Flint's Infernape (Japanese: オーバのゴウカザル Ōba's Goukazaru) is the only known Pokémon owned by Template:E4 in the anime. It is also one of the Pokémon he uses in the games, being his main one in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.

In the anime

Young Flint and Infernape as a Chimchar

Template:E4 trained Infernape as a child, when Infernape was a Chimchar. Before long, Flint and Chimchar were known as the strongest trainers in all of Sunyshore, winning battle after battle on their way to the top. When Flint met Volkner, Chimchar battled his Pikachu and won; but before long, Chimchar was defeated by Volkner and his Pikachu. After that, Chimchar had many battles with Volkner's Pikachu until Flint left the city. Flint trained with Chimchar on his way to becoming a member of the Sinnoh Elite Four and it eventually evolved into Monferno. Flint still remembers the time when his Monferno beat a Snorlax in the finals of the Sinnoh League and thus winning the championship. He kept on with his training and Monferno eventually evolved into Infernape.

Just as the other Pokémon belonging to the Elite Four are very powerful, Infernape is the same; its moves are all powerful in comparison to Infernape, its speed matches that of Pikachu, and it has no problem at all with type disadvantages, being able to match the power of a Water-type move with a Fire-type.

In Flint Sparks the Fire!, it broke Ash free from the robotic security system at the Sunyshore Gym. Infernape was later used in Flint and Ash's battle, where it easily defeated Buizel, despite being at a type disadvantage, and Ash's Infernape where they were not evenly matched at all. Its fight with Pikachu lasted longer but it still eventually won.

Young Flint and Infernape as a Monferno

It appeared again in Four Roads Diverged in a Pokémon Port! where it rescued Kenny's Floatzel from Team Rocket, and later battled Jasmine's Steelix; like in its battle with Ash's Pokémon, it easily won.

In DP191 Infernape was seen battling against Cynthia's Garchomp on TV. Despite a very harsh battle, Infernape could not beat Garchomp. However, as mentioned by the MC, It managed to defeat two of Cynthia's Pokémon.

Trivia

  • Out of all the Elite Four's Pokémon (excluding anime-considered Champions such as Lance and Cynthia), Infernape is the only one to make more than one physical appearance in the anime.
  • Infernape is subject to a continuity error: in Flint Sparks the Fire!, it was shown to still be a Chimchar when Flint is an adult, but is a Monferno in Four Roads Diverged in a Pokémon Port!, where Flint is still a child. It's unknown if Monferno's appearance is a mistake or a retcon to their story.
