Berries were introduced in Generation II to take advantage of the then-new held items feature, which allows a Pokémon to hold and use specific items in battle. As Generation I items that have become standard, such as Potions and Full Heals, are man-made, a system of ten Berries, each with a different effect, was created. While these Berries no longer exist, having been replaced by the new system in Generation III, their effects are similar to, and in many cases exactly the same as, the first ten Berries introduced in Hoenn.
