Artwork of Red on his Bicycle from Generation I

A Bicycle (Japanese: じてんしゃ Bicycle) is a key item obtained in the games to facilitate faster movement. Cycling Roads can only be navigated on while cycling. They are usually obtained from Bicycle Shops.

In the games

Types of Bicycles

In most games there is only one type of Bicycle; however, in Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire, there are two types of Bicycle: the Acro Bike and the Mach Bike. The player can only have one at a time and must trade in their current Bicycle at Rydel's Cycles to obtain the other.

All Bicycles cannot be ridden inside of buildings or if the player is accompanied by a person. In Pokémon Yellow and Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the walking Pokémon returns to its Poké Ball while the player is cycling. Prior to Generation V, bikes cannot be ridden in snow. In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, bikes cannot be ridden in gates.

Regular Bicycle

In all games but Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire there is only one type of Bicycle.

In Generations I and III, Miracle Cycle is selling Bicycles for $1,000,000, which is $1 more than it is possible for the player to obtain in these games. Instead, the player must use a Bike Voucher to buy one.

In Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, the player can press the B Button to switch between the third and fourth gears. Fourth gear is faster than third gear and allows the player to ride up muddy slopes and jump further from bike ramps. Third gear can jump bike ramps, but does not jump as far.

In Pokémon X and Y, the player can choose between a green or a yellow bicycle, the choice having no impact on the bike itself.

Acro Bike

Artwork of the Acro Bike from Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire

An Acro Bike (Japanese: ダートじてんしゃ Dirt Bike) travels at the same speed as regular Bicycles, but it also allows players to perform tricks, such as wheelies and bunny hops, which let players reach special areas. It can also be used for traveling on white rails found on Route 119 and in the Hoenn Safari Zone.

Bunny hopping up and down on an Acro Bike in tall grass can cause wild Pokémon to appear, but does not count as steps towards the Safari Game or Repel.

Unlike the Mach Bike, if the player rides on Seaside Cycling Road their time won't be recorded due to the Bicycle being "easy to turn" in comparison.

Tricks
  • Hold B Button (less than 2 seconds): standing wheelie
  • Hold B Button (more than 2 seconds): bunny hop
  • Hold B, then +Control Pad: moving wheelie or bunny hop
  • Press B and +Control Pad direction (perpendicular to direction of travel) simultaneously: sideways hop
  • Press B and +Control Pad direction (opposite to direction of travel) simultaneously: hops and reverses direction

Mach Bike

The Mach Bike (Japanese: マッハじてんしゃ Mach Bike) allows players to move a lot faster than regular Bicycles and the Acro Bike. It can move fast enough to ride straight up muddy slopes, or over cracked tiles without falling through (which appear in Granite Cave, the Sky Pillar, and Mirage TowerE) if the player has enough momentum. If the player collides with something, all momentum gained is lost and the speed resets.

On the Seaside Cycling Road, a player's time and number of collisions while riding this Bicycle from the northern entrance to the southern exit are timed and recorded. This is part of the data sent over to other players via record mixing.

Bicycles are rarely seen in the anime as Ash and his friends are usually seen walking. The only time bicycles are used are when it is necessary to use them, such as on Cycling Roads, or for a faster way to get somewhere.

The first bicycle to appear was Misty's bicycle in Pokémon - I Choose You!. It was "borrowed" by Ash in order to escape from a flock of Spearow. The bike was then unintentionally destroyed when Ash's Pikachu released a Thunder Shock at the Spearow. Misty later re-obtains her bike from Nurse Joy in Viridian City in Gotta Catch Ya Later.

The act of Pikachu destroying a female companion's bike became a running gag in the two following series of the anime: May's bicycle was destroyed in Get the Show on the Road! and Dawn's in Two Degrees of Separation. Iris and Serena did not own bikes at all.

Bicycles can be rented for use on Cycling Roads, as seen in The Bridge Bike Gang and One Big Happiny Family!. Some characters do own bicycles, but are rarely seen using them. For example, Professor Oak used a bicycle in The Power Of One to get to Delia Ketchum's house.

In The Bridge Bike Gang, Chopper's bike bears a resemblance to Zapdos.

In Pokémon Origins

Red's bicycle in Pokémon Origins

Red commonly used a bicycle to move around in the Pokémon Origins mini-series. He was seen obtaining it at the beginning of the episode File 2 - Cubone, getting it in return for a Bike Voucher he had obtained from the Pokémon Fan Club Chairman.

In the manga

A Bicycle in Pokémon Zensho

In The Electric Tale of Pikachu manga

In Play Misty For Me of The Electric Tale of Pikachu, it was revealed that Misty's Bicycle was custom built and worth $10,000.

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

Professor Oak uses a bicycle to catch the escaped Pokémon in Bulbasaur Come Home!. Red participates in a cycling competition along Routes 11 and 12 in Wake Up — You're Snorlax.

Gold competes with Whitney in a bike race from Goldenrod City to the National Park in Smeargle Smudge and How Do You Do, Sudowoodo?. Gold, however, altered his Bicycle into a push scooter.

Diamond, Pearl and Platinum received Bicycles from Rad Rickshaw as a sign of gratitude after his rescue from Team Galactic in Ring Around the Roserade II. The trio would later use their new Bicycles to travel through the Cycling Road.

In the Pokémon Zensho manga

A Bicycle was seen inside the Miracle Cycle shop in Cerulean City.

In the TCG

Main article: Bicycle (Plasma Storm 117)

The Bicycle was introduced as an Item card in the Pokémon Trading Card Game during the English Black & White Series (the Japanese BW Era). First released in the Cold Flare expansion, the Bicycle later debuted in the Plasma Storm expansion with both prints featuring an illustration by Toyste Beach. With the same effect as Mail from Bill from the Neo Destiny expansion, this Trainer card allows the player to draw cards until they have 4 cards in their hand.
