Faraway place is a location placeholder found in the Generation IV games. This placeholder data is used when trading over a Pokémon from a third version, such as Platinum, which was captured in a new location not found in the original paired version. For example, if the Giratina from the Distortion World is traded to Pokémon Diamond or Pokémon Pearl, its location data will say "Faraway place" instead of "Distortion World", as the location data for the Distortion World is not present in Diamond and Pearl.

Locations in Pokémon Platinum which would show up as "Faraway place" in Diamond and Pearl include: Distortion World (Giratina), the room in the Galactic Eterna Building accessed using the Secret Key, and "Cynthia" (Togepi egg).

A Pokémon caught in a main series game taking place in another region (such as a Pokémon caught in Johto in HeartGold and SoulSilver traded to Diamond and Pearl, which take place in Sinnoh) will also have this placeholder. Instead of the new place's name appearing, Faraway place will appear instead.
