Exchangeable item: Difference between revisions

An exchangeable item is a category of item which serves no in-game purpose aside from being able to be traded for another item or some sort of service. Though several Key Items fall under this category (such as Generation I and Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen's Bike Voucher), their exchange is often important to the story of the games, so they are not included here. These items are often also valuable items.

Heart Scale

Main article: Heart Scale

The Heart Scale is a scale commonly found on Luvdisc. From Generation III to Generation VII (with the exception of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen), Heart Scales are used as currency for the Move Reminder's services, at a rate of one scale per move.

Tiny Mushroom and Big Mushroom

Main articles: Tiny Mushroom and Big Mushroom

In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Tiny Mushrooms and Big Mushrooms are used as currency for the Move Reminder instead of Heart Scales, at a rate of two Tiny Mushrooms or one Big Mushroom per move.

Shoal Shell and Shoal Salt

In Hoenn, the player can trade in four Shoal Shells and Shoal Salts to an old man in Shoal Cave to make a Shell Bell, a restorative held item.

Star Piece

Main article: Star Piece

In Pokémon Platinum the player can give Star Pieces to Mr. Fuego in exchange for a shard of each color. In Generation V, the player can exchange a Star Piece with a man in Anville Town on Saturdays and Sundays, who will give the player a PP Up as thanks.

Shards

Main article: Shard

These items, also introduced in Generation III, come in different colors: red, blue, green, and yellow. They can be exchanged for the elemental Evolution stones in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, in groups of ten for the TMs containing weather-modifying moves in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, and in groups of eight for special Move Tutor moves in Pokémon Platinum. They can be found lying around in certain areas, held by certain Pokémon, or in the Underground of Sinnoh. They can also be traded in for certain Berries from Jugglers found in Violet City and Fuchsia City. In Black 2 and White 2, Move Tutors found in Driftveil, Lentimas, Humilau, and Nacrene will use Shards as payment (from two to twelve), although each Tutor requires only one kind of Shard.

Apricorns

Main article: Apricorn

These items are exclusive to Generation II, Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, and Pokémon Sword and Shield. There are several different colors, and they can be made into different Poké Balls by Kurt in Azalea Town or by the Cram-o-matic in the Master Dojo.

Pass Orbs

These items are exclusive to Generation V. They can be used to purchase Pass Powers at the Entralink.

Bottle Caps

These items were introduced in Generation VII along with Hyper Training. They can be exchanged to allow the player to raise a Pokémon's IVs through Hyper Training. They come in two colors that allow the player to raise either one or all of a Pokémon's IVs.

Galarica Twigs

Main article: Galarica Twig

Galarica Twigs, released in patch 1.2.0 of Pokémon Sword and Shield, are found scattered across the Isle of Armor and the Crown Tundra. If the player gathers eight of them, they can be given to a young woman on a small island in the Workout Sea, who will turn them into a Galarica Cuff, which is required to evolve Galarian Slowpoke into Slowbro. If the player gathers fifteen of them, they can be given to a young woman in the Roaring-Sea Caves, who will turn them into a Galarica Wreath, which is required to evolve Galarian Slowpoke into Slowking.

Armorite Ore and Dynite Ore

These items were released in patch 1.2.0 of Pokémon Sword and Shield. They can be exchanged for various items or services on the Isle of Armor and in the Crown Tundra.

In the anime

In Defending the Homeland!, Clemont mentioned having used Big Mushrooms as a part of the new food he had just made for the group.

In Partner Promises, Mallow mentioned that the jewelry shop "Alola Sunrise" makes its jewelry from Heart Scales and Corsola branches.

In Treasure Hunt, Akala Style!, during a Stoutland Search treasure hunt set up for Ash and his classmates by Olivia, Mallow found multiple Tiny and Big Mushrooms, while Sophocles found a Star Piece. In the dub, the Star Piece was incorrectly referred to as a Comet Shard.

In the Poké Problem extra scene of SM120, Lana showed her classmates a Heart Scale, joking that it was a Kyogre scale.

In A Recipe for Success!, Mallow got some dried-up Big Mushrooms from Oranguru to be used at Aina's Kitchen. In the same episode, she also got a Heart Scale from a group of Fearow that had come to visit Oranguru's place.

A Heart Scale appeared in Getting to the Heart of it All! as one of the heart-shaped objects stolen by a Banette.

A Big Mushroom appeared in A Week to Go and Old Wounds, where Shoko gave it to one of her Patrat to hold while demonstrating Black her Marvelous Bridge Patrat Show.

Trivia

• Heart Scales are the shed scales of Luvdisc.
• The Move Reminder in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen accepts Mushrooms instead of Heart Scales, most probably due to the lack of Luvdisc in Kanto and the Sevii Islands, as well as the abundance of Paras and Parasect.
• Due to a mistake in the Nintendo Power Pokémon Diamond and Pearl guide, there was a rumor that the Shoal Salt functions like the Leftovers. However, multiple tests in-game have shown that the Shoal Salt does nothing; it is in fact the Shell Bell that functions similarly to Leftovers, itself created in Generation III from four Shoal Salts and four Shoal Shells.
• In Pokémon X and Y, the Heart Scale is incorrectly sorted in the Bag as an Evolution stone when the bag is sorted by type, instead of as an exchangeable item.
