Archen (Japanese: アーケン Archen) is a dual-type Rock/Flying Fossil Pokémon.

It is resurrected from a Plume Fossil and evolves into Archeops starting at level 37.

Biology

Physiology

Archen is a small, bipedal creature with mixed reptilian and avian traits. Its large, red head is covered in discernible scales, and its neck has blue and red feathers. Its body is covered in untidy, sallow feathers, with blue, clawed wings that cannot be used for flight. It has short, thin legs, and a thin, twig-like tail that bears a diamond-shaped blue feather. It has wide white eyes with black pupils and no irises.

It is believed to be the ancestor of all bird Pokémon.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Behavior

Archen cannot fly yet, but it has an arboreal lifestyle, hopping between branches. Like their evolved form, they are likely carnivorous predators, hunting prey as they move about the forest.

Habitat

Archen are believed to be extinct in the wild, and so they have no habitat in current times.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

In the anime, it was shown Archen don't like Pokémon food, but can grow a special plant with their cries, whose Berries they like to eat.

Major appearances

Minor appearances

Multiple Archen appeared in a flashback in A Restoration Confrontation! Part 1 and A Restoration Confrontation! Part 2.

Trivia

  • No other Pokémon has the same Egg Group combination as Archen and its evolution.
  • Despite Archen and its evolution being in the Water 3 Egg Group, they are not based on aquatic organisms.
  • Archen is the only Pokémon that has a base stat total of 401.

Origin

Archen appears to draw inspiration from Archaeopteryx. However, since its Pokédex entry states that it is unable to fly, it also seems to be based on small, flightless feathered dinosaurs such as Caudipteryx or Velociraptor.

Name origin

Archen is derived from Archaeopteryx.
