Biology
Biology
Bayleef resembles a pale yellow sauropod dinosaur or a lizard. A large leaf shaped like a scythe protrudes from its head. Curled leaf-like growths, stated to be buds with small tree shoots inside, sprout in a ring around its neck. It has red eyes, a short, blunt snout, and a short, pointed tail. There is one large toenail on each of its four feet.
Bayleef is a quadrupedal, pale-yellow reptile Pokémon that resembles a sauropoda dinosaur. It has a long neck, red eyes, a short, rounded snout, and a stubby tail. Each foot has a single, light gray nail. Sprouting from its forehead is a green leaf that curves back over its head and around its neck are a series of tightly curled leaves. Inside the leaves are small tree shoots.

The aroma wafting from the leaf-like growths around its neck has a spicy scent, and exhibits various beneficial effects on itself, nearby people, or Pokémon who inhale it. The fragrance has a combination of energizing, stimulating, and healing effects. Bayleef can be rarely found in List of Pokémon by habitat.

As mentioned in Sleep, any Pokémon sleeping near Bayleaf will feel invigorated.

Evolution
Bayleef evolves from Chikorita and evolves into Meganium.
Major appearances
Ash's Bayleef
Ash's Chikorita evolved into Bayleef in Current Events. Ash's Bayleef still had the same personality it had when it was still a Chikorita, but it soon mellowed out.

Casey's Bayleef
(For specifics on this Pokémon's evolution in the games, refer to Game data→Evolution data.)
Casey's Chikorita evolved into Bayleef in The Bug Stops Here. It evolved again into a Meganium off screen prior to the events of Here's Lookin' At You, Elekid!.

In Lively Larvitar of Pokémon Adventures, Crystal's Chikorita, nicknamed Megaree, evolves into a Bayleef while defending his Trainer against an attack from an old foe, an impish wild Larvitar. Although he had been such a short while since he had evolved that it didn't know how to restrain the Sweet Scent he gave around him (causing wild Lickitung to gather around him), he evolved with his fellow (and newly reawakened) starter Pokémon in the fight against Lugia in the Whirl Islands.

Gold's Bayleef
In Pokémon Gold & Silver: The Golden Boys, Gold has a Bayleef that used to belong to Black, but was released by its former Trainer for being too weak. After joining Gold's team, it has been able to defeat strong opponents such as Bugsy's Scyther.

Bayleef (Japanese: ベイリーフ Bayleaf) is a Grass-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

It evolves from Chikorita starting at level 16 and evolves into Meganium starting at level 32.

Biology

Bayleef is a quadrupedal, pale-yellow reptilian Pokémon that resembles a sauropod dinosaur. It has a long neck, red eyes, a short, rounded snout, and a stubby tail. Each foot has a single, light gray nail. Sprouting from its forehead is a green leaf that curves back over its head and around its neck are a series of tightly curled leaves. Inside the leaves are small tree shoots.

The aroma wafting from the leaves around its neck has a spicy scent and has various beneficial effects on those who inhale it. The fragrance has a combination of energizing, stimulating, and healing effects. Bayleef can be rarely found in grasslands. As mentioned in Pokémon Sleep, any Pokémon sleeping near Bayleaf will feel invigorated.[1]

Evolution

Bayleef evolves from Chikorita and evolves into Meganium.

Other

Horace's Chikorita was revealed to have evolved into a Bayleef in Battling in the Freezing Raid!. It was used in a Raid Battle against an Articuno, only to be defeated.

Minor appearances

A Bayleef appeared in a fantasy in The Right Place and the Right Mime.

A Trainer's Bayleef appeared in Regaining the Home Advantage!.

Four Bayleef appeared in The Power of Us, with two under the ownership of two different Trainers (including an unnamed recurring woman), the third being wild, and the fourth appearing during a flashback.

Trivia

 • Bayleef and its evolutionary relatives are the only evolutionary line of a first partner Pokémon to keep their Japanese voices in the English dub of the anime, due to having nearly identical names in English and Japanese.
 • Bayleef's "necklace" is consistently described as having a spicy aroma, while real bay leaves have a bitter and herbal taste, which is similar to thyme.

Origin

Bayleef appears to be based on sauropods, specifically the Apatosaurus. Its vegetable part may be based on the leaves of the bay laurel, whose oil is used for healing and as a stimulant in aromatherapy.

Name origin

Bayleef and Bayleaf derive from bay leaf, an herb.
