Chimchar (Japanese: ヒコザル Hikozaru) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.
It evolves into Monferno starting at level 14, who evolves into Infernape starting at level 36.
Along with Turtwig and Piplup, it is one of the three starter Pokémon the player can choose at the beginning of Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.
Biology
Physiology
Chimchar are chimpanzee-like Pokémon, primarily a shade of orange, but with light yellow on its face, outer ears, underbelly, hands and feet. The flames on their rears are produced by burning gas in their stomachs. The flames do not go out in the rain, and, unlike the tail flames of Charmander, those of Chimchar go out when they go to sleep. Although difficult to spot (due to Chimchar’s tail flame usually obscuring it), Chimchar has a small, rounded patch of red coloration on its rear. Chimchar’s ears are large in comparison to its head size, and have red ear insides. Chimchar have red markings above and to the sides of their eyes, a swirl-like symbol on its chest and five fingers on its hands with three toes on its feet.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
Chimchar is capable of several Fire-typed moves such as Ember and Flame Wheel. It also knows a few Fighting and Template:Type2 moves such as Brick Break, Vacuum Wave, Nasty Plot, and Taunt. Unlike its fellow Fire-types, Chimchar can learn Grass Knot.
Behavior
Much like their real world counterpart, Chimchar are very inquisitive and are prone to mischief, but can show bravery when push comes to shove. Being very agile, Chimchar are able to climb the rocky ledges of tall mountains, where they live. Despite being based on chimpanzees, Chimchar's cry is actually much more similar to that of a spider monkey.
Habitat
Chimchar are very rare and only make their nests in cliffsides and rocky mountains.

Major appearances
When Paul first appeared, he commanded a Chimchar in When Pokémon Worlds Collide. Paul released it in Glory Blaze, allowing Ash to catch it in Smells Like Team Spirit. It evolved into Monferno in Evolving Strategies! and later into Infernape in Fighting Ire with Fire!.
Other
Chimchar first appeared in Following A Maiden Voyage!. The little fire-monkey was teasing a Piplup after stealing food from it. Piplup then started firing a Bubble attack, but Chimchar kept jumping out of the way. Staraptor was hit in Piplup's line of fire and created a Gust that wrecked everything in Professor Rowan's lab. Chimchar jumped out of a broken window with Piplup chasing after it.
In Dawn of a New Era!, a Trainer at the Pokémon Center had a Chimchar.
Alice from The Rise of Darkrai owns a Chimchar. She uses it to power her hot air balloon with Flamethrower. It later appeared in the end credits of Arceus and the Jewel of Life.
Chimchar is also one of the two main members of Team Poképals of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time & Darkness.
A Chimchar also appeared in Classroom Training!. It was battling a Turtwig at the Trainers' School.

Trophy information
A Chimp Pokémon. With a flaming tail, Chimchar is skilled in Template:Type2 moves. Its light body affords it the ability to scale steep cliffs and live atop rocky mountains. Some say that the fiery tail is fueled by gas made in its stomach. Not even rain can put out the flames, but Chimchar always puts out the fire when asleep. Chimchar evolves into Monferno.

Trivia
- Chimchar is the only starter Pokémon in the Humanshape Egg Group.
- Chimchar, along with Cyndaquil, are the only two starter Pokémon that evolve at level 14, the lowest level starters evolve at. Coincidentally, both are the Fire-type choice in the regions introduced in an even-numbered generation.
- Chimchar's color palette was changed slightly in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, despite it being a non-Johto Pokémon. This also happened to Torterra, Registeel, Stunky, Skuntank, Glameow, Purugly, and Chatot.
- Chimchar is the only unevolved non-legendary Template:Type2 Pokémon to be introduced in Generation IV.
- Chimchar is the only Sinnoh starter Pokémon that does not learn a move that affects both foes in a double battle: Turtwig learns Razor Leaf, while Piplup learns Bubble.
- Chimchar is the only Pokémon to learn Fast Guard through breeding.
- Not only that, it is the only pure Fire-type to learn this move. However, it does evolve into a half Fighting-type.
- Chimchar's Japanese name, Hikozaru, is an anagram of the first name of Hirokazu Tanaka, the composer of many opening and ending themes in anime.
Origin
Chimchar appears to be based on a young chimpanzee. However, the markings on its rear without the flame, (plus facial markings on its evolutions) seem to indicate that it is more a cross between a chimpanzee and a young baboon.
Name origin
Hikozaru's name is derived from 火 hi, or fire, 子 ko, or child, and 猿 saru, or monkey. Zaru is used to describe an ape. Chimchar comes from chimp and char or charcoal, or simply "char," a verb meaning "to burn".
In other languages
- German: Panflam - From Schimpanse (chimpanzee) and Flamme (flame).
- French: Ouisticram - From ouistiti (marmoset) and cramé (burnt).
- Korean: 불꽃숭이 Bulkkotsung'i - From the words 불꽃 Bulkkot (flame) and 원숭이 Wonsung'i (monkey).
- Chinese (Taiwan): 小火焰猴 Xiǎo Huǒ Yàn Hóu - Literally "Small flame monkey".
