Dragonite first appeared in Hello, Pummelo!, when it was seen flying around the island. Later when Team Rocket tried to steal Dragonite, they were sent blasting off from its Hyper Beam attack.

With its impressive speed and power, it was able to take out Charizard, Squirtle and Tauros, although all three managed to land at least one blow on Dragonite before they fainted. Even though it fought three of Ash's Pokémon, it was still able to defeat Team Rocket when they tried another attempt at capturing it when it was tired out.

It then had to battle Pikachu in the last round of the match. Despite being tired out from the previous battles, it managed to put up a good fight against Pikachu, but, after a fierce battle, it was defeated by Pikachu's use of a Thunder attack while positioned on Dragonite's head, and Ash became a champion of the Orange League.
