Effect Spore (Japanese: ほうし Spore) is an Ability introduced in Generation III. Seven Pokémon can have this Ability, all of them Grass-type.
Effect
In battle
Effect Spore may inflict the foe with a status problem if they make contact. It has a 30% chance of inducing either Paralysis, Sleep or Poison on the opponent when hit with a move that makes contact.
The chance of inflicting a given status is not the same for each status. Overall, Effect Spore has a 9% chance of inducing Poison, 10% chance of inducing Paralysis, and 11% chance of inducing Sleep.[1]
Outside of battle
Effect Spore has no effect outside of battle.

- Out of the four Abilities that may inflict a non-volatile status ailment upon contact, Effect Spore is the only one that has not yet activated in the Pokémon anime.
- All of the Pokémon that have Effect Spore without having it as its Hidden Ability have the species name "Mushroom Pokémon".
- Effect Spore is the only Ability that can cause Sleep.
