Dr. Fuji (Japanese: フジ博士 Dr. Fuji) is a character in the first Pokémon movie, Mewtwo Strikes Back. He is also featured in The Birth of Mewtwo.
After his daughter Amber died, he devoted his life to trying to bring her back through cloning. His wife could not go on watching him try to bring their dead daughter back to life and so she left him, and still, he worked.
Eventually, his studies gained the attention of Giovanni, who said he would fund Fuji's project if Fuji also cloned the legendary Pokémon, Mew. This resulted in the creation of Mewtwo.
After the original Charmandertwo, Bulbasaurtwo, and Squirtletwo died during the experiment, Ambertwo, the cloned form of Amber, died as well, leading Dr. Fuji to panic and administer a form of emotion-suppressing serum to Mewtwo which may have caused its seemingly twisted personality. Shortly after gaining sentience, Mewtwo blew up their lab on New Island, presumably killing everyone, including Fuji. A record of his final words before Mewtwo blew up the lab survived the explosion, which Mewtwo also ended up keeping, which Jessie, James and Meowth later ended up stumbling upon when sneaking into New Island.
He was in charge of a team of scientists. Whether they were his team before he was hired by Team Rocket or were provided by them remains unknown to this day.
- In the novelization of the first movie, he was given the name of "Professor John Smith".
- Dr. Fuji is the first human to die in the anime.
Most likely related to Mr. Fuji, the founder of Cinnabar Research Lab in the video games, who was hinted to be involved in Mewtwo's creation. His name may come from Mt. Fuji.
It is also possible that Dr. Fuji may have been inspired by or based on Dr. Tenma from Astroboy since both lose their child and attempt to recreate them through science as well as share more than a passing resemblance.
