Cosmoem (Japanese: コスモウム Cosmovum) is a Psychic-type Legendary Pokémon introduced in Generation VII.

It evolves from Cosmog starting at level 43 and evolves into either Solgaleo or Lunala starting at level 53 depending on the game it evolves in. In Pokémon Sun, Ultra Sun, Sword, and Scarlet it evolves into Solgaleo, and in Pokémon Moon, Ultra Moon, Shield, and Violet it evolves into Lunala.

Biology

Cosmoem is a Pokémon in the shape of a translucent, dark-blue orb with a starscape pattern set in a golden shell-like structure. The main portion of the shell is a flat oval around the center of the orb. Eight more flat, half-oval projections surround the orb in an asterisk-shape. At the center of the main body is a much smaller black core. The upper half of the core has a thin blue line on the front, back, and each side, while the lower has pink lines. On the front are two orange semicircles, which appear to be closed eyes. The overall shape of this Pokémon also resembles an eye. When evolving, the Pokémon glows either an orange or a purple color, correlating to Solgaleo and Lunala respectively, gaining traits of either a stylized sun or a stylized moon.

Encased in its sturdy, cocoon-like shell, Cosmoem is unable to move. In Pokémon Refresh, it cannot even eat. It grows as it absorbs starlight and the dust in the air. Its body is warm to the touch. Cosmoem's shell is said to be harder than any known material. In the ancient times, it was known as "The cocoon of the stars" by the people of Alola.

Cosmoem is one of the shortest Pokémon in existence. Despite this, it is also the heaviest Pokémon in existence, being tied with Celesteela. Cosmoem's height in the Pokédex is actually measured by it's width, rather than its height, as seen in its concept art.

Evolution

Cosmoem evolves from Cosmog and evolves into either Solgaleo or Lunala.

• Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon: Nebby, the Cosmog that travels with Lillie, eventually evolves into Cosmoem after being forced to open an Ultra Wormhole by Lusamine. At the Altar of the Sunne^SUS/Altar of the Moone^MUM, the player and Lillie play the Sun and Moon Flutes, causing Nebby to evolve into Solgaleo^SUS or Lunala^MUM, where it eventually is caught by the player In Sun or Moon. While in Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon it fuses with Necrozma turning Necrozma into its Dusk Mane^US or Dawn Wings^UM form.

Cosmoem debuted in Faba's Revenge!, where Ash's Cosmog, Nebby, evolved into one after being trapped in a device constructed by Faba. Nebby later evolved into a Solgaleo in Revealing the Stuff of Legend! after being blessed by the guardian deities.

Nebby was revealed to have evolved into a Cosmoem in A Raid and Po Town. It later evolved into Lunala.

A Cosmog that was given to Guzma by the Aether Foundation was revealed to have evolved into a Cosmoem in Battle in Vast Poni Canyon. It reappeared in Play the Melody That Echoes in the Altar, evolving into Solgaleo soon after.

Origin

Cosmoem has characteristics of both a stylized sun and a stylized moon, having rays and a pair of crescents, respectively. Its enormous weight despite its extremely small size shares similarities with super-compressed astronomical bodies such as black holes and neutron stars. Given its description, it seems to be an embodiment of star formation in general. It may also be based on the idea of the world egg. When viewed from the front, its shape resembles an eye.

Cosmoem may be a combination of cosmo, ovum (Latin for egg), and embryo.
