The Fairy type (Japanese: フェアリータイプ Fairy type) is one of the eighteen types. Notable Trainers who specialize in Fairy-type Pokémon include the Gym Leader Valerie of Laverre City.

The Fairy type was introduced in Generation VI. As well as introducing new Pokémon with the Fairy type, 22 Pokémon and 3 moves were changed to be of the Fairy type.

Defense

The Fairy type is considered to be one of the best defensive types, along with the Steel type. It has traits unlike any other type - a key resistance to the powerful and common Fighting type, as well as the Dark and Bug types, making it very difficult to cover against. Its most crucial defensive aspect, however, is its immunity to Dragon-type moves, to which nothing else is immune and which is only resisted by Steel. Fairy's only weaknesses are to Poison and Steel, both of which were rarely used offensively prior to its introduction, and even post-introduction there are scarce instances of powerful offense in those types.

Since the Pokémon of this type tend to have a high Special Defense, they excel at the role of being a special wall, further strengthened by the fact that there are very few powerful special attackers among Steel and Poison types (Magnezone and Gengar are effectively the only non-Legendary instances) - coverage moves such as super-effective Hidden Power will rarely do much damage, especially without STAB.

However, Fairies tend to have unimpressive Defense, and although they resist common physical attack types such as Fighting and Dark, they are very easily taken out by physical Steel or Poison moves such as Iron Head and Gunk Shot, made worse by the typically mediocre Speed Fairy-types possess. Many Fairy-types mitigate this through use of Reflect.

Offense

Fairy is also quite strong offensively. It is super-effective against Dragon, Fighting, and Dark, all of which previously only had two weaknesses. Dazzling Gleam is a very effective coverage move for non-Fairy-types (there being no Fairy-type Hidden Power). Fairy is resisted by the Fire, Poison, and Steel types. However, Fire types often struggle defensively and are not super-effective against Fairy, meaning they aren't as much of a threat as Poison- and Steel-types. Poison, however, is weak to Psychic-type moves which Fairy Pokémon are frequently able to learn.

Additionally, all three of the types that resist Fairy are weak to Ground, making Fairy and Ground a strong hypothetical combination. No Fairy/Ground types exist, however, and Fairies are generally unable to learn any Ground moves besides Hidden Power. Fairy also pairs well offensively with Ghost and Dark, with the former combination being resisted only by Litleo and Pyroar and the latter being resisted only by Mawile and Klefki.

Similarly to Dragon types, though, Fairy's offensive moves generally rely on high Special Attack and STAB, and their raw power tends to be underwhelming - the strongest option outside of signature moves is Moonblast, which only has a base power of 95. A handful of Fairy-types have Pixilate, which lets them substitute powerful Normal moves for middling Fairy ones. The type's weakness against Poison and Steel, which are also both super-effective against it, mean that Fairy types generally have few options against these types - compounded by usually being slower than Poison-types.

Contest properties

In Contests, Fairy-type moves are typically Beautiful and Cute moves. None of them are considered Cool or Tough moves.

As of Generation VI, there are 37 Fairy-type Pokémon or 5.1% of all Pokémon (counting those that are Fairy-type in at least one of their forms, including Mega Evolutions), making it the third rarest type, behind Ghost and Ice.

Interacting with the Fairy type

A Pokémon with Color Change, Protean, Imposter, or Multitype will become a Fairy-type Pokémon if (respectively) it is hit with a Fairy-type move, uses a Fairy-type move, is sent out against a Fairy-type opponent, or is holding a Pixie Plate.

Only Fairy-type Pokémon can have these Abilities. This does not include signature Abilities.

Trivia

• More Pokémon were changed to Fairy than either of the other types added since Generation I (the other two being Dark and Steel in Generation II), with 22. Also, more moves were changed to Fairy, with three. All three of them were Status moves introduced in Generation II and were previously Normal-type.
  • It is also the only one out of the three types to completely change the types of Pokémon from previous generations, changing several previously pure Normal-type Pokémon, such as Snubbull, to pure Fairy.
• Every type that resists Fairy also resists Grass and Bug.
  • In addition, those types are weak to Ground.
• The Fairy-type is one of the two types that Hidden Power cannot become, the other being the Normal-type.
  • This, combined with the lack of any Fairy-type moves in Kecleon's and Greninja's movesets, prevents all Pokémon that naturally have Protean from becoming Fairy-type using it (although Kecleon can become Fairy-type with its other Ability, Color Change).
• The Fairy type has the fewest physical moves of all types, with only one.
• Fairy-type has the fewest damage-dealing moves of any type at seven, with only six of these available to players.
• Dazzling Gleam is the only Fairy-type move that is available via a TM.
  • No Fairy-type moves are available via Move Tutors.
