Cynthia (Japanese: シロナ Shirona) is a Pokémon master and Elite Four Champion in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl and Pokémon Platinum. Other than the player using a female character, she is the first known female Pokémon League champion in the video game series.

In the anime

Cynthia in the anime

Cynthia was first mentioned in Lucian's flashback in An Elite Meet and Greet. She made her first appearance in Top-Down Training!. Her Japanese voice actress is 櫻井智 Tomo Sakurai and her English voice actress is Emily Jenness. Internationally, she is played by Samira Fernandes in the Brazilian Portuguese dub.

She was first seen battling against Lucian with her Garchomp on television. She then arrived in Amity Square where she was studying ancient tablets. Paul then challenged her to a battle. She defeated four of Paul's Pokémon using only her Garchomp.

She reappeared in DP096 and DP097 where she tried to stop Team Galactic from stealing the Lustrous Orb.

She has been seen battling and defeating Aaron in DP100.

In the games

Cynthia helps the main character against Team Galactic in a point in the game. She is also found on Route 214 after the player has defeated Crasher Wake and received the Fen Badge. She gives the player the SecretPotion to get past the Psyduck group on Route 210. She is very interested in mythology and history, and spends her time exploring various sites associated with Legendary Pokémon of the Sinnoh region.

Later, she reappears as the League Champion.

Quotes

Before battle

"One look at you tells me many things about you. Together, you and your Pokémon overcame all the challenges you faced, however difficult. It means that you've triumphed over any personal weaknesses, too. The power you learned... I can feel it emanating from you. That's enough talking. Let's get on with why you're here. I, Cynthia, accept your challenge as the Pokémon League Champion! There won't be any letup from me!"

OR

"Have you been keeping well? Thank you for Mt. Coronet. I'm truly grateful. Together, you and your Pokémon overcame all the challenges you faced, however difficult. It means that you've triumphed over any personal weaknesses, too. The power you learned... I can feel it emanating from you. But that's enough talk. Let's get on with why you're here. As the Pokémon League Champion, I accept your challenge!"

The bottom quote is only said the very first time she is challenged. After winning at least once, it permanently changes to the top quote.

During battle

"I can't remember the last time I was put in a corner like this!"

"I won't let this end yet! This match is too fun to let it end this easily!"

When defeated

"Just a few moments ago, you were the most powerful challenger. And just now, you became the most powerful of all the Trainers. You are now our newest Champion!"

In the manga

Pokémon Special

She first appeared in Eterna City just after the trio's starters evolved. She lent them some help before the Gym challenge. She later appears after Platina's Gym challenge in Pastoria City to help some injured Psyduck.

Trivia

  • Cynthia, in Diamond and Pearl, is the first League Champion since Pokémon Yellow's Blue not to use any Template:Type2 Pokémon in battle as Champion.
  • Cynthia is the first female NPC champion (player characters Leaf, Kris, May, and Dawn become champion at the end of their journey) and the first NPC champion since Blue to not have a type theme.
  • Cynthia's hairbands resemble Lucario's "Aura Sensors".
  • Cynthia is the only member of the Sinnoh Elite Four not to use any Pokémon released in Generation II.
  • As of Platinum, Cynthia owns the only two non-Legendary Pokémon capable of learning the move Aura Sphere.
  • In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, Lucario is the only Pokémon on Cynthia's team that is male. Strangely enough, this was changed in Platinum.
  • Even though Platinum was released before DP096 and DP097, she only used Garchomp and Gastrodon in those episodes, despite Gastrodon being the only Pokémon to be removed from her team in Platinum. Though it is possible that the episode was made well before Platinum was released.
