. At maximum friendship, Pikachu will jump up and down before the window is triggered. There are five special Pikachu emotes ('wink', 'fishing', 'puzzled', 'refusal' and 'thunder') that will appear when certain events are met; they are not affected by friendship. For example, interacting with Pikachu immediately after fishing will result in the fishing emote, where Pikachu will show its head after hiding it in a bucket.
In Pokémon Gold and Silver: Complete Pokédex (page 19), this is called friendliness.

Like in every generation after II, Pikachu's friendship will rise when it gains a level or when its Trainer uses a Potion on it, and it will drop if it faints, but its friendship also drops if it is deposited in the Pokémon Storage System, a feature not used in future games. Trading it to another game will also affect its friendship.
General mechanics
A Pokémon's friendship value ranges from 0 to 255 (stored as a single byte), and since Generation III, each Pokémon has a base friendship value. This base value applies when a wild Pokémon is caught with most kinds of Poké Balls and in most cases when a Pokémon is traded. As of Generation IX, there are two exceptions for caught or traded Pokémon:
* A wild Pokémon caught in a Friend Ball starts with 200 friendship, regardless of its base friendship; and
* A Pokémon traded back to its original Trainer regains the friendship it had before being traded away (Generation VI or later).

Friendship is not recorded for any other Pokémon in Generation I, and the friendship of Pikachu does not affect the gameplay significantly: the only real effect it has is whether or not Melanie will give Bulbasaur away in Cerulean City, which she will only do if Pikachu's friendship has a value of 147 or higher.
Additionally, a Pokémon hatched from an Egg starts with 120 friendship.

Items other than TMs and HMs will cause Red's Pikachu's friendship to increase even if they do not have any effect and are not consumed. For example, attempting to use a Potion when Pikachu has full HP or is fainted will still increase its friendship. This was fixed in Generation II.
Evaluating friendship
In Yellow, the Red's Pikachu's friendship can be evaluated directly by talking to it, and similar direct evaluation mechanics exist in many recent core series games.

Another likely glitch is the fact that Full Heal does not increase Pikachu's friendship, but other status condition healing items do.
Friendship rater locations
Certain NPCs in the core games will also evaluate the friendship of the first Pokémon in the player's party, as will certain game features in some generations:

Raising and lowering friendship
Friendship is generally increased by taking good care of a Pokémon. Keeping a Pokémon in the player's party, raising it, using items on it, and getting it groomed will typically increase a Pokémon's friendship. Letting a Pokémon faint and using bitter herbal medicines on it will decrease a Pokémon's friendship.

Certain items and conditions (described below) apply additional bonuses to friendship increases. These bonuses do not apply to when friendship is not increased (e.g., using an X Attack on a Pokémon with high friendship).

Generation II
Luxury Ball
In Generation II, the friendship system was overhauled and expanded, building on the system used in Yellow by tracking the friendship of every Pokémon owned by the Trainer. Like before, it is a single byte with a value between 0 and 255.
From Generation III onward, if a Pokémon was caught in a Luxury Ball, any increase to its friendship is boosted by 1.

Friendship is set when a Pokémon is brought under a Trainer's control; i.e., it has a value of 70 when a Pokémon is captured from the wild, and reset to 70 when a Pokémon is traded from another game. When a Pokémon is hatched from an Egg, its value is set to 120. If a Pokémon is captured in a Friend, rather than any other kind of Poké Ball, its friendship is set to a value of 200 instead.
Met location
Activities and events that increase a Pokémon's friendship are more effective in the location where that Pokémon was first encountered (e.g., where it was caught). This effect exists in Crystal, Generation III, and all games from Generation V onward.

Another mechanic of friendship introduced in Generation II is that it affects the evolution of Pokémon that evolve by friendship, which has continued until the present as most generations introduce new Pokémon which evolve through friendship. Friendship-based evolutions occur when a Pokémon's friendship has a value of 220 or higher.
In Crystal, a Pokémon leveled up at its met location gains twice as much friendship. However, only Pokémon caught in Crystal record a met location, and Pokémon traded to a Generation I game have their met location permanently erased.

Its value for a specific Pokémon can be checked using the Goldenrod City in Goldenrod City.
In Generation III onward (except in Generation IV), if a Pokémon is currently at its met location, any increase to its friendship is boosted by 1. This does not apply in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.

{| cellpadding="3" style="background: #cute color; border: 3px solid #cute color dark; 10px"
Soothe Bell
|- style="text-align: center;"
If a Pokémon is holding a Soothe Bell, increases to its friendship are boosted by 50% of the change. In Generation III, the increase is applied to the original change in friendship; in subsequent generations, it applies to the friendship change after including Luxury Ball and met location bonuses.

Generation III
Effects of friendship
Starting in Generation II, there are Pokémon that evolve by friendship. Additionally, certain moves vary in power depending on the user's friendship.
Friendship in Generation III works similarly to Generation II but with two additional mechanics to boost it. If a Pokémon is caught in a Luxury or is holding a Out-of-battle effect item, all friendship-raising events will increase the Pokémon's friendship value by an extra point; friendship-lowering events are not affected. These effects stack on each other, meaning a Pokémon in a Luxury Ball holding a Soothe Bell increases the value by two points.

Pokémon now have a base friendship per species, although most caught have the standard value of 70 as their starting level.
In Generation IV and since Generation VIII, certain ribbons are awarded to Pokémon with the maximum (255) friendship value.

In FireRed and LeafGreen, the player can verify the friendship value of his/her Pokémon through the scene which appears after the player uses an item on the Pokémon. The Pokémon will either move towards the screen or not move at all. If the Pokémon does not move, then its friendship value is standard. The friendship value of the Pokémon can be checked by looking at how near the Pokémon goes to the player. The nearer the Pokémon moves towards the screen, the higher its friendship value and the more it is attached to its Trainer. After grooming a Pokémon, Daisy will also tell the player how friendly the Pokémon in the first slot of their party is towards them.
Some NPCs also only give gifts or teach moves when the player's Pokémon has a certain amount of friendship. Specifically, a Pokémon must have maximized friendship to learn Draco Meteor, Frenzy Plant, Blast Burn, Hydro Cannon, Grass Pledge, Fire Pledge, or Water Pledge in any generation.

Generation IV
In-battle bonuses
Beginning in Generation VII, friendship can have in-battle effects that used to depend on affection. These effects, which vary by game, include surviving a hit that would normally knock it out, boosted experience, and recovering from status conditions.
The friendship system remains essentially similar to Generation III, though the conditions are altered slightly. The Luxury now causes a Pokémon to gain a separate boost in friendship when they level up and while walking compared to Pokémon in other Poké Balls.

In Diamond, Dr. Footstep, the sole resident of the Footstep House on 213, will give a Pokémon with maximum friendship a Ribbon.

In HeartGold and SoulSilver, the player can gauge their Pokémon's friendship based on the phrase that appears when they are interacted with outside of their Poké Ball. Daisy also makes a return and visiting her in Pallet Town will let her groom one of the player's Pokémon between 15:00 and 16:00 every day, increasing its friendship. The haircut brothers will also boost a Pokémon's friendship and they can be visited on any Days of the week besides Days of the week.
Evolutions based on friendship
Friendship evolution

In the table below, the first and second values separated by slashes show the changes for most Poké Balls and Luxurys, respectively. Note that holding a Out-of-battle effect item will apply a rounded-down multiplier of 1.5 to only positive changes and that use of Luxury Balls will not reduce the effects of negative changes.
From Generation II onwards, several Pokémon evolve when they level up while having a high friendship. These Pokémon evolve when they have at least 220 friendship from Generations II to VII, or 160 friendship from Generation VIII onwards.

* Depositing a Pokémon in the Pokémon Storage System (except it loses some friendship in Yellow, and the friendship resets in the Stadium games)
* Letting a Pokémon's HP fall to critical status
* Letting a Pokémon get a status condition, or walking with a Pokémon with a status condition
* Healing a Pokémon with low HP or with a status condition
* Giving a Pokémon an item to hold that is not the Soothe Bell.
* Evolving a Pokémon without trading it
* Using a Pokémon in battle or winning a battle with it.
* Increasing affection
* Using a Scent on a Pokémon

A woman in Nacrene City and another woman in the Icirrus Pokémon Fan Club will rate the friendship of the player's Pokémon, and Bianca can rate friendship in Black and White if called on the Xtransceiver.
Generation- and game-specific mechanics
Generation I
Friendship was introduced in Yellow as a mechanic exclusively for the Red's Pikachu. Outsider Pikachu are not affected, nor are any Raichu (even if, through trade, the Raichu is an evolved initial Pikachu). However, any Pikachu whose Original Trainer is the player is treated as their initial Pikachu, and all initial Pikachu share the same friendship value. This value persists if the initial Pikachu is traded, and any change in this value applies to all initial Pikachu.

Another woman in Castelia City will massage one of the player's Pokémon per day, raising its friendship. In Black and White, she is located on Castelia City, in the building across the street from the Game Freak headquarters. In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, she is located at the Castelia City across from the Castelia Gym.
When in the party and not fainted, the initial Pikachu (or first initial Pikachu in the party) follows the player in the overworld, and interacting with Pikachu brings up a pop-up window showing Pikachu's face. Apart from certain special events that cause special reactions, Pikachu's expression changes based on its current friendship. At maximum friendship, Pikachu jumps up and down before the window appears.

The friendship statistics appear to have not changed much since Generation IV. Note that holding a Out-of-battle effect item will still apply a rounded-down multiplier of 1.5 to only positive changes and that use of Luxurys will not reduce the effects of negative changes.
Effects
In Cerulean City, Melanie gives the player a Bulbasaur if the initial Pikachu's friendship at least 147. Melanie will give the player this Bulbasaur even if the initial Pikachu is not in the party or even in the game. Additionally, a father on the upper floor of the Pewter Museum will acknowledge Pikachu's friendship.

If the Pokémon's friendship is increased at the location of where it was met, an extra +1 friendship is added to the boost.
Modification
Various actions can change Pikachu's friendship level:

Generation VI
Vitamins, battle items, and HP-restoring items increase Pikachu's friendship even if they would have no effect (e.g., attempting to use a Potion on a Pikachu that is fainted or has full health). Using an item in this way does not consume it, so the same item can repeatedly increase Pikachu's friendship.

In Generation VI, friendship is not to be confused with Pokémon-Amie's affection. Affection is an entirely separate stat having no bearing on friendship, and no actions taken in Pokémon-Amie will affect friendship in any way.

If a Pokémon is caught in a Luxury, some friendship-raising events will increase the Pokémon's friendship value by an extra point. If the Pokémon's friendship is increased at the location of where it was met, an extra +1 friendship is added to the boost. These effects stack on each other, meaning a Pokémon in a Luxury Ball increasing its friendship at the location of where it was met may increase the value with two extra points.
Waking Pikachu with the Poké Flute (either in or out of battle) does not change its friendship.

The friendship statistics appear to have not changed much since Generation V. In the table below, the first and second values separated by slashes show the changes for most Poké Balls and Luxurys, respectively. Note that holding a Soothe Bell will still apply a rounded-down multiplier of 1.5 after applying the extra bonus from location and Luxury Ball, if applicable.
Evaluation
In Yellow, the friendship rater is a woman in Celadon Mansion. She will comment on the initial Pikachu's friendship if it is following the player:

The Soothing Bag boost is not affected by location, being inside of a Luxury Ball or holding a Soothe Bell.

Evolutions
Generation II
Several Pokémon evolve after being leveled up when their friendship value is at least 220.
In Generation II, friendship was expanded to apply to all Pokémon. All Pokémon have a base friendship of 70, but any Pokémon caught in a Friend Ball starts with 200 friendship, and any Pokémon hatched from an Egg starts with 120 friendship.

The Johto and Hoenn raters in the Goldenrod Department Store and Pacifidlog Town will give out 21 or 27 (or neither) depending on the friendship of the player's lead Pokémon.

In Crystal, if a Pokémon is leveled up at its met location, it will gain twice as much friendship from that level up as usual. Since only Pokémon caught in Pokémon Crystal have a defined met location, Pokémon caught in the Generation I games, Gold and Silver, and Pokémon from in-game trades will not receive this bonus. If a Pokémon that has a defined met location is traded to a Generation I game, this data is permanently erased, so it can no longer receive this bonus.

Gold, Silver, and Crystal
In Gold, the friendship rater can be found in Goldenrod City, in a house near the Goldenrod Department Store. Additionally, on Sundays, a friendship rater can be found in the Department Store itself. Both will comment on the friendship of the first Pokémon in the party:

Stadium 2
The friendship rater in the Department Store will give out 21 for Pokémon with low friendship and 27 for high friendship.
While there is no NPC that rates friendship, when viewing a table with Pokémon, its value is listed there (along other elements such as type, Trainer ID number or item), in levels. Pokémon data read from a Generation I game will always be rated as Not quite, even for Red's Pikachu in Yellow, which does have its friendship tracked.

Generation III
In Generation III, each Pokémon was assigned a specific base friendship value. The Luxury Ball and Soothe Bell boosts were also introduced.

Modification
XD: Gale of Darkness
In addition, how much a Pokémon moves towards the screen after an item is used on it also indicates its friendship.
The friendship rater is located inside the Krabby Club in Gateon Port. He is upstairs, straight to the rear of the club (not the ones backstage) and standing near the bartender. He looks like a boat captain and is possibly the same man that gives the player the item to evolve their Eevee at the beginning of the game. He is not there at that point but is present after starting the events in Pyrite Town.

In the Water Labyrinth on the Sevii Islands, a Gentlemen will give the player a Togepi Egg if the first Pokémon in their party has maximum friendship.

Generation IV
Unlike the previous generation, a Pokémon's met location does not affect the amount of friendship it gains.

The met location friendship boost introduced in Generation III returned. ===Misconceptions===
Effects
Although frequently reported to the contrary, the following factors do not affect friendship (note that these are focused on the system that has been in place since Generation II):
In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Nameless Cavern becomes unlocked once the player has three Pokémon with maximum friendship on their team.
* Depositing a Pokémon in the Pokémon Storage System

* Healing a Pokémon with low HP or with a status condition
In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the friendship rater in Pacifidlog Town will give out 21 for Pokémon with low friendship and 27 for high friendship.
* Giving a Pokémon an item to hold (except the Soothe Bell)

* Evolving a Pokémon, regardless of method (level up, held item, or evolutionary stone, with the exception of trade evolutions, which reset the Pokémon's friendship)
Generation VII
* Using a Pokémon in battle
Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon
* Winning battles with a Pokémon

* Letting a Pokémon's HP fall to critical status
section
* Letting the player's Pokémon get a status condition like paralysis
Friendship boosts do not apply to massages.
* Walking when the player's Pokémon has a status condition

* Affection in Pokémon-Amie

Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!
section
In Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, friendship is factored into all of a Pokémon's stats, except HP. At maximum friendship, a Pokémon will receive a 10% boost to its stats, before AVs are added in. The friendship multiplier scales directly with the level of friendship, starting from a 0% boost at 0 friendship to receiving the full 10% at 255.

In Sword and Shield, friendship can only be increased to a certain cap without using Pokémon Camp or Berries. ** Breaking up fights involving the Pokémon by calling it over to you.
** Cooking curry with the Pokémon, especially when using lots of rare Berries.

In the anime, the bond between Trainers and their Pokémon has been a theme since the first episode, in which Ash had trouble to form a friendship with his newly obtained Pikachu. After risking his safety to protect Pikachu from a flock of angry Spearow, he had earned Pikachu's trust, and the two have been inseparable ever since.

Pokémon that have friendly relationships with their Trainers are said to perform better in battles. Ash believes that befriending a Pokémon will make it grow stronger, and he treats Ash's Pokémon with utmost care and respect. However, throughout the series, some Trainers have been shown to focus on raw strength alone, disregarding their Pokémon's feelings and well being. Examples include Paul and Cross.

Aside from regular battles, friendship is valued in Pokémon Contests, since the level of cooperation between Coordinator and Pokémon is observed by the panel of judges during the Performance Stage. Additionally, in the Battle Stage, Coordinators are expected to be in synchronicity with their Pokémon the entire time. In Our Cup Runneth Over!, Contest Master Wallace stressed the importance of kinship. He also said that playing with Pokémon can help Trainers and Coordinators in learning how to bring out the potential of their Pokémon. In addition to enhancing a Pokémon's appearance, groomer is said to make them happier. Trainers who devote themselves to the development of techniques that improve a Pokémon's health and happiness are known as Pokémon Breeders. Just like in the games, friendship affects the power of Frustration. This was shown in Going for Choke!, in which Harley's Banette received a boost while using the move under the command of Jessie, a Trainer it does not like. In Pokémon the Series: XY, the friendship between Ash and his Greninja triggered a temporary transformation known as Bond Phenomenon.

In contrast with the games, where a Pokémon of a certain level will only obey its Trainer if the Trainer possesses specific achievements, disobedient Pokémon in the anime will gain respect for their Trainers after realizing how far the Trainer is willing to go to befriend, protect, and care for the Pokémon.

Friendship (Japanese: なつき emotional attachment), also referred to by fans as happiness, is a measurement of how much a Pokémon is attached to its Trainer and enjoys being in their care.

In the core series games, friendship was introduced in Pokémon Yellow, though only for the initial Pikachu. It was expanded to apply to all Pokémon starting in Generation II.

Friendship affects the evolution of certain Pokémon, the power of certain moves, and the availability of a few in-game items and ribbons. Certain activities/events can increase a Pokémon's friendship (such as gaining a level and walking a certain amount of steps), while others decrease their friendship (such as fainting and using herbal medicine).

Friendship is distinct from affection, a separate mechanic used in Generation VI and some Generation VII games. However, beginning with Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, friendship effectively replaced affection, taking on its effects.

Terminology

Please feel free to edit this section to add missing information and complete it.
Reason: Other Japanese and/or English names

Friendship was also referred to as loyalty in the English Generation II core games and friendliness in English Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. In the English versions of Pokémon Yellow and Pokémon Stadium 2, the mechanic is presented to the player in the context of how tamed a Pokémon is.

In Pokémon Gold and Silver: Complete Pokédex (page 19), this is called friendliness.

  • A wild Pokémon caught in a Friend Ball starts with 200 friendship, regardless of its base friendship; and
  • A Pokémon traded back to its original Trainer regains the friendship it had before being traded away (Generation VI or later).

Additionally, a Pokémon hatched from an Egg starts with 120 friendship.

Evaluating friendship

In Pokémon Yellow, the initial Pikachu's friendship can be evaluated directly by talking to it, and similar direct evaluation mechanics exist in many recent core series games.

Friendship rater locations

Certain NPCs in the core games will also evaluate the friendship of the first Pokémon in the player's party, as will certain game features in some generations:

Raising and lowering friendship

Luxury Ball (Generation IX sprite)
Soothe Bell (Generation IX sprite)

Friendship is generally increased by taking good care of a Pokémon. Keeping a Pokémon in the player's party, raising it, using items on it, and getting it groomed will typically increase a Pokémon's friendship. Letting a Pokémon faint and using bitter herbal medicines on it will decrease a Pokémon's friendship.

Certain items and conditions (described below) apply additional bonuses to friendship increases. These bonuses do not apply to when friendship is not increased (e.g., using an X Attack on a Pokémon with high friendship).

Luxury Ball

From Generation III onward, if a Pokémon was caught in a Luxury Ball, any increase to its friendship is boosted by 1.

Met location

Activities and events that increase a Pokémon's friendship are more effective in the location where that Pokémon was first encountered (e.g., where it was caught). This effect exists in Pokémon Crystal, Generation III, and all games from Generation V onward.

In Pokémon Crystal, a Pokémon leveled up at its met location gains twice as much friendship. However, only Pokémon caught in Crystal record a met location, and Pokémon traded to a Generation I game have their met location permanently erased.

In Generation III onward (except in Generation IV), if a Pokémon is currently at its met location, any increase to its friendship is boosted by 1. This does not apply in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.

Soothe Bell

If a Pokémon is holding a Soothe Bell, increases to its friendship are boosted by 50% of the change. In Generation III, the increase is applied to the original change in friendship; in subsequent generations, it applies to the friendship change after including Luxury Ball and met location bonuses.

Effects of friendship

Starting in Generation II, there are Pokémon that evolve by friendship. Additionally, certain moves vary in power depending on the user's friendship.

In Generation IV and since Generation VIII, certain ribbons are awarded to Pokémon with the maximum (255) friendship value.

Affected moves

Friendship affects the base power of the following moves.

Move Type Category Power Accuracy Notes
Frustration Normal Physical Varies 100% The base power increases as the user's friendship decreases
Pika PapowP Electric Special Varies —% The base power increases as the user's friendship increases
Return Normal Physical Varies 100% The base power increases as the user's friendship increases
Veevee VolleyE Normal Physical Varies —% The base power increases as the user's friendship increases

In-battle bonuses

Reason: Needs more detailed information, dialogue, etc.

Beginning in Generation VII, friendship can have in-battle effects that used to depend on affection. These effects, which vary by game, include surviving a hit that would normally knock it out, boosted experience, and recovering from status conditions.

Evolutions based on friendship

Main article: Friendship evolution

From Generation II onwards, several Pokémon evolve when they level up while having a high friendship. These Pokémon evolve when they have at least 220 friendship from Generations II to VII, or 160 friendship from Generation VIII onwards.

Misconceptions

Though often thought otherwise, the following factors do not affect friendship:

Generation- and game-specific mechanics

Generation I

Pikachu with high friendship

Friendship was introduced in Pokémon Yellow as a mechanic exclusively for the initial Pikachu.

Modification

Various actions can change Pikachu's friendship level:

Event Change based on current friendship
0 to 99 100 to 199 200 to 255
Initial Pikachu levels up while in the party +5 +3 +2
Use medicine on initial Pikachu (even if unsuccessful),
other than PP Up, Full Heal, Revive, Max Revive, Ether, Max Ether, Elixer, Max Elixer
Challenge a Gym Leader with non-fainted initial Pikachu in the party
(if the player has multiple initial Pikachu, the first must not be fainted)
+3 +2 +1
Walk 255 steps with Pikachu following (50% chance) +2 +1
Teach Pikachu a TM or HM move +1 0
Use a battle item on initial Pikachu (even if unsuccessful), other than X Accuracy
initial Pikachu faints
(including during link battles)
If opponent is less than 30 levels higher -1
If opponent is at least 30 levels higher, or outside of battle -5 -10
Deposit initial Pikachu in the Pokémon Storage System from the party -3 -5
Trade Pikachu away -10 -20

Vitamins, battle items, and HP-restoring items increase Pikachu's friendship even if they would have no effect (e.g., attempting to use a Potion on a Pikachu that is fainted or has full health). Using an item in this way does not consume it, so the same item can repeatedly increase Pikachu's friendship.

Waking Pikachu with the Poké Flute (either in or out of battle) does not change its friendship.

Evaluation

In Pokémon Yellow, the friendship rater is a woman in Celadon Mansion. She will comment on the initial Pikachu's friendship if it is following the player:

Statement Friendship
"You look like a fantastic duo. You're making me jealous!" 201-255
"Your Pikachu looks happy with you." 161-200
"Your Pikachu seems tamed." 131-160
"You must be happy to have a Pokémon that cute." 101-130
"Why don't you take more care with Pikachu?" 51-100
"It seems like it hasn't been tamed at all." 0-50

Generation II

In Generation II, friendship was expanded to apply to all Pokémon. All Pokémon have a base friendship of 70, but any Pokémon caught in a Friend Ball starts with 200 friendship, and any Pokémon hatched from an Egg starts with 120 friendship.

Modification

Various actions can change a Pokémon's friendship:

Event Change based on current friendship
0 to 99 100 to 199 200 to 255
Grooming (haircut brothers)
"<Pokémon> looks [...]"
"delighted!" (younger brother: 10%) +10 +4
"delighted!" (older brother: 20%) +5 +2
"happy." (older brother: 50%, younger: 30%) +3 +1
"a little happier." (older brother: 30%, younger: 60%) +1

At met locationC +10 +6 +4
Using a vitamin[a] +5 +3 +2
Battling against a Gym Leader, Elite Four member, the Champion, or Red (whole party) +3 +2 +1
Grooming (Daisy) +3 +1
Walking 512 steps (whole party) +1

If opponent is at least 30 levels higher, or outside of battle -5 -10
Using EnergyPowder or Heal Powder -5 -10
Using Energy Root -10 -15
Using Revival Herb -15 -20

In Pokémon Crystal, if a Pokémon is leveled up at its met location, it will gain twice as much friendship from that level up as usual. Since only Pokémon caught in Pokémon Crystal have a defined met location, Pokémon caught in the Generation I games, Pokémon Gold and Silver, and Pokémon from in-game trades will not receive this bonus. If a Pokémon that has a defined met location is traded to a Generation I game, this data is permanently erased, so it can no longer receive this bonus.

Evaluation

In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, the friendship rater can be found in Goldenrod City, in a house near the Goldenrod Department Store. Additionally, on Sundays, a friendship rater can be found in the Department Store itself. Both will comment on the friendship of the first Pokémon in the party:

"It's quite cute." 100-149
"You should treat it better. It's not used to you." 50-99
"It doesn't seem to like you at all. It looks mean." 0-49
Goldenrod Department Store (Sunday only)
"It's very attached to you. This move should be perfect for a pair like you." 150-255
"It's adorable! You should teach it good TM moves." 50-149
"It looks evil. How about this TM for it?" 0-49

The friendship rater in the Department Store will give out TM21 (Frustration) for Pokémon with low friendship and TM27 (Return) for high friendship.

Generation III

In Generation III, each Pokémon was assigned a specific base friendship value. The Luxury Ball and Soothe Bell boosts were also introduced.

Fainting in battle will not alter a Pokémon's friendship if it fainted from poison at the end of a turn.

In the Generation III core series games, if a Pokémon is currently at its met location, any increase to its friendship is boosted by 1. This does not apply in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.

Evaluation

Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald

In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, there are two friendship raters; one is in a house in Verdanturf Town, and the other is in Pacifidlog Town. Both will comment on the friendship of the first Pokémon in the party:

Statement Friendship
Verdanturf Town
"It adores you. It can't possibly love you any more. I even feel happy seeing it." 255
"It seems to be very happy. It obviously likes you a whole lot." 200-254
"It likes you quite a lot. It seems to want to be babied a little." 150-199
"It's getting used to you. It seems to believe in you." 100-149
"It's not very used to you yet. It neither loves nor hates you." 50-99
"It's very wary. It has scary viciousness in its eyes. It doesn't like you much at all." 1-49
"This is a little hard for me to say… Your Pokémon simply detests you. Doesn't that make you uncomfortable?" 0
Pacifidlog Town
"It clearly likes you very much. A Pokémon that adoring and adorable deserves a TM like this, no?" 151-255
"Hmm… It's not bad, but it's also not good. You, as the Trainer, need to put in some more effort." 100-150
"It has a vicious look to it. A frightening Pokémon like that deserves a TM like this." 0-99

The friendship rater in Pacifidlog Town will give out TM21 (Frustration) for Pokémon with low friendship and TM27 (Return) for high friendship.

Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen
Main article: Daisy Oak

In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, the friendship rater is Daisy Oak in Pallet Town. She will also offer grooming to increase a Pokémon's friendship once for every 512 steps the player takes. She will comment on the friendship of the first Pokémon in the party:

Statement Friendship
"It couldn't possibly love you any more than it does now. Your Pokémon is happy beyond words." 255
"It looks very happy. I wish <rival> could see this and learn something from it." 200-254
"It's quite friendly with you. Keep being good to it!" 150-199
"It's warming up to you. Trust must be growing between you." 100-149
"It's not quite familiar with you yet. Pokémon are all quite wary when you first get them." 50-99
"<Player>, I don't like the way it glares at you. Could you try being a little nicer to it?" 1-49
"…Um, it's not easy for me to say this, but… Is there some reason why your Pokémon would hate you so much?" 0

In addition, how much a Pokémon moves towards the screen after an item is used on it also indicates its friendship.

In the Water Labyrinth on the Sevii Islands, a Gentlemen will give the player a Togepi Egg if the first Pokémon in their party has maximum friendship.

In Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, the massage at the Ribbon Syndicate is not affected by any friendship boosts, and the Soothe Bell does not affect friendship gained when using a battle item.

In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl only, due to a bug, using herbal medicine on a Pokémon with low friendship while in battle can cause its friendship to underflow to a value near the 255 maximum.[1]

The Eterna City friendship rater also gives the player the Friendship Checker app for the Pokétch.

Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver

In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the friendship rater can be found in Goldenrod City, in a house near the Goldenrod Department Store. Additionally, on Sundays, a friendship rater can be found in the Department Store itself. Both will comment on the friendship of the first Pokémon in the party:

Additionally, a walking Pokémon's reaction changes depending on its friendship.

Reason: Add friendship rater comments

In Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, friendship is factored into all of a Pokémon's stats, except HP. At maximum friendship, a Pokémon will receive a 10% boost to its stats, before AVs are added in. The friendship multiplier scales directly with the level of friendship, starting from a 0% boost at 0 friendship to receiving the full 10% at 255.

Reason: Test and update chart with thresholds and values for all friendship increasing/decreasing factors like vitamins, battle items, herbs, etc., confirm untested thresholds for camp/berries, do they actually cap at 179? Examples
Modification

In Pokémon Sword and Shield, friendship can only be increased to a certain cap without using Pokémon Camp or Berries. While this is enough to evolve Pokémon that evolve with high friendship, it is not enough to receive any in-battle friendship bonuses. Pokémon Camp and friendship-raising Berries are the only ways to reach the maximum friendship value of 255.

Various actions can change a Pokémon's friendship:

Event Change based on current friendship
0 to 99 100 to 159 160 to 179 180+
Level up +3 +2 0
Using friendship-raising Berries[c] +10 +5 +1

If opponent is at least 30 levels higher -5 -10
Walking 128 steps (for whole party, 50% chance to occur) +1 0
Walking 255 steps with walking Pokémon in Isle of Armor or Crown Tundra +1 0

The following methods can only increase Pokémon's friendship up to a maximum of 179. After 179 friendship, these methods no longer boost friendship.

The following methods can increase a Pokémon's friendship regardless of their current friendship (up to the maximum of 255).

  • Using friendship-raising Berries
  • Pokémon Camp:
    • Playing with them using toys, especially toy balls.
    • Breaking up fights involving the Pokémon by calling it over to you.
    • Cooking curry with the Pokémon, especially when using lots of rare Berries.

The following methods can decrease a Pokémon friendship (down to a minimum of 0).

  • Letting a Pokémon faint, especially when battling a much stronger opponent.
  • Using herbal medicine on it.
Effects

In these games, friendship has the following effects:

  • 20% chance of recovering from status conditions on its own
  • 10% accuracy subtracted from an opponent's move (no effect on sure-hit moves, however)
  • Increased critical hit ratio (namely, each stage's chance is doubled)

These effects do not occur in link battles, the Battle Tower, Restricted Sparring, or Max Raid Battles. In addition, Pokémon with at least 1 heart may find items after cooking together at Pokémon Camp.

Evaluation

In these games, the friendship rater is in a house east of the southern Pokémon Center in Hammerlocke. He will comment on the friendship of the first Pokémon in the party:

In the anime

Ash and Pikachu

In the anime, the bond between Trainers and their Pokémon has been a theme since the first episode, in which Ash had trouble to form a friendship with his newly obtained Pikachu. After risking his safety to protect Pikachu from a flock of angry Spearow, he had earned Pikachu's trust, and the two have been inseparable ever since.

Pokémon that have friendly relationships with their Trainers are said to perform better in battles. Ash believes that befriending a Pokémon will make it grow stronger, and he treats all his Pokémon with utmost care and respect.

In Cruisin' for a Losin', the Director of the Contest Committee, Mr. Contesta, stated that a Pokémon's well being must be the number one priority of a Coordinator.

In Our Cup Runneth Over!, Contest Master Wallace stressed the importance of kinship. He also said that playing with Pokémon can help Trainers and Coordinators in learning how to bring out the potential of their Pokémon. In addition to enhancing a Pokémon's appearance, Pokémon grooming is said to make them happier. Trainers who devote themselves to the development of techniques that improve a Pokémon's health and happiness are known as Pokémon Breeders. Some people study to become Pokémon Connoisseurs to be able to identify the compatibility between Trainers and Pokémon and then offer advice on how to strengthen their friendship.

Just like in the games, friendship affects the power of Frustration. This was shown in Going for Choke!, in which Harley's Banette received a boost while using the move under the command of Jessie, a Trainer it does not like. Although the concept of Evolution by friendship has not been addressed directly, the Soothe Bell has appeared in the anime.
