Revision as of 03:11, 30 July 2015

The Flying type (Japanese: ひこうタイプ Flying type) is one of the eighteen types. Notable Trainers who specialize in Flying-type Pokémon are the Gym Leaders Falkner of Violet City, Winona of Fortree City, and Skyla of Mistralton City. Prior to changes in Generation IV, all Flying-type moves were physical, but they may now also be special depending on the attack.

Characteristics

Defense

Defensively, the Flying type is very useful for its immunity to the powerful Ground-type moves and its resistance to Fighting, although most Flying types are part Normal, making their resistance to the Fighting type ineffective. However, its weaknesses to Electric, Rock, and Ice are common. In addition, almost all Flying types are dual-typed, thus making some vulnerable to double weaknesses.

Despite this, most Flying types have access to Roost, allowing them to restore their health and temporarily lose their Flying type, a utility that used to remove Flying type's weaknesses when healing. However, this also makes them vulnerable to Ground-type moves. If a pure Flying-type Pokémon uses Roost, then it will become a ??? type in Generation IV and a Normal type in Generation V onwards.

Offense

Offensively, Flying-type moves are usually only useful when benefited by same-type attack bonus and for their strength against the Fighting type, as well as advantages to Bug and Grass types. Most Flying types have above-average Attack or Special Attack and Speed stats, making them potentially offensive sweepers.

The Flying type pairs well with other fairly common attacking types, such as Ground. As Dark and Ghost-type moves are no longer resisted by Steel in Generation VI, the Flying-type pairs well with these two types along with the Water and Fighting types. The type itself is also useful for being able to hit any opponent in Triple Battles.

Contest properties

In Contests, Flying-type moves are typically Cool moves.

Pokémon

As of Generation VI, there are 93 Flying-type Pokémon or 12.9% of all Pokémon (counting forms and Mega Evolutions that change typing as different Pokémon), making it the third most common type. Every other type has been paired up with the Flying-type at least once.

Trivia

  • Generations I, II, and V introduced more Flying-type Pokémon than any other generation, each with 19. Generation VI introduced the fewest Flying-type Pokémon, with eight.
  • Generations I and IV introduced more Flying-type moves than any other generation, with seven. Generation II introduced the fewest Flying-type moves, with only one.
    • However, Gust only became a Flying-type move in Generation II. If this is taken into account, Generation IV introduced the most Flying-type moves and Generation II is tied with VI with two.
  • Until Tornadus debuted in Generation V, Flying was the only type that had no single-typed Pokémon.
  • Before Noibat and Noivern debuted in Generation VI, all dual-typed Flying Pokémon had Flying as their secondary type.
  • Although Normal is not typically paired up with other types, it is the most common type paired with Flying.
  • Each generation has introduced at least one part-Flying Legendary Pokémon.
  • All damage-dealing Flying-type moves except Air Cutter can hit non-adjacent Pokémon in Triple Battles.
  • There is a similarly named glitch type named the Bird type. The only known Glitch Pokémon that have it as a type are the Red and Blue version of Missingno. and 'M (00).
