Carnivine (Japanese: マスキッパ Muskippa) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Biology

Physiology

Carnivine and its mouth opened wide

Its appearance is based on a Venus Flytrap, with circular eyes and small pupils. Instead of having legs like other Grass Pokémon (like Bellsprout), it has red and green vines attached to the end of its yellow and green-spotted stem, giving the vines the appearance of tentacles. The leaves act as arms, and appear to have three leafy ‘fingers’. It's mouth can open to about 180 degrees wide.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Carnivine has the ability to hover above the ground.

Behavior

Hanging from branches using its tentacles, Carnivine is said to look like a plant. With its mouth wide open, it attracts the prey it waits for with a sweet-smelling saliva, then chomps down. It takes a whole day to eat prey.

Habitat

Carnivine inhabits forests, and marshes.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Carnivine have a diet consisting mostly of insects and small bugs.

In the anime

James has a Carnivine that first appeared in Two Degrees of Separation!, an old childhood friend of his which he finds at his old family mansion in Sinnoh. It has replaced his Cacnea as his main battling Pokémon.

Name Origin

Carnivine's name is a combination of the word carnivore and vine. Muskippa is derived from Dionaea muscipula, the scientific name for the venus flytrap, and 立派 rippa, meaning "elegant" or "stately".

In other languages

  • German: Venuflibis - From Venusfliegenfalle (Venus fly trap) and Biss (bite).
  • French: Vortente - From carnivore (carnivorous) and possibly tente (tent).
  • Korean: 무스틈니 Musteumni
  • Chinese (Taiwan): 尖牙籠 Jiān Yá Lóng - Literally "Sharp-teethed cage". 尖牙 also refers to the canine teeth.
