Cascoon (Japanese: マユルド Mayuld) is a Bug-type Pokémon.

It evolves from Wurmple depending on its personality value, starting at level 7, and it evolves into Dustox starting at level 10.

Biology

Physiology

Cascoon is very similar to Silcoon in design, being a cocoon-like Pokémon with two red eyes and limbs to attach itself to tree branches. However, it has a slightly darker, more purple coloration.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Cascoon has a tough cocoon, built to repel attacks taken from enemies. It can endure all attacks until evolution, where it can seek revenge.

Behavior

It remains motionless while hanging from a tree inside its cocoon. It does not stir even if it is attacked, in which case Cascoon hardens. If it were to flinch in the slightest way, it would have insufficient strength upon evolution. However, once it evolves, it is hostile towards those who attacked it. To avoid detection by its enemies, it hides motionlessly beneath large leaves and in the gaps of branches. It also attaches dead leaves to its body for camouflage. It is hot inside its cocoon, and all the cells in Cascoon's body create the energy for it to evolve. When cracks appear, evolution is near.

Habitat

Cascoon prefer to hide and can be hard to find. They prefer to live in dark forests.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Cascoon has been found on Honey trees. It is unknown if it is eating the honey or if it evolved on the tree while it was eating it as a Wurmple.

Major appearances

Jessie's Cascoon

Jessie's Wurmple evolved into Cascoon in A Corphish out of Water. However, Jessie thought it was a Silcoon. As a result, James and Meowth were worried that Jessie would be furious when Cascoon evolved into Dustox.

Ruby Cascoon makes its protective cocoon by wrapping its body entirely with a fine silk from its mouth. Once the silk goes around its body, it hardens. This Pokémon prepares for its evolution inside the cocoon.
Sapphire If it is attacked, Cascoon remains motionless however badly it may be hurt. It does so because if it were to move, its body would be weak upon evolution. This Pokémon will also not forget the pain it endured.
Emerald To avoid detection by its enemies, it hides motionlessly beneath large leaves and in the gaps of branches. It also attaches dead leaves to its body for camouflage.
FireRed Its body, which is made of soft silk, hardens over time. When cracks appear, evolution is near.

Trivia

  • Cascoon shares the same species name with Metapod, Kakuna, and Silcoon. They are all known as Cocoon Pokémon.
    • Cascoon is tied with them as the weakest evolved Pokémon in the games, by average base stats.
  • Cascoon and Silcoon have the exact same base stats.
  • Cascoon, along with Silcoon, can be seen without the limb protrusions on the body in the anime and occasionally in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
    • However, James's cards containing info about Pokémon showed that Silcoon and Cascoon have those limbs.
  • Cascoon is the only Bug-type cocoon-based Pokémon whose Defense stat does not decrease upon evolution.

Origin

Cascoon is based on the chrysalis or cocoon stage of a butterfly or moth.

Name origin

Cascoon may be a combination of cask (a container, often cylindrical) and cocoon. It could also derive from cast, a shell meant for immobilizing part of the body or the method of creating said shell.

Mayuld is a combination of 繭 mayu (cocoon) and shield.
