Chansey (Japanese: ラッキー Lucky) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

She evolves from Happiny via level up with Oval Stone, and evolves into Blissey via happiness.

Biology

Physiology

Chansey have pink, egg-shaped bodies. They have hair-like outgrowths on the side of their heads. Chansey have stubby limbs and short tails. Chansey have a pouch that hold an egg.

Gender differences

Chansey is a female-only species with no male counterpart.

Special abilities

Chansey, and her evolved form, Blissey, are the only known Pokémon that can naturally learn Softboiled. However, Mew could learn it from a TM in Generation I, while members of the Clefairy and Togepi families can be tutored the move in Generation III.

Behavior

Extremely rare in the wild, Chansey is said to bring happiness to those who are lucky enough to capture it. Chansey lays a new egg every day. The egg is extremely nutritious and tasty. A kind-hearted and charitable Pokémon, Chansey will share its eggs with injured Pokémon it may come across. However it will not share its egg with anyone who has evil in their heart. Chansey walks carefully to protect its egg from damage but can be startlingly fast when it must run from danger.

Habitat

Chansey are rarely seen in the wild. It is a common sight seen working at Pokémon Centres.

Diet

In the anime

Throughout the anime, Chansey is mainly seen working at Pokémon Centers. The first instance was in Pokémon Emergency!. In Overjoyed! a Nurse Joy uses a Chansey to defeat Ash's Corphish in battle.

A Chansey was seen as one of Suzy's clients in Pokémon Fashion Flash.

A Chansey was also seen training with an unnamed trainer in Bad to the Bone.

In Cutting the Ties that Bind, Template:Spenser had his Chansey heal Ash's Sceptile after he saved Ash from Team Rocket.

Cheryl also owns a Chansey, which made an appearance when she did.

In the manga

In Pokémon Special, Chansey is seen as a Pokémon under the ownership of Daisy Oak.

Plum owns a Chansey in Pokémon PiPiPi Adventure.

In the TCG

When released from a Poké Ball, Chansey will use Softboiled and produce five eggs. Anyone can pick them up and they will either slightly heal the holder or contain items.

Chansey is also a Pokéfloat. The float will quickly bob up and down from the bottom of the screen four times.

Trophy information

Renowned for its kind temperament, Chansey has been known to offer injured creatures a highly nutritious egg to aid their recovery. Legend has it that this charitable creature brings happiness to anyone who captures a Chansey. All Chansey are female, and every now and then one is found in possession of a Lucky Egg.

• Pokémon Yellow: Chansey appear in Pokémon Centers.
• Pokémon Stadium 2: Chansey stars in the mini-game "Egg Emergency". Players must catch the falling eggs, but avoid the Voltorb.
• Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2: Chansey runs the Chansey Hut in Treasure Town. This is where the Player can hatch their Eggs recieved as a reward for missions.

Trivia

• Chansey was originally going to use her Japanese name, Lucky, as her English name.
• Chansey has the second-highest base HP of all Pokémon. The highest is Chansey's evolution, Blissey.
  • Both of them however, have the lowest base stat for both Attack and Defense in the games.
• Chansey is one of five Pokémon that initially did not evolve into or from another Pokémon, but now is part of a three-stage evolutionary line (the other four being Electabuzz, Magmar, Porygon and Roselia). Interestingly, while Electabuzz and Magmar gained a pre-evolution in Generation II and an evolution in Generation IV, Chansey did exactly the reverse in both generations.
• Chansey, and her evolution family, Blissey and Happiny, have the most in-game items associated with them. This includes: Lucky Punch, Lucky Egg, Luck Incense, and the Oval Stone.
• Chansey shares the same species name with Exeggcute. They are both known as the Egg Pokémon.
• Golbat and Chansey are the only Pokémon that evolve by happiness that are already evolved. Before Generation IV, Golbat was the only one.
• Chansey and the other members of her evolution family share the same abilities as both forms of Shaymin.
• Its Platinum sprite is strikingly similar to its FireRed and LeafGreen Sugimori artwork.
• It is interesting to note that Chansey and Shedinja both yield 2 HP Effort Points when defeated, but Chansey has the second highest average HP of any Pokémon, having a base stat of 250, while Shedinja has the lowest, having only 1.
• In Generation II and beyond, when breeding was introduced, Chansey hatch from an egg with an egg already in their pouch. The same oddity occurs with Kangaskhan, which hatch with a baby in their pouches, and Happiny, which hatch with a rock in their pouches.

Origin

Her tendency to carry eggs in a pouch is very monotreme- or marsupial-like. She may also just be based on a general concept of females and motherhood.

Name origin

Chansey's name is a corruption of chance; like her Japanese name, Lucky, it seems to refer to Chansey's rarity.
