The Fairy type (Japanese: フェアリータイプ Fairy type) is one of the eighteen types. Notable Trainers who specialize in Fairy-type Pokémon include the Gym Leader Valerie of Laverre City.

The Fairy type was introduced in Generation VI. As well as introducing new Pokémon with the Fairy type, 22 Pokémon were changed to Fairy types.

Characteristics

Defense

As it was created to balance the competitive play in Generation VI, Fairy type is considered to be one of the best defensive types, along with Steel. It has a key resistance to the powerful Fighting types, as well as the Dark and Bug types. Most of all, it also has a useful immunity to Dragon-type moves. Its only weaknesses are to Poison and Steel, both of which were rarely used offensively prior to its introduction.

Offense

Fairy is quite strong on offense as well. It is super-effective against Dragon, Fighting, and Dark, all of which previously had two weaknesses. Though resisted by Fire, Poison, and Steel, Fire types still struggle defensively, Poison types are statistically weak, and Steel types struggle offensively. Additionally, all three of those types are weak to Ground, making a Fairy and Ground attacking combination very effective if used against any single-type Pokémon. Fairy also pairs well with Ghost and Dark, with the former combination being resisted only by Litleo and Pyroar and the latter being resisted only by Mawile and Klefki.

Despite this, Fairy type is quite balanced due to the lack of powerful Fairy-type moves. Also, unlike most Dragon types, most Fairy types typically have high Special Attack and Special Defense, but relativly low Defense and Speed.

Contest properties

In Contests, Fairy-type moves are typically Beautiful moves. None of them are considered Cool or Tough moves.

Pokémon

As of Generation VI, there are 37 Fairy-type Pokémon, or 5.1% of all Pokémon (counting forms and Mega Evolutions that change typing as different Pokémon), making it the third rarest Pokémon type, behind Ghost and Ice.

Trivia

  • More Pokémon were changed to Fairy than either of the other types added since Generation I (the other two being Dark and Steel in Generation II), with 22. Also, more moves were changed to Fairy, with three. All three of them were introduced in Generation II and were previously Normal-type.
    • It is also the only one out of the three types to completely change the types of Pokémon from previous generations, changing several previously pure Normal-type Pokémon, such as Snubbull, to pure Fairy.
  • Every type that resists Fairy also resists Grass and Bug.
  • The Fairy-type is one of the two types that Hidden Power cannot become, the other being the Normal-type.
    • This, combined with the lack of any Fairy-type moves in Kecleon's and Greninja's movesets, prevents all Pokémon that naturally have Protean from becoming Fairy-type using it.
