Ash's second battle takes place on the Rock Field where he relies on his Squirtle to hopefully take down a Nidorino. In between matches, Ash needs to drop off his Pokémon at the Pokémon Center to have them taken care of. Team Rocket takes this opportunity to make one more attempt at stealing Pikachu. They set up a Pokémon Center of their own and when Ash drops off his Pokéballs, they grab them and run! When he finally gets his Pokémon back, Ash must race to make it to his third match of competition, which will be held on the Ice Field.

Plot

Ash is in his second preliminary battle, on the Rock field. Both he and his opponent are down to their last Pokémon. Ash sends out Squirtle, while the opponent sends out Nidorino. Both put up a fierce fight, but Squirtle manages to win with a Skull Bash, allowing Ash to advance to the third round.

It is revealed that Gary was watching Ash's battle with his cheerleaders. He says that Ash is acting like he won the whole competition after winning "two easy matches". He then says, "He better enjoy all his celebratin' now, 'cause when his luck runs out, Ash Ketchum won't have anything to cheer about. Unless he wants to cheer for me, right girls? Hah!" His cheerleaders chant his name happily at this. While he is speaking, he seems jealous and a bit spiteful toward Ash.

Ash and his friends search for a Pokémon Center so Ash can heal his Pokémon before the third round. The centers are crowded and many Nurse Joys and Jennies are everywhere in the streets. Brock's love meter skyrockets at this rate. Team Rocket relishes this opportunity to swipe Ash's Pokémon and they do so by opening a fake Pokémon Center. After Team Rocket reveals their true identities to Ash and company, they are about to escape with Ash's stolen Pokémon, but Brock's Onix stops them and gives Ash his Pokémon back. After biting open a hole in the balloon, Onix sends Team Rocket blasting off again! After fending off Team Rocket, the group then hears that new Pokémon will be admitted into the Pokémon Center. Ash takes this opportunity to heal his Pokémon.

Ash is now in the middle of the third round match with Pete Pebbleman in the Ice Field. Both Trainers each won the first round of the match. Ash uses Kingler for the battle, while Pete uses Cloyster for the battle. Ash tells Kingler to use Crabhammer, while Pete orders Cloyster to use Withdraw. This doesn't look good for Ash since Cloyster used Withdraw. Kingler will get worn out from using Crabhammer, but Misty and Brock encourage Ash to keep going, because Cloyster is still losing health despite the defense boost. Kingler keeps hitting Cloyster with its Crabhammer until Cloyster's shell finally cracks, knocking it out. Pete recalls Cloyster and sends out Arcanine. Kingler tries a Bubble attack, but Pete's Arcanine dodges it and uses Dragon Rage. Kingler is defeated. Ash recalls Kingler and sends Pikachu into the battlefield. Pikachu uses Agility, but Arcanine is trying to stop him with a Fire Blast. The Fire Blast attacks melt the field. Pikachu dives into the water, then uses Thunderbolt. Pete's Arcanine is defeated, and Ash is heading for the fourth round.

Trivia

  • Professor Oak's Pokémon Lecture: Indigo Plateau Conference tournament format
    • Pokémon senryū summary: On the field, choosing the Pokémon, is difficult.
  • The episode's title has the same name as one of Robert Frost's Poems.
  • Ash's challenger on the Rock Field is left unnamed in both versions.
  • Misty mentions Hit Points in this episode, the only time it is referenced in the anime. This was in the dub only, however.
  • Brock's ability to identify fake Nurse Joys is first seen in this episode.
  • As Ash is looking for a place to eat he passes a movie theater with a poster for Pokémon in Love, the movie of which he helped produce.
  • This is one of the very few times in the anime that Team Rocket uses Ash's first name instead of calling him 'twerp' or 'brat'.

Errors

  • In the Brazilian Portuguese dub version, when Misty refers to Hit Points her words are mistranslated as Pontos de Ataque.
  • On the posters in the village, the é in Pokémon lacks its accent.
  • While Team Rocket is reciting their motto the white piece of paper behind them covering part of the "R" is missing the blue design and text.
  • On the Ice Field, the announcer says that each contestant has won one match each, but Ash has actually won two already.
  • On the Rock Field, the announcer says that the battle is just beginning, and that each Trainer has only one Pokémon remaining.
  • As the Officer Jennys run past Ash and Misty, Ash comments on the large amount of them. However, when a group of Nurse Joys run past, Misty calls them Officer Jennys instead.
  • Misty says that Brock and Ash need to get all of their Pokémon back, but only Ash's Pikachu was stolen.
  • Kingler faints, but Ash is still able to recall it to its Poké Ball.
  • On the score boards, the green team is usually on the left, while it is on the right this time.
  • The scoreboard prior to Ash's battle on the Ice Field shows him as the Red Competitor on the right side, but he is on the Green Competitor's side of the field.
  • Nidorino only attacked without his Trainer's commands.
  • When Brock tells Misty that Ash was "starving", Brock's shirt collar is discolored, making it look like his head is disconnected to the rest of his body.

Dub edits

  • North American DVD releases cut roughly 13 seconds from this episode. Immediately after Ash and Pikachu pass by the movie theater showing Pokémon in Love, there are several shots showing Pokémon-related merchandise, including Clefairy figures, Gengar cotton candy, and Cubone bobbleheads. Pikachu taps the head on one of the bobbleheads, causing it to bob and say its name. Ash and Pikachu laugh and move on. This segment is still present in the broadcast and streaming versions, as well as Australian DVDs.
