Ash's Pokabu (Japanese: サトシのポカブ Satoshi's Pokabu) is the third Pokémon that Ash caught in the Isshu region.

History

Pokabu being abandoned

Pokabu once belonged to another trainer, to which was abandoned after he lost to a Shikijika in battle. When Ash visited the Pokémon Battle Club in BW004, Ash mistook Pokabu for an Umbreon when watching a security tape of him stealing food from the nearby warehouse. In an attempt to capture the 'Umbreon', Ash then met Pokabu for the first time when it was trying to eat some bait. He realized that Pokabu was covered in soot and was unable to eat as there was a rope tied around his mouth, making him extremely hungry. Initially, Pokabu tried to run away, but after being cornered by Ash and having its rope removed, he was carried back to the Battle Club by Ash.

Later on, Pokabu volunteered to help Ash retrieve his Pikachu from Team Rocket. Subsequently, when Pokabu had to decide between Ash and Iris as a trainer, he chose Ash, and Ash caught him in a Poké Ball.

Pokabu fought for Ash during his Sanyou Gym battle in BW005, against Pod and his Baoppu. Pokabu's attacks didn't do much damage to Baoppu, but Baoppu managed to hit Pokabu with Fire Punch, Flamethrower and Dig. One of Baoppu's Dig attack sent Pokabu into the air. Ash then commanded him to dive into the hole that Baoppu was in and he managed to bite Baoppu's tail. Although Baoppu threw Pokabu onto the ground, he managed to get up and spun Baoppu around, throwing him to the ground. He used Ember successfully, and then knocked Baoppu out with a powerful Tackle.

Pokabu was revealed to be male in BW007 when he battled a wild Tsutarja that would eventually be caught by Ash. Although he managed to use an Ember attack, he was hit by the Tsutarja's Attract and became infatuated with her, causing him to be recalled.

In BW010, it was used to fight against Shooti's Hatoopoo. Like Mijumaru before him, he was defeated by a single Aerial Ace.

Trivia

  • Pokabu's capture was first revealed in a short preview aired after DP190, featuring all the Isshu starters. However, it was not revealed who would be catching him.
  • Pokabu is the third Template:Type2 starter Pokémon caught by Ash to have been abandoned by his previous Trainer. The other two are Charmander and Chimchar, fourth if Cyndaquil is counted, as it was almost captured by a potentially abusive Trainer.
    • It is also the only Fire-type starter that Ash caught whose Japanese name does not begin with a hi.
  • Like all of Ash's Fire-type Pokémon, Pokabu was caught without battling.
  • Ash's Pokabu is his first Fire-type Pokémon to have its gender confirmed in the original Japanese version.
