Synopsis

Some Seedot, Nuzleaf, and Shiftry are sleeping in a large tree at night. One of the Seedot slips off its branch, bounces off a Shiftry's head, and onto a Nuzleaf, causing Nuzleaf to slip and fall from its branch onto a Vileplume. The Vileplume runs away from the tree, taking Nuzleaf with it. When Nuzleaf wakes up in the morning, away from its home, it calls out for its friends, but no one answers. When it goes to look for them, it slips down a cliff and disappears.

Meanwhile the next day, Ash, Dawn and Brock are walking down a road. Brock and his Bonsly are reading a map, which shows that the Oreburgh Gym is just up over the big mountain ahead. Ash wants to climb over it right away, but Dawn would rather stay at the Pokémon Center just up ahead. Then Bonsly starts to cry, so Brock feeds it. Ash and Dawn are both surprised that Bonsly can eat solid food now. All of a sudden, a big column of wind erupts in the forest ahead of them. Ash and co. decide to check it out. Nurse Joy has found the injured Nuzleaf, which refuses to let her come close to it, attacking her with a Razor Wind attack. When Ash and friends get there, Brock protects Nurse Joy, and then goes gaga over her, but not for long. Croagunk hits Brock with a Poison Jab and drags him away. Nurse Joy explains that she found the Nuzleaf and tried to treat it, but it wouldn't let it. Brock persuades Nurse Joy to let him handle it. Brock approaches slowly, explaining as he goes. You must hide your hands and open your heart ahen approaching a Pokemon that feels threatened, than crouch to eye level. He also remembers that Nuzleaf like it when you blow on leaves to make a whistle sound. Brock offers Nuzleaf an Oran Berry, but it still is a little scared. Brock calls Bonsly out and asks it to have some of the Oran Berry, to show that it is safe. Not only does Nuzleaf take the Berry, it also makes great friends with Bonsly. So Brock gives Nuzleaf and Bonsly a whole bowl of Oran berries to share. Brock says they will get Nuzleaf back to its tree, so Nurse Joy can finish her work. She agrees, and heads back.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket was eavesdropping on the Nuzleaf conversation, and conclude that it would be a great present for Giovanni. Meowth imagines how Giovanni is sitting on a grassy hill after work, watching the sunset. He says that he has all the money he ever wanted, but it still isn't enough. Then Nuzleaf comes, sits next to him, and starts to play his leaf whistle. This causes Giovanni to think about how great his new Nuzleaf is, and that "Meowth and Friends" should be given more money. This fantasy causes Team Rocket to become very happy, and Wobbuffet & Mime Jr. to join in the fun.

On the journey to get Nuzleaf back to its tree, Nuzleaf and Bonsly are walking together. Dawn comments that they are just like old friends. Brock thinks it's because Nuzleaf thinks Bonsly's a Grass type, with it really being a Rock. Then, Meowth, disguised as a Shiftry, jumps out, followed by a disguised Jessie and James. They claim that this is one of Nuzleaf's friends, and that it's been lost for 30 years! But their cover is blown when Dawn scans "Shiftry" with her pokedex, revealing that it is actually a Meowth. But Meowth exclaims that Dawn's Pokedex must be broken, causing for their disguise to be ruined. Team Rocket states their usual motto, with Mime Jr. and Wobbuffet at the end. James fires a net launcher, trapping Bonsly and Nuzleaf inside. But Brock runs after the net and jumps on to it, which carries him away. Ash calls out Staravia to cut the rope with its wings, but Jessie sends out Seviper and, with a Haze attack, are able to escape with Brock tagging along.

When they land in a grassy clearing, they tie Brock to a tree, but he protests in saying that they can't take Nuzleaf away from his home. But they just tease him and tell him to behave. He starts to think of how he can get Nuzleaf and Bonsly away from them. But he overhears them complaining about the scarcity of food that they have. He then tells Team Rocket that he can make them something out of that food. They ponder this for a moment, and then let him. When he's done, they feast on it, crying tears of joy as they scarf it down. But while they are eating, Brock sneaks away with the cage to a small clearing in the forest. Brock tells Bonsly to use Double Edge on the cage. He does, and Brock tells him to do it again. Since Double Edge does damage to Bonsly as well, Bonsly gets hurt and begins to cry. Nuzleaf comforts it, and Brock motivates Bonsly into trying it one more time. It works. The cage breaks open and they are free. Bonsly is dancing around to celebrate, when suddenly he starts to glow white, and evolves into Sudowoodo! Meanwhile, Staravia reports negative when going to find Brock, so Ash and Dawn go where Team Rocket's balloon went down. Brock looks for Ash and Dawn, too.

Team Rocket is in their Meowth Balloon, furious that Brock left them. But Brock is about to cross a stream. Sudowoodo cowers a little, not liking water, so Brock puts it in its Poké Ball. This causes Nuzleaf to start crying because it doesn't want Sudowoodo to leave. So Brock calls it back out. Brock explains that Nuzleaf likes to have Sudowoodo around, so it will be courageous and cross the stream. He slowly steps from rock to rock, almost slipping a few times, but makes it to the final rock. But then Team Rocket comes, frightening Sudowoodo, who remains on the last rock, still not across. Team Rocket lands and Jessie calls Seviper out, with Brock getting Croagunk. Seviper uses Bite, which does nothing, so Croagunk knocks Seviper away with a Poison Jab. Seviper uses Poison Tail, but before it can hit, Croagunk uses Poison Sting, which hits, going past Seviper as well and destroying the Meowth Balloon. Ash and Dawn see the smoke from the explosion, and head that way. Back at the battle, Seviper comes back with Wrap. But after multiple Brick Breaks, Seviper is out. But, due to the Wrap, so is Croagunk.

James sends out Carnivine, but Brock doesn't have a Pokemon. Carnivine uses Bullet Seed on Brock and Nuzleaf, which causes Nuzleaf to begin to cry and cower. Sudowoodo sees this, and overcomes his fear in order to protect Nuzleaf. He jumps to the shore, and even though he lands in the water, he gets right back out and goes to help Nuzleaf and Brock. He dodges Bite and then uses Double Edge, which hits directly. He uses Double Edge again, and then Sudowoodo uses Mimic on another one of Carnivine's Bullet Seeds. At this time, Ash and Dawn show up and offer to take over the battle, but Brock says no, since this is Sudowoodo's first battle. Then Carnivine quickly uses Bullet Seed, which hits. But Sudowoodo uses Double Edge, which hits. But then Carnivine uses Bite and latches on to Sudowoodo. But Sudowoodo knocks him off with Flail. Carnivine uses Bullet Seed again, which Sudowoodo dodges and then Mimics, knocking Carnivine out.

Dustox and Cacnea are quickly sent out. Ash's Pikachu starts to help out, but before anyone can make a move, a large gust of wind comes, accompanied by a Shiftry. Meowth tries to persuade Shiftry that Ash and friends were trying to harm Nuzleaf. But while Shiftry is distracted, Team Rocket uses an extendo - hand to grab Nuzleaf and take him to their Wobbuffet hot - air balloon. But Shiftry uses a Razor Wind on the balloon to take it down, with Pikachu doing the big Thunderbolt to send them "blasting off again."

Nuzleaf is finally back in its tree with all its friends. As Sudowoodo, Brock, Ash, Dawn, and Pikachu wish them a safe life, Sudowoodo waves a fond farewell. Now Ash's gym battle is only a mountain climb away.

Dub edits

  • When this episode aired in Japan, along with A Staravia Is Born in 2006, there was no opening, and a cold opening intro. It went straight to the episode after the previous episode finished. In the English version, a cold open intro, possibly made up by Pokémon USA, shows Team Rocket starving, and Brock tied to a tree offering them grub.
