The Bug-Catching contest data copy glitch is a glitch found in the Japanese versions of Gold and Silver. Whilst similar to the cloning glitches, the glitch does not make a perfect copy of any Pokémon; rather, it copies the data structure of one Pokémon, including factors such as the name, experience, level and DVs of the Pokémon but with one half of the species bytes with another Pokémon. This method can be used to 'make' Shiny Pokémon, as the glitch Pokémon created will be shiny if the last Pokémon in the party was shiny.
The glitch does not appear in the international releases of Gold and Silver, or in Crystal.
Method
Before attempting to carry out the glitch, the player must have six Pokémon in the party; one of which must be able to use Fly.
Steps
- Step 1 - The player must put the Pokémon that knows Fly first in the party, the Pokémon whose species is to be copied in second, and the Pokémon whose data is to copied in last position.
- Step 2 - The player must put all of the Pokémon in the party but the first two in the PC; going in order from the third Pokémon to the last.
- Step 3 - The player must enter the Bug-Catching Contest on a Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday. Once in the contest, the player must proceed to the front or side exit.
- Step 4 - When asked if (s)he wishes to end the contest, the player must reply with "NO"; then use Fly to leave National Park.
- Step 5 - The player must then deposit the second Pokémon in the party in the PC, then return to National Park.
- Step 6 - The player must then return to the guard at the front or side entrance, and this time quit the contest. If the player had walked through the front entrance, they will walk down through the carpet and outside of the map.
- Step 7 - After the results of the contest are announced, the player will receive a copy of the last Pokémon with the species of the second Pokémon.
- Step 8 - The player can withdraw the original Pokémon that was second in the party in Step 1 from the Pokémon storage system.
Effect
Performing the glitch will cause a new Pokémon to appear in the party that is of the same species as the Pokémon that was in second place whilst performing the glitch. The rest of the data for the new Pokémon, however, will be copied from the Pokémon which was last in the party; including its name, gender, type(s), battle sprite, moves (not affecting learnset), stats and IVs.
If the Pokémon evolves, it will have the correct name, battle sprite and stats for its species, however if the player deposits the Pokémon in the Day Care Center, it will revert to the original species prior to the glitch.
Since IVs are copied from the Pokémon that was last in the party to the new Pokémon data, it will be shiny if the Pokémon that was last in the party was shiny.
