Beauty is one of five Contest conditions that can be raised in all Pokémon through use of Pokéblocks and Poffin. Unlike the other four conditions, Beauty can also be raised in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver when a Pokémon is groomed by Daisy Oak or one of the Haircut brothers, without any rise in sheen.

Most Pokémon that can effectively compete in a Beauty Contest or Super Contest have a nature that raises their Special Attack - Modest, Mild, Quiet, or Rash, as Pokémon with these natures prefer dry flavors. Typically, Fire-, Ice-, and Template:Type2 moves become Beauty moves, though at least one move of each type is a Beauty move. In Beauty Contests and Super Contests, Cute and Cool moves will go over well, though not as well as Beauty moves, while Smart and Tough moves will do poorly.

A Feebas's Beauty, when raised to its maximum, will cause it to evolve into Milotic when it is next leveled up.
