Release information

This card was included in the English Base Set as a Trainer card, first released in the Japanese Expansion Pack, with artwork by Keiji Kinebuchi. This print was later reprinted in the English Base Set 2 expansion, the Japanese Nivi City Gym, Tamamushi City Gym, and Yamabuki City Gym Theme Decks, both decks of the Japanese Quick Starter Gift Set, and in the English Legendary Collection expansion.

It was later reclassified in the English Black & White expansion as an Item card with new artwork by Kent Kanetsuna, previously released in the Japanese Beginning Set, Beginning Set for Girls, and Black Collection. It was later reprinted in the Japanese Beginning Set + and Beginning Set Pikachu Version rereleases of the original Black & White Beginning Set, and in the English Plasma Blast expansion, first released in the Japanese Blastoise + Kyurem-EX Combo Deck.

Energy Retrieval was again reprinted with new artwork by 5ban Graphics as one of the XY-P Promotional cards available in the Card Box Xerneas•Yveltal including Energy Card from December 13, 2013. This print was later included in February 2015's Primal Clash expansion. The Japanese Bandit Ring expansion included a Secret print of Energy Retrieval, which was later printed in the English Ancient Origins expansion. The original XY-P Promotional print was made available in a number of subsequent Japanese products, including the Card Box Primal Groudon•Primal Kyogre including Energy Card, the Emboar-EX vs Togekiss-EX Deck Kit, and the Card Box Mega Mewtwo X•Mega Mewtwo Y including Energy Card. It was reprinted again in the Japanese BREAK Starter Pack. For the Expansion Pack 20th Anniversary during the Generation VI XY Era, it was reprinted as a retro card with the updated effect featuring the same artwork as the original print and an updated card template reminiscent of the Original Era layout.
