This article is about the Generation III colored flutes. For one of the key items, see Poké Flute or Azure Flute.

A flute is a type of item from the Pokémon games introduced in Generation III.

Effects

Each of the colored flutes has a different effect, similar to consumables purchased at a Poké Mart, but flutes are not consumed when used. The Red, Yellow, and Blue Flutes, cure Attraction, Confusion, and Sleep, respectively. The Black Flute makes wild Pokémon encounters less common, while the White Flute makes wild Pokémon encounters more common.

Location

In Generation I and Pokémon Snap

The Poké Flute, while not a colored flute, is a key item which works similarly to the Blue Flute, acting like a reusable Awakening.

In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald

To obtain the flutes in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, the player must first receive the Soot Sack from the man in the glass-blowing shop on Route 113. Then, ash must be collected by walking through the ash-covered grass on the route. Once the player has enough ash, he/she can exchange it for one of the flutes.

Flute Amount of ash Sell Price Description
File:Blueflute.png Blue Flute 250 steps $50 A glass flute that awakens Sleeping Pokémon.
File:Redflute.png Red Flute 500 steps $100 A glass flute that snaps Pokémon out of Attraction.
File:Yellowflute.png Yellow Flute 500 steps $150 A glass flute that snaps Pokémon out of Confusion.
File:Blackflute.png Black Flute 1000 steps $200 A glass flute that keeps away wild Pokémon.
File:Whiteflute.png White Flute 1000 steps $250 A glass flute that lures wild Pokémon.

In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen

In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, only the Yellow Flute is obtainable without trading a Pokémon over from Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald holding one. The Yellow Flute can be purchased for 1600 coins at the Prize Corner of the Rocket Game Corner. The Poké Flute, which acts like a Blue Flute, also exists in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen.

In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness

The Yellow Flute can be found in an item box inside the S.S. Libra.

In Pokémon Colosseum

The Time Flute appears twice and can completely purify any Shadow Pokémon.

Generation IV

The colored flutes cannot be obtained in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl except by making a Pokémon hold them in Generation III and transferring them over via Pal Park. In Pokémon Platinum, the player will automatically receive a Black Flute from Looker when examining the broken cave painting on the third floor of Mt. Coronet before chasing Team Galactic. The White Flute will be given by the girl that owns the Suite Key. The Blue Flute is no longer usable outside of battle. In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, a Red Flute is available in the Lake of Rage, and a Black Flute can be found in Dark Cave.

Trivia

  • The flutes, along with the Poké Flute, are the only items that can be used in-battle and can be used multiple times.
  • In Generation III games, the Blue Flute can be used outside of battle, but it cannot be used this way in Generation IV games, as it is classified as a Battle item.
