It evolves from Pawniard starting at level 52.

Biology

Physiology

Bisharp has a round red and black head resembling a helmet, topped with a gold, double headed axe blade. Its face is shrouded by its "helmet" and is black and yellow. Its red, gold tipped shoulders resemble shoulder pads and its connecting torso and arms are colored black. Its hands are glove-like and metallic in appearance and have blade-like appendages attached to them. On its torso are two blades, resembling a ribcage. Its thighs are circular and red colored and progressively get thinner as they connect to the feet. The feet are long and split apart down the middle. Both feet are metallic and blade-like, the split down the middle somewhat resembles ungulate hooves, and is also very similar to steel war boots.

Trivia

  • No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Bisharp and its pre-evolution.
    • The types it has are also the two types that were introduced in Generation II.
    • This makes Bisharp and its pre-evolution the only Pokémon to have a double resistance to Ghost.
  • Komatana and Bisharp cannot learn any special moves by leveling up or breeding.
  • Bisharp shares several similarities with Gallade. Both have warrior-esque designs (that prominently feature arm-blades and helmets), both have the same height (5'03"), and both share the species name of "Blade Pokémon".
    • Bisharp is also the only Pokémon introduced in the fifth generation that can learn Psycho Cut.
  • Pawniard and Bisharp are the only Pokemon that can have Defiant as a non-hidden abillity.

Origin

It looks similar to a knight and may be based on Arthurian legends of black knights. It may also have gained origin from the Kaijin style of Japanese monster movies, involving a humanoid creature that acts as a villain. There is also a resemblance to the Super Sentai and Kamen Rider series' suited heroes.

Name origin

Bisharp is a combination of bishop, keeping with the chess theme in its evolutionary line, and sharp, describing its metal blades. Fittingly enough, if a pawn reaches the end of the opponent's side of the board, the player can choose to "promote" it to either a rook, knight, bishop, or queen, similar to how Pawniard evolves into Bisharp.

Kirikizan is probably derived from 切り刻む kirikizamu, to mince, and 斬 zan, to cut or slay.
