Ash's Torkoal (Japanese: サトシのコータス Satoshi's Cotoise) was the fourth Pokémon caught by Ash during his travels through Hoenn, after Taillow, Treecko, and Corphish. Its voice actor in Japanese is 三木眞一郎 Shin'ichirō Miki, and its English voice actors are Maddie Blaustein (4Kids Entertainment dub) and Billy Beach (Pokémon USA/TAJ Productions dub).
Ash caught Torkoal in the episode All Torkoal, No Play!. Ash and his friends were traveling through the Valley of Steel when they saw a lone Torkoal being attacked by a Skarmory and Magneton. After Ash saved it, Torkoal burst into tears and ran away. Later, Ash helped it defeat the Steelix who ruled over the valley and it decided to join him.
Torkoal has a rather strange personality, and it is very emotional. Seemingly without reason, it will burst into tears. In Once in a Mawile!, Brock was comforting Ash's Corphish after its advances had been shirked by Mawile in favor of Brock's Lombre, and when Brock and Corphish burst into tears due to their empathetic situations, Torkoal followed suit, crying a torrent of tears that matched the other two. Torkoal is very nice and pretty much gets along with everyone. As of the latest Japanese episode, it has only been used in one Gym battle, against Norman and his Slakoth. However, it has had many battles against other trainers and has been quite successful, such as when it defeated a Scizor. Torkoal also seemed to have a friendship with the Spoink that had appeared to Ash's group on occasion, giving it assistance.
After the Hoenn League Championships, Ash left Torkoal at Professor Oak's Lab. It did not appear until Ash's second battle against Brandon, the Frontier Brain of the Battle Pyramid, where it returned for a battle against Brandon's Registeel. Unfortunately, Ash was once again defeated by Brandon.

- This is Ash's second turtle-based Pokémon, the others being Squirtle and Turtwig.
- This is Ash's only Template:Type2 Pokémon that is not a starter Pokémon.
- Torkoal is the only one of Ash's Fire-type Pokémon not to be owned or attempted to be captured by another trainer. But, like the other Fire-type Pokémon, Torkoal was saved by Ash.
- Torkoal was the 30th Pokémon species Ash ever owned, counting Haunter, Larvitar, and Raticate.
