Dive (Japanese: ダイビング Diving) is a damage-dealing Water-type move introduced in Generation III as HM08. It lost this status in Generation IV, but regained it in Generation V as HM06.

Effect

In battle

Generation III

On the first turn, the user will dive down for one turn and become invulnerable to most attacks, with the exception of Surf and Whirlpool, which will do twice the damage to the submerged Pokémon. The user can also be hit underwater if it was previously targeted by Lock-On or Mind Reader. Sandstorm, Hail, and Shadow Sky will not cause damage during the semi-invulnerable turn.

Dive's base power is 60.

In the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series, Dive cannot be used unless the user is standing on water.

Generation IV

Dive's base power was raised to 80. All other effects are the same.

The user may now be hit while underwater if it is attacked by a Pokémon with No Guard, or if the user has No Guard themselves.

Due to the lack of diving areas in Sinnoh, Johto and Kanto, this move has been relieved of its HM status.

If a Power Herb is held by the user, Dive can be executed in one turn.

Generation V

Dive has returned to HM status, this time as HM06.

Outside of battle

Dive allows players to go underwater in dark patches of water while they are Surfing. The only regions in which these spots (and the HM itself) have been seen are Hoenn and Unova.

Trivia

  • Unlike Whirlpool and Defog, which can be freely known by a Pokémon sent forward to Generation V when said Pokémon is transferred from a game they are not an HM in, a Pokémon with Dive will be prevented from being migrated to Generation IV even in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, where Dive is neither usable, required, nor legitimately available to the player without trading.
    • Because of this, few Pokémon learn it in Diamond and Pearl; therefore, Dive can only be obtained by leveling up certain Pokémon. This changed in Platinum with the inclusion of a Move Tutor capable of teaching the move to certain Pokémon, including all who could have it in Generation III.
  • Although the HM itself is not obtainable in FireRed and LeafGreen, it can be obtained via cheating and functions like a normal HM.
    • Lorelei's Cloyster knows this move, despite the fact that the only way for a Cloyster in FireRed or LeafGreen to know the move legitimately would be to trade one from Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald which knows it.
  • Dive is the second former HM move to regain HM status at a later generation, after Whirlpool.
    • Dive is also the second HM move to be learned through two separate HMs: HM08 in Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, and HM06 in Black and White.
  • Arceus can learn Dive as a Move Tutor in Generation IV, but can't learn it as an HM in Generation V.
  • Dragonite and Beartic are the only non-legendary Pokémon able to learn Dive that are not Water-type.
  • Dive is the only HM move not to be used in the anime.
  • Dive is the only HM move in Generation V that cannot be obtained during the main game.
