Combusken (Japanese: ワカシャモ Wakasyamo) is a dual-type Fire/Fighting Pokémon.

It evolves from Torchic starting at level 16, and evolves into Blaziken starting at level 36.

Biology

Physiology

Combusken is a chicken-like Pokémon that trains so that when it evolves, it has all the power and strength it needs. Most of Combusken’s upper body is tan in coloration, and most of its lower body orange. It has a feather crest on top of its head with three orange points. Its eyes and beak and also orange. It also seems that it wears a long-sleeved jacket, with three razor-sharp claws at the ends of its long arms. There are shaggy tan feathers on the top of Combusken’s thighs, and from the center of the waist is an orange-colored, pointed pattern. It has bulging thighs that seem big compared to its body ratio. Their gray-colored legs are capable of devastating kicks, and Combusken has a small pointed tail.

Gender differences

A female has a smaller feather crest.

Special abilities

Combusken is known as the young fowl Pokémon. One of their specialties is Double Kick.

Behavior

Wild Combusken comb through heated plains, rolling hills, slopes and mountains in search of food. They travel in small flocks of 7 to 10 Pokémon. They are often found traveling with Torchic. Whenever possible, Combusken take the opportunity to compete against other Fighting-type Pokémon, to hone their kicking skills.

They are very noisy and can often be heard squawking. In the mornings and in battle, their sharp cries can be heard for miles around.

Habitat

Combusken are usually found in grasslands and plains. They are sometimes found in the hills or mountains though.

Diet

In the anime

Combusken first appeared in Having a Wailord of a Time. The Nurse Joy of Slateport City was keeping a Torchic, Treecko and Mudkip for a girl who was going to start being a Trainer. The Torchic evolved and had to be hidden. After the Combusken saved a Wailord, Nurse Joy decided to keep it as a guard for her Pokémon Center.

May's Torchic evolved into a Combusken in A Shroomish Skirmish, and long after into a Blaziken in Once More with Reeling!

Trivia

  • Combusken is the only second form of a starter Pokémon that has a gender difference.
  • Although the Pokédex entries state that it emits sharp cries to boost its concentration, it cannot learn Howl.
  • As of Generation IV, Torchic and Combusken are the only non-flying type Pokémon to learn Mirror Move by leveling up. This trait was shared with their second stage evolution, Blaziken, in Generation III.
  • Despite being based on a bird, because of it's type Combusken is weak against Flying moves. It shares this trait with it's evolved form Blaziken.

Origin

Combusken is probably based on a cockfighting chicken. Combusken may also be based on the basan, a fire-breathing chicken.

Name origin

Combusken's name is a combination of combustible, able to burn, and chicken. It may also be a pun on combustion.

Wakasyamo is a combination of 若い wakai, young, and 軍鶏 shamo, a breed of Japanese chicken once raised for fighting.

In other languages

  • German: Jungglut - From jung (young) and Glut (ember).
  • French: Galifeu - From Gallus (the genus that includes chickens) and feu (fire).
  • Korean: 영치코 Yeongchiko
