Using a Gameshark on a Generation I game, it's possible to obtain single coins for {{PDollar}}10 each. This may have been a possible alternative to buying coins at places other than the Game Corner, but was scrapped in the final cut of the Generation I games. It might have been a method for product testers at Gamefreak to buy coins more quickly than the lengthy process to buy coins 50 at a time to test if they would be properly exchanged at the game corner.

It may be of note that when forced into a [[Poké Mart]], they are available for purchase at the price of {{pdollar}}10 per Coin. This is half the price of Coins in the final versions of the games. When forced as items, Coins cannot be used by the player, nor can they be stored back into a Coin Case.

This article is about the Game Corner currency in the core games. For the currency in Pokémon Shuffle, see Pokémon Shuffle → Coins. For the coins used in the Pokémon Trading Card Game, see Coin (TCG).

Red's Coin Case, from Generation III

A Coin (Japanese: コイン Coin) is a type of currency used in the core series Pokémon games. Coins are used to play the games available at the various Game Corners around the Pokémon world. They can also be exchanged for prizes, including rare items, TMs, and even Pokémon. Coins cannot be obtained until the player has a Coin Case in his or her Bag.

Coins can be bought in amounts of 50 for $1000 or, starting in Generation II, in increments of 500 for $10000. They can also be found in game machines in the European versions of Platinum.

Dropped Coins can be found on the floor of the Game Corner in certain games and can be collected by the player. In most cases, dozens of Coins are found just by searching the floor. Using the Itemfinder can help with locating these Coins. Several people may give the player free Coins, normally ten or twenty at a time. This is useful if the player wishes to start playing without having to buy any Coins.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

In A Tale of Ninetales, Blue was seen having won a big pile of Coins at the Rocket Game Corner, all of which he exchanged for a Porygon.

In Magnificent Meditite & Really Riolu I, Platinum won over 1000 Coins at the Veilstone Game Corner. Diamond later exchanged the Coins for a Zoom Lens.

Trivia

  • In the Generation I games, Coins are stored as individual items (index number 59, hex: 3B) in the game. It may be of note that when forced into a Poké Mart, they are available for purchase at the price of $10 per Coin. This is half the price of Coins in the final versions of the games. When forced as items, Coins cannot be used by the player, nor can they be stored back into a Coin Case.
