In Japan, this card was available as an insert with the November 1996 issue of ''[[CoroCoro]] Comic''. The English version of the card was released through the {{TCG|Pokémon League}} in August 2001. The card was also released with slightly different artwork in Japan as a special card through All Nippon Airways in 1998. Passengers flying in conjunction with the "Pokémon Getaways" campaign could redeem their boarding passes for a two-card set that included Flying Pikachu and {{TCG ID|Wizards Promo|Dragonite|5}}. This variant card has an airplane added to the artwork, and was never released in English. The original print was later reprinted as a {{TCG|retro card}} in the {{TCG|Rising Rivals}} expansion, previously reprinted in the Japanese {{TCG|Bonds to the End of Time}} expansion.
