Inside the Battleground.

The Battleground (Japanese: しょうぶどころ Match Place) is a building owned by Buck that is located in the Survival Area of the Battle Zone, and only available in Pokémon Platinum. After the Stark Mountain subquest with Team Galactic, players can battle Gym Leaders and tag battle partners from earlier in the game. Up to four of these Trainers appear each day and they can be battled only once a day. Resetting before entering the Battleground would change the trainers who are inside. According to the old man behind the cash register, only Gym Leaders and those vouched by them are allowed here.

Rival

Rival outside the Battleground

Even though the rival is not one of the Trainers that appear in the Battleground, he does appear just outside it and will battle the player every weekend (both Saturday and Sunday). His Pokémon get stronger as the game progresses, with his starter Pokémon eventually reaching level 85, the strongest trainer of any Pokémon game. He wants to get inside, but he is not allowed. At Stark Mountain, he asks Crasher Wake to help him enter, but Wake refuses.

Trivia

  • Many fans have come to know this place as the Top Trainer Café, one reason being that Serebii.net has called it so.
  • During the time Gym Leaders appear here, they can still be found in their respective gyms. This is probably due to the Battleground not being part of the main storyline; the game randomly determines which four characters can be challenged on any particular day.
  • All of the Gym Leaders, except Gardenia, Maylene and Volkner, have replaced their signature Pokémon (their highest-leveled Pokémon, which also holds a Sitrus).
  • Candice is the only Trainer to use all Generation IV Pokémon.
  • All the trainers in the Battleground have Pokémon between levels 61 and 65, while Maylene's Pokémon are between levels 62 and 66. The reason for this is unknown.
  • Maylene is the only trainer at the battleground to offer more prize money. When the player defeats the other Gym Leaders they receive 7,800, however beating Maylene earns the player 7,920
  • Maylene is also the only trainer in the battleground, who's Party differs from the format of 2 Level 61s, 1 Level 62, 1 Level 63 and 1 Level 65, instead her team consists of 2 Level 62s, 1 Level 63, 1 Level 64 and 1 Level 65.
