A cave is an underground area. Caves tend to have Rock- and Ground-type Pokémon, although Pokémon based on cave-dwelling specimens, such as Zubat, may also be found.

Caves can be found in every region of the Pokémon world. They often serve as roadblocks: travelers cannot reach their destination without passing through. Often, these caves are dark and it is impossible to see even a few feet ahead; this problem can be remedied through use of the move Flash. They are almost always winding and maze-like, making it easy to get lost. Additionally, certain caves contain a special magnetic field or an Ice Rock, which allow certain Pokémon to evolve. Villainous teams such as Team Magma and Team Aqua often make their hideouts in isolated caves.

Many mountains in the Pokémon world are filled with sprawling caves, and well-preserved ruins are often located in caves. Additionally, Victory Road is typically a cave filled with expert Pokémon Trainers that serves as the final test for Trainers before facing the Elite Four of a particular region.

In the games, the encounter rate is typically quite high in caves. All caves contain cave tiles, and often water tiles; caves may also contain ice tiles, sand tiles, cracked tiles, holes, ledges, and puddles. Often, rare Pokémon can be found in caves. Items can also be found within the depths of caves, presumably dropped in the darkness by other travelers. Some caves contain Legendary Pokémon at their deepest point. Trainers often use Dusk Balls to catch Pokémon in caves, as they work especially well in such dark places.

In battle

Camouflage makes the user Rock-type when used in a cave.

Cave terrain gives Secret Power a 30% chance of causing the target to flinch. In Generation III, cave terrain gives Secret Power the appearance of Bite, and from Generation IV to Generation VII, it gives it the appearance of Rock Throw.

In Generation III, cave terrain causes Nature Power to become Shadow Ball; in Generation IV and Generation V, it causes it to become Rock Slide; and in Generation VI and Generation VII, it causes it to become Power Gem.

  • Icefall Cave - A cave which is covered by water and ice on Four Island. It seems like the end of the cave is connected to the ocean.
  • Lost Cave - A bewildering cave off the coast of Resort Gorgeous. Some curious thrill seekers have never emerged from it.
  • Altering Cave - A cave on Outcast Island inhabited solely by Zubat. This island cave has been known by this name since the distant past. No one today knows where it got this name, however.

  • Rusturf Tunnel - This stone tunnel links together Rustboro and Verdanturf. Its name was chosen as a mixture of the two.
  • Granite Cave - This cavern is famous for its cave art, which depicts events from thousands of years ago.
  • Meteor Falls - This waterfall is said to have been the site of a meteor shower. An ancient people once made their home here.
  • Fiery Path - An underground route which travels through Mt. Chimney. The Pokémon that live in this area like to use the steam that erupts from the ground as a sort of bath.
  • Desert Underpass - A long tunnel located behind the Fossil Maniac's house on Route 114, containing a fossil at the far end of the cave.
  • Scorched Slab - In Generation III, it is a small empty cave accessed via an indented lake on Route 120. In Generation VI, it is a large cave with four floors and is home to Heatran.
  • Shoal Cave - This cave's appearance changes greatly between high tide and low tide. An Ice Rock is located on the lowest floor of Shoal Cave, accessible only when the tide is low.
  • Cave of Origin - A long-sleeping Pokémon will descend upon this cavern in order to awaken its true powers. It is home to one of the super-ancient Pokémon, Kyogre or Groudon.
  • Seafloor Cavern - It is said that a Pokémon once dwelled here in the ancient mists of a time long past. It is home to one of the super-ancient Pokémon, Groudon or Kyogre.
  • Marine Cave - An elusive underwater cave that is home to Kyogre.
  • Terra Cave - An elusive magma cave filled with steam that is home to Groudon.
  • Victory Road - This challenging path forces Trainers who hope to overcome the Pokémon League to first surpass their own limits.
  • Altering Cave - A cave on the east bank of the inlet that passes through the center of Route 103. It is inhabited solely by Zubat.
  • Artisan Cave - A long cave connecting one end of the Battle Frontier to the other.
  • Mirage Caves - A series of eight caves that mysteriously appear like a mirage in various parts of the region.
  • Nameless Cavern - A cave containing a mysterious, floating ring through which one of the lake guardians will appear. The cave is located on the northeast side of Sootopolis City.
  • Fabled Cave - A cave containing a mysterious, floating ring through which either Reshiram or Zekrom will appear. The cave is located on a large island situated in the bay east of the Seaside Cycling Road on Route 110.
  • Gnarled Den - A cave containing a mysterious, floating ring through which Kyurem will appear. The cave is located on the west side of Mt. Chimney.

  • Stark Mountain - Inside the mountain, fissures in spilled and hardened lava form enormous caverns; the Legendary Pokémon Heatran resides in the innermost chamber.

Unova

  • Wellspring Cave - Wellspring Cave earned its name due to its collection of underground water wells. Rainwater seeped through the soil as groundwater and pooled into wells hidden within the earth, gradually forming springs. Water droplets trickle frequently from stalactites across the cave, indicating its contribution to the formation of the springs.
  • Chargestone Cave - A cave where electrically charged stones float. Galvantula have littered parts of the cave with electric webs. The cave contains a special magnetic field that allows certain Pokémon to evolve.
  • Mistralton Cave - A forgotten cave sealed with hints of a legend's presence. The Guidance Chamber, home of the Legendary Pokémon Cobalion, is located within.
  • Twist Mountain - It has a reputation as a mine littered with valuable ore. An Ice Rock is located in the basement.
  • Victory Road - These forking paths are the last obstacle before the Pokémon League. The new Victory Road is built on the same mountain as the original Victory Road was, due to both paths leading to the same location. While both Victory Roads have extended series of tunnels within the mountain, the new Victory Road is built on a more diverse and straightforward landscape.
    • A portion of the previous Victory Road encompasses the uppermost cavern and the top ledge of the hill outside the Pokémon League. The rest of the original area is blocked off by construction barriers due to an apparent landslide and cave in. The steep slopes of the original Victory Road, now inaccessible, contained within them The Trial Chamber, home of the Legendary Pokémon Terrakion.
  • Challenger's Cave - Trainers seeking further strength used to enter this cavern despite the risks. However, the cave is no longer inaccessible after the entrance collapsed.
  • Reversal Mountain - A mountain where Heatran used to come to cool off. In Pokémon Black 2, it is a volcano that has grabbed many headlines for its series of recent eruptions. The mountain's interior is filled with water. In Pokémon White 2, it is a volcano recorded to have had a huge eruption long ago. The interior is filled with magma.
  • Giant Chasm - A large impact crater containing a maze-like forest. It is home to a number of extraterrestrial Pokémon, including the Legendary Pokémon Kyurem, who resides in the deepest part of the cave at the far end of the crater.
  • Seaside Cave - A rock that became passable due to wind, waves, and Pokémon.
  • Cave of Being - They say the deepest part of the cave leads to the Sinnoh region. The lake guardians have been spotted here.
  • Clay Tunnel - A tunnel created by Clay's constant mining. It leads to Twist Mountain. The Underground Ruins are located within this cave.
  • Relic Passage - A recently discovered passage that leads to the Relic Castle.

Kalos

  • Connecting Cave - This cave linking Route 7 and Cyllage City is notable for its great hordes of Zubat. It is also known as Zubat Roost
  • Glittering Cave - Lose all sense of direction as you wander though this cave, where Luminous Moss glows emerald green.
  • Reflection Cave - The sheer faces of these rock walls reflect the images of people and Pokémon like nature's mirror.
  • Frost Cavern - The drifting snow and impenetrable fog make this cavern a place of fantastical illusions. An Ice Rock is located deep within the cave.
  • Victory Road - This treacherous path to the Pokémon League will break the hearts of even the toughest Trainers.
  • Sea Spirit's Den - A pit in the shallows of Azure Bay thought to have been from an ancient outpouring of energy. Under special circumstances, one of the legendary birds may appear here.
  • Unknown Dungeon - A tiny cave whose entrance is found in the side of a mountain. The cave is barren in terms of terrain aside from the occasional water drop and the few rocks that dot the floor. The Legendary Pokémon Mewtwo awaits the player in the center of the cave.
  • Terminus Cave - A coal mine that was closed a few years ago due to rumors of a monster living deep within it. It is home to the Legendary Pokémon Zygarde.

  • Galar Mine - A cave filled with minecart tracks across the cave and lit with crystals of many colors. Carkol can often be sighted riding across the tracks.
  • Galar Mine No. 2 - A purple cavern with several pools of water inside. It is lit by crystals of many colors.
Crown Tundra
  • Max Lair - The Max Lair's entrance is a small, simple cave with people and scientific equipment. The interiors are filled with labyrinthine caves filled with Dynamax Pokémon. Due to the large amount of Galar particles inside the Max Lair, those who enter aren't allowed to use their own Pokémon, but must choose a rental Pokémon that's resistant to the particles' effects.
  • Tunnel to the Top - A long, winding cave with twists and turns, containing both long tunnels and wide caves.
  • Roaring-Sea Caves - Water-filled caves that connect to the Giant's Foot in the south and the Frigid Sea in the east. An isolated portion is also connected to Three-Point Pass.

  • Oreburrow Tunnel - Located in the east Obsidian Fieldlands is a long, winding tunnel with a large cavity in the center containing ore deposits.
  • Turnback Cave - In the center of a tall mountain crater on the Spring Path within the northwest Cobalt Coastlands is a small, albeit spacious, rounded cavern with stone pillars lining the walls. Giratina is known to appear here.
  • Seaside Hollow - In the north Cobalt Coastlands is a large, circular cavern within a cliff. It is completely barren on the inside, and the rocky walls and ceiling give off a mild blue hue.
  • Mount Coronet - The Coronet Highlands is located on and around Mount Coronet. The mountain itself has a single accessible cave corridor leading to its peak, while a few other caves can be accessed in the surrounding highlands.
  • Stone Portal - This passage leads to the top of Mount Coronet, where the Temple of Sinnoh is located. There is an ancient drawing inside the cave depicting multiple Legendary Pokémon.
  • Wayward Cave - In the south Coronet Highlands is a single-leveled, sprawling maze of tunnels that interconnect and often terminate at dead ends. The pathways are sporadically dotted with torches, ore deposits, and hunks of iron ore. Near the cave's exit to Wayward Wood, the tunnels feed into a large, open space with a small spring.
  • Ancient Quarry - A spacious chamber filled with stone in the south Coronet Highlands contains two squared stone arches leading to large staircases. The interior of the quarry is intricately carved with cube-like chunks of stone, creating pockets within the walls.
  • Primeval Grotto - Within the grotto in the center of the Coronet Highlands is a small cavern located inside of a small cliff. From the southern entrance, a room features a large vein of glowing red Origin Ore embedded within the cavern wall. The next room contains fossils unearthed from the northernmost wall.

Pokémon Island

  • Pokémon Island Cave - A dark cave accessed via the nearby river, home to many nocturnal and Poison-type Pokémon. Towards the back of the cave's third chamber, several large crystals twinkle in the darkness like stars. If photographed, the developed photos show a mysterious and ghostly aurora around the crystals that resembles Mewtwo.

  • Mt. Battle - A large, hollowed out, active volcano.
  • Cave Poké Spot - Located on the side of Mt. Battle, this Poké Spot is a small area in a cavern full of stalagmites and stalactites.
  • Citadark Isle - A volcanic island with a labyrinth of lava-filled rooms and caves.
  • Pyrite Cave - An abandoned coal mine; the bottom floor of the cave is connected to the sewers running underneath Pyrite Town.
  • Relic Cave - A small tunnel underneath Agate Village, leading to the Relic Forest and Relic Stone. It is said that the whole area is blessed with Celebi's power.
  • The Under - A subterranean city situated directly beneath Pyrite Town in southwest Orre. A chasm in the northern part of Pyrite Town allowed sunlight to reach parts of The Under. It was originally an artificial town constructed for the convenience of the miners of Pyrite. The town was ultimately buried after Cipher was disbanded, to prevent future villains from hiding out there.

  • Friend Areas
    • Boulder Cave - A cave surrounded by craggy boulders. Pokémon that are capable of digging through even sheets of rock live here.
    • Cryptic Cave - This very mysterious spot, said to be deep inside a dungeon, is the perfect place to store energy without expending any effort.
    • Dragon Cave - Cracks between boulders are the only windows to the outside in this cavern. The Pokémon here dream of flying.
    • Echo Cave - Pokémon enjoy the echoey quality of this small limestone cavern. Many Pokémon that use ultrasonic waves live here.
    • Seafloor Cave - It is said that a mythological Pokémon, spoken of through the ages, lives inside this unexplored cavern. It is the preferred Friend Area of Kyogre.

  • Chroma Ruins - Curious ruins from long ago, located in the northwest of the Chroma Highlands. No one knows when the original site was built or who undertook the monumental task. Legends speak of a precious treasure resting deep inside.
  • Crysta Cave - A cave located between Hia Valley and a river on Union Road.
  • Marine Cave - A cave that can only be accessed when the tide is low.
  • Volcano Cave - The prime tourist destination on the island of Boyleland. Its cave is filled with pool and rivers of roiling magma.

  • Cavern Zone - an abandoned mine and currently home to many Rock-type, Steel-type, and other cave-dwelling Pokémon. The leader of this zone is Blaziken.

  • Dim Cave - A dark cave sometimes used as a test of courage. Look closely, and you'll find many Pokémon.
  • Scary Cave - A pitch-black cave that seems haunted. It's said that many Pokémon live deep inside.
  • Quiet Cave - A quiet, deep, and empty cave. If you look carefully, you'll find some rare Pokémon.
