Casey (Japanese: ナナコ Nanako) is a nominally recurring Trainer in the Pokémon anime.

History

Casey first appeared in The Double Trouble Header, where Ash, Misty and Brock see her capturing a Rattata. Soon after her appearance, Casey battles against an overconfident Ash that just uses his Charizard to defeat her easily.

After her defeat, Casey is tricked by Team Rocket and faces Ash again, this time battling his Pikachu using her Chikorita. She battles well, but the battle is interrupted by Jessie, James, and Meowth, who try to capture Chikorita and Pikachu.

At the end Ash and Casey unite to defeat Team Rocket and become friends.

She appears in a flashback in The Chikorita Rescue.

She returns in The Bug Stops Here, where Ash competes against her in the Bug-Catching Contest. She decides to win at all costs with her Chikorita, which almost causes Ash's defeat. Chikorita evolves to defeat Team Rocket more than once. Before leaving, Ash presents her with a Beedrill because of her admiration for yellow and black Pokémon.

Casey catching a Pokémon

Casey returns in Here's Lookin 'at You, Elekid!, where she reveals that her Bayleef evolved into a Meganium. She also tries to catch a wild Elekid and with hard work she manages to capture it, the pre-evolution of her favorite Pokémon, Electabuzz.

In A Date With Delcatty, she visits the Kanto region to try to watch a baseball game with team Starmie against the team Electabuzz. She meets up with Misty and both unite to defeat Butch and Cassidy which trying to steal a rare Pokémon belonging to Georgio, Delcatty.

Her latest appearance was in Those Darn Electabuzz! where she helps her idol Corey Demario regain his confidence and his Charizard, Don (Jp: ドン Don), regain his abilities to battle and fly.

Character

Casey's team

She and her family are fans of the Electabuzz baseball team, and she loves Pokémon with the team's colors, yellow with black stripes. She started with a Chikorita, which she received from Professor Elm of New Bark Town.

In the original Japanese version, Casey speaks with a Kansai dialect, in which natives to Osaka, Japan speak. Adding to this is Casey's love of the Electabuzz baseball team, an analogue to the real world Osaka baseball team, the Hanshin Tigers. Not only is there a similarity in both Electabuzz and tigers being striped animals, but the Hanshin Tigers are known for having a very loyal fanbase.

Casey has been compared to Ash in his early days of Pokémon training. However, they have different styles of training, and different tastes in Pokémon.

Main article: Casey's Meganium

Meganium is Casey's first and primary Pokémon. She obtained it as a Chikorita from Professor Elm's lab. It first appeared in The Double Trouble Header. It evolved into Bayleef in The Bug Stops Here, and again into Meganium by Here's Lookin' at You, Elekid!.

Casey's Pidgey
Pidgey
Casey's Pidgey was seen for the first time in Casey's battle with Ash in The Double Trouble Header, her debut appearance. It was easily defeated by Ash's Charizard. It was also later used to battle against Team Rocket.

It is likely that Pidgey, like Rattata, was chosen as a reflection of Casey being a beginning Trainer at the time. While Meganium, Beedrill, and Elekid are often seen out of their Poké Balls, Pidgey has not been heard of since Casey's debut episode.

Pidgey's only known move is Quick Attack.

Casey's Rattata
Rattata
Casey's Rattata was seen for the first time during Casey's debut appearance in The Double Trouble Header as a wild Pokémon. She battled it with her Chikorita and then caught it. Rattata was soon called out during Casey's battle against Ash, where it was quickly defeated by his Charizard. It was also later used to battle against Team Rocket. It reappeared in a flashback in The Chikorita Rescue.

It is likely that Rattata, like Pidgey, was chosen as a reflection of Casey being a beginning Trainer at the time. While Meganium, Beedrill, and Elekid are often seen out of their Poké Balls, Rattata has not been heard of since Casey's debut episode.

Rattata's only known move is Tackle.

Beedrill was initially caught by Ash in the Bug-Catching Contest in The Bug Stops Here. Ash gave it to Casey afterwards because of her love for yellow and black-striped Pokémon.

Casey's Elekid
Elekid
Elekid first appeared as a wild Pokémon where it interrupted a picnic that Ash and his friends were having. Casey came by and noticed the Elekid after defeating Team Rocket the second time in the episode. As Elekid is the pre-evolution of her favorite mascot of the baseball team, Casey challenged it to a battle with her Meganium. Even though it put up a great fight, it was no match for Meganium's strength. As a result, Casey was able to catch Elekid. Since Elekid was caught, Larvitar felt sad as it wasn't able to see its friend. Casey promised to take care of her newly captured Pokémon and friend. Elekid appeared next to Casey and Meganium when Casey said goodbye to Ash and his friends singing the song of the Electabuzz team.

Elekid maded a cameo in Address Unown! where it was shown in Larvitar's memories. It also appeared in A Date With Delcatty where it battled Georgio's Delcatty and lost, and in Those Darn Electabuzz where it helped Casey and her other Pokémon to try to resolve a phobia of Fire-type Pokémon.

Elekid's known moves are Thunderbolt and ThunderPunch.
